Evaluating Criminology and Criminal Justice

Evaluating Criminology and Criminal Justice

Praeger Publishers Inc
1998

Using citation analysis, this study examines the influence and prestige of scholars, journals, and university departments in the fields of criminology and criminal justice. In the tradition of Marvin E. Wolfgang's Evaluating Criminology, the authors apply this quantitative method to evaluate the impact of individuals and their research efforts on two fields and to identify interconnections among scholars and their publications. This examination of the most-cited scholars, works, and topics in major American and international journals from 1986 to 1990 and from 1991 to 1995 provides valuable and unbiased feedback for researchers and practitioners. The nine chapters of this book detail a wide range of findings in both criminology and criminal justice. After an introduction to the methodology, chapters two, three, and four divide recent scholarship into two periods, 1986 to 1990 and 1991 to 1995, in order to consider the most-cited scholars, works, and topics. Chapter five provides a longitudinal analysis of scholars in the discipline since 1945. Chapters six and seven provide a system of prestige-ratings for relevant journals as well as page coverage analysis of the most influential scholars. The continuing controversy over whether the two fields are converging or diverging is the subject of chapter eight, and the work concludes with a prescription for further research.
Emma Lou Diemer

Emma Lou Diemer

Ellen G. Grolman

Greenwood Press

sidottu
Emma Lou Diemer--a composer who successfully combines a classicist's interest in form with a fresh, contemporary, harmonic vocabulary--has produced a diverse, sophisticated, and largely unheralded opus, including 350 works composed for orchestra, symphonic band, chamber ensemble, keyboard, chorus, voices, and solo and electronic instruments. This complete guide to her extensive work examines her influences and her unique musical style, reveals her philosophy of composing, and offers the reader access to detailed information about her work. Though her organ psalm settings and hymn preludes are considered standard repertoire, as are a number of her choral compositions, Diemer has not received her due attention or acclaim-an oversight fully corrected by this valuable addition to music scholarship. Beginning with a brief biography that outlines Diemer's life and art, this thoroughly cross-referenced book goes on to enumerate the composer's many works and performances in a section divided by style and instrument. A complete discography and bibliography round out the volume, along with alphabetical, chronological, and genre-specific indexes.

The "funny, wise, and wonderful" (USA Today) book of short stories that won the National Book Award and established Ellen Gilchrist as a leading writer of the American South. In her second collection, Ellen Gilchrist creates an unforgettable group of Southern women, enchanted and enchanting, who cavort through life, in and out of bars, marriages, and divorces, through the world of art and culture, drug busts, lovers' arms, and even earthquakes, in an attempt to find, if not happiness, at least some satisfaction. Throughout these stories, one hears echoes of Flannery O'Connor and Eudora Welty, but Ms. Gilchrist has her own unique literary voice -- and it is outrageously funny, moving, tragic, and always appealing. "Ellen Gilchrist is terrific." --Norman Mailer"This book is a delight." --Cleveland Plain Dealer

Doing What Scientists Do: Children Learn to Investigate Their World
"This is a splendid, down-to-earth book-especially for elementary teachers who want to do science but are unsure how to go about it. The intensity of children's interest is unmistakable. And Ellen's low-key style reassures the reader that children in any classroom can do work that is just as fine." Eleanor Duckworth, Harvard University "I want to embolden teachers who are uncertain about teaching science, and encourage others to give children's observations a central place in the curriculum." Ellen Doris When it first published, Ellen Doris' now-classic text rapidly became an indispensable resource for teachers who were searching for new ways to introduce students to science. This second edition will be every bit as essential for teachers and science leaders. Novice teachers and those looking to refresh their practice will find support to help children explore, experiment, and figure things out. Ellen deftly translates the theory of inquiry-based science instruction into methods teachers can use. She answers questions and offers advice on these central elements: how to begin how to inspire children's curiosity and facilitate their investigations how to assess children's understanding through their drawing, discussion, and writing how to structure classroom spaces, supervise fieldwork, and help children learn from one another how to keep children's priorities as well as science standards in mind. Lively classroom examples enrich Ellen's discussion. Her latest thinking will guide teachers and science leaders as they create contexts in which children can inquire, investigate, and collaborate.

On February 16,1944, Anne Frank recorded in her diary that Peter, whom she at first disliked but eventually came to love, had confided to her that if he got out alive, he would reinvent himself entirely. This is the story of what might have happened if the boy in hiding survived to become a man. Peter arrives in America, the land of self-creation; he flourishes in business, marries, and raises a family. He thrives in the present, plans for the future, and has no past. But when The Diary of a Young Girl is published to worldwide acclaim and gives rise to bitter infighting, he realises the cost of forgetting. Based on extensive research of Peter van Pels and the strange and disturbing life Anne Frank's diary took on after her death, this is a novel about the memory of death, the death of memory, and the inescapability of the past. ‘This is a brave novel in the strongest sense of the word, carefully treading mined terrain to thought-provoking and memorable effect’ Observer ‘In this thoughtful novel, Feldman imagines how Peter's life might have turned out had he survived the war. It's an account of his struggle to deal with the past in the face of public obsession with the girl he loved.
