This book-Familie Allwein: Volume III: Western Migrations-is volume three of a series of books about the history of the Allwein family in America, a family descended from an eighteenth-century German immigrant Johannes (Hans) Jacob Allwein and his wife, Catharina. Familie Allwein: Volume III: Western Migrations builds upon earlier volumes of Familie Allwein, which dealt with the Allwein family's emigration from Germany to America and their settlement in colonial Pennsylvania. The first volume, Familie Allwein-An Early History, set the stage for later volumes. The second volume, Familie Allwein-Journeys in Time and Place, covered Allwein descendants living east of the Allegheny Mountains over the seventy-year period from about 1870 through 1940. Part 1 of Journeys in Time and Place focuses on those families that settled in southeastern Pennsylvania, particularly in Lebanon, Philadelphia, and the Berks Counties. Part 2 of Journeys in Time and Place focuses on those families living in Dauphin, Lancaster, Adams, York, and Blair Counties in south central Pennsylvania. This third volume of Familie Allwein-Western Migrations-covers families who moved to western Pennsylvania and those who migrated farther west. Not only is the present volume an update on the families covered in earlier volumes of Familie Allwein but it also extends the coverage of Allwein families by tracing their paths west-not only to the western counties of Pennsylvania but also to Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Iowa, Minnesota, Kansas, Nebraska, and places farther west, including California. As in earlier volumes of this series, the author's careful documentation of all sources and attention to detail make it possible to reproduce his findings and re-examine his conclusions.

Jacques Lacan and American Sociology

Jacques Lacan and American Sociology

Duane Rousselle

In this Palgrave Pivot, Duane Rousselle aims to disrupt the hold that pragmatist ideology has had over American sociology by demonstrating that the social bond has always been founded upon a fundamental and primordial bankruptcy. Using the Lacanian theory of “capitalist discourse,” Rousselle demonstrates that most of early American sociology suffered from an inadequate account of the “symbolic” within the mental and social lives of the individual subject. The psychoanalytic aspect of the social bond remained theoretically undeveloped in the American context. Instead it is the “image,” a product of the imaginary, which takes charge over any symbolic function. This intervention into pragmatic sociology seeks to recover the tradition of “grand theory” by bringing psychoanalytical and sociological discourse into fruitful communication with one another.
Contract Options for Buyers and Sellers of Talent in Professional Sports

Contract Options for Buyers and Sellers of Talent in Professional Sports

This Palgrave Pivot re-examines salary formation in Major League Baseball in light of real option theory to clarify the connection between salary and marginal revenue product for professional baseball players. Current literature has tended to treat single-year and multi-year contracts similarly, ignoring the potential option value for teams and for players. Recent work points to the observation that both high-productivity and low-productivity athletes have salaries that systematically differ from their marginal revenue product, and that free agents signing multi-year contracts are overpaid relative to free agents signing one-year contracts. This book argues that the value of signing an athlete to a contract should be determined similarly to the determination of the value of an investment project or a financial asset. This book demonstrates how to calculate the value of real options to the player and the team owner with a simple two-year contract, and offers extensions to the realoptions model for multiyear contracts or when a player is early or late in his career.

This third edition introduces the exciting world of how human movement is created and how it can be enhanced. The book presents a comprehensive review of the major concepts of biomechanics and summarizes them in nine principles of biomechanics. Throughout the text are numerous examples of applying these principles to the work of kinesiology professionals with references to current biomechanics research. Specific case studies illustrate how biomechanics principles can be used in evidence-based practice by professionals to modify movement in teaching/coaching and exercise/rehabilitation settings. This text presents a clear, conceptual understanding of biomechanics and is designed to help students through active learning lab activities to link their personal experience to biomechanical concepts. Biomechanics instructors, researchers, and other professionals helping people to improve movement and decrease the risk of injury, as well as advanced students learning biomechanical principles in biomedical engineering, ergonomics, kinesiology, physics, and sports physiology will find Fundamentals in Biomechanics, 3rd edition invaluable.Key Features: Detailed examples of biomechanical principles and their application in the qualitative diagnosis of human movement in a variety of professions Over 160 figures illustrating real human movement Case studies of actual movement technique examined by professionals in human movement Extensive use of graphs, photographs, illustrations, and citations to important biomechanics literature Glossary of key terms and biomechanics research terminology Appendix of instructional lab activitiesEndorsements of the 2nd Edition:: "Fundamentals in Biomechanics delivers everything it promises, and more. The challenge of teaching and learning biomechanics is understanding the two distinct fields that it comprises - biology and mechanics. In my experience, some students enter biomechanics with aptitude and interest in one of these fields and reluctance to the others. As a leader in biomechanics, Dr. Knudson seems to realize this and does an expert job of teaching these two fields in separate parts of the textbook. The text is clearly written, and includes many helpful illustrations and examples." Glenn S. Fleisig, Ph.D., Smith and Nephew Chair of Research, American Sports Medicine Institute, Birmingham, AL "Fundamentals of Biomechanics is a wonderful and comprehensive treatment which meets the needs and interest of both students and educators! The text addresses the subject cohesively and solidly in a technical, yet very readable and effective manner...I'll use this text in my own summer course and recommend it to colleagues." Ethnic Stratification and Structural Pluralism in Guyana

Ethnic Stratification and Structural Pluralism in Guyana

Duane Edwards

Through a case study of Guyana, a society in which structural pluralism and ethnic/racial divisions coincide to a large extent, this book explores the specific way in which social structures interact with and affect social institutions, ethnic stratification, social actions, and both group-based and purportedly universalist ideologies. The book examines how a system of differentiation and stratification, inherited from colonial times, persists in its essential form in the current time despite attempts to dislodge it. While not falling prey to a structural determinism, the book argues, based on the evidence provided through both a historical sociological review of historical evidence and a presentist analysis of cross-sectional data on business ownership, that actions which coincide with the logic of social structures tend to prevail over actions which take that logic for granted. It is for this reason that political and social players with grand ideals have been less successful in their attempts to bridge the social and economic divides in the country, than those players whose interests coincided with the structural divides.

Heidegger and the Death of God

This book presents a reading of Martin Heidegger’s philosophy as an effort to strike a middle position between the philosophies of Plato and Friedrich Nietzsche. Duane Armitage interprets the history of Western philosophy as comprising a struggle over the meaning of “being,” and argues that this struggle is ultimately between materialism and idealism, and, in the end, between atheism and theism. This work therefore concerns the question of the meaning of the so called “death of God” in the context of contemporary Continental Philosophy.
