How did the rise of consumer society impact the domestic lives of ordinary workers? Funded by English Heritage, this study offers the first book-length archaeology of a 17th through 20th century household site in Great Britain. Adopting a multi-disciplinary approach, the volume situates the results of traditional archaeological excavations within a broader spectrum of archival sources, family photographs and personal memories of former site residents to consider the dramatic influences of industrialization and subsequent de-industrialisation on the material world of a rural community in the North-West of England. Organised as a series of thematic chapters, the book emphasizes the social nature of household archaeology, drawing the reader from excavated artifacts into domestic spaces, historic events, community identities, and family memories. It will be of interest to a wide range of scholars and students, in addition to those interested in local history, archaeology, and family genealogies.

Demonising Disney is nothing new. Disney films have long been synonymous with a certain conservative, patriarchal, heterosexual ideology, occupying a centre-stage position at the heart of the evil empire. Deconstructing Disney takes issue with knee-jerk polarities, overturning classical oppositions and recognising that, just as the Disney 'text' has changed, so too must the terms of critical engagement. This book is a sharply focused deconstruction of the political culture - and the cultural politics - of the Disney canon in the years since the emergence of the so-called New World Order. Eleanor Byrne and Martin McQuillan offer a critical encounter with Disney which alternates between readings of individual texts and wider thematic concerns such as race, gender and sexuality, the broader context of American contemporary culture, and the global ambitions and insularity of the last great superpower. The movies discussed include The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, Pocohontas, Snow White, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Dumbo, Peter Pan, The Jungle Book, Hercules and Mulan.

'Inspiring […] A powerful call to action for all who believe we can create a more democratic and ecological society' - Debbie Bookchin, journalist, author, daughter of Murray Bookchin How can we unlock society’s potential to shift the course of the climate crisis? So many of us feel helpless in the face of corporate-fuelled environmental destruction. However, Practicing Social Ecology shows that there is an amazing well of untapped power in our communities—we just need to know how to use it. Drawing from her experience of working in democratic ecology movements from the revolution in Rojava to Barcelona’s municipalist movement, Finley shows how to develop assemblies, confederations, study groups, and permaculture projects. Looking to history, she maps out how social ecologists, such as Murray Bookchin, have led inspirational struggles around climate and energy, agriculture and biotechnology, globalization, and economic inequality. This guide is perfect for anyone curious about how to challenge unending capitalist growth through the democratic power of social ecology.

Eleanor Stewart had always had a difficult relationship with her mother, but when her mother's persistent ill-health, caused by Parkinson's Disease, meant she needed a new home, Eleanor offered her one. 'It will only be for six months' she assured her husband - but it wasn't. It was for ten years. And, initially, those years were hard. Her mother, Mary, had very little interest in Eleanor's life, or even in her two grandchildren. So if a bridge was to be built between the two women, Eleanor would have to build it - and find the necessary solid ground to do so. She found it by exploring her mother's past with her. Mary had had a fascinating life, which included being shelled during the Second World War, shipwrecked and a passionate affair while sailing to India. As Mary Stewart reveals more and more of her past, Eleanor discovers a woman she has never really known, and the two forge a strong relationship that was not possible before.

To many people a thimble may seem to be simply a mundane and commonplace object with unromantic shape and associations, even if the work with which it assists can frequently be exquisite and imaginative. This book will open a door to the charm of the humble thimble in all its variety, from the simple workaday type to the rarer and more exquisite examples that gave scope for artists and craftsmen, and indeed still do. It will give those new to a fascinating collecting field an introduction to the possibilities that exist, including the parallel subject of thimble cases. The more interesting old thimbles are less plentiful than they once were but are still worth searching for in antique shops and antique fairs, while those currently being made and on sale in good gift shops can make a worthy addition to any comprehensive collection.
Edward Thomas

Eleanor Farjeon, first met Edward Thomas in 1912, when her brother invited him to tea. It was the beginning of a deep friendship between the shy 31-year-old woman and the reserved writer. Though he died at the Battle of Arras in 1917, it was a friendship which for Eleanor did not end with his death, but lived beyond in his letters and poems. This double memoir uses Edward's letters and Eleanor's diaries and linking commentary to provide a candid account of their developing friendship. Edward was often deeply depressed but Eleanor also shows another side to his character, capturing moments of joy and humour. She offers a unique account of Thomas' development as a poet, including the momentous meeting with American poet Robert Frost whose encouragement led to Thomas' first poems. Thomas describes for her his family, his friendships with other writers, including D.H. Lawrence, and provides a detailed account of his First World War experiences. First published in 1948, this is an acclaimed classic. This edition, published for the 90th anniversary of Thomas' death, includes an introduction by Anne Harvey, a selection of Eleanor's sonnets, and "Walking Tom", the little-known poem about Edward by Clifford Bax and Herbert Farjeon.
