English Word-Formation

English Word-Formation

Laurie Bauer

Cambridge University Press
1983
pokkari
There is little agreement on methodology in the study of word-formation or theoretical approaches to it; even the kind of data relevant to its study is open to debate. This text provides a perspective on what is a confused and often controversial field of study.

English Literature in our Time and the University

English Literature in our Time and the University

F. R. Leavis

Cambridge University Press
1979
pokkari
This book was first published by Cambridge in 1979. It is taken from the 1967 Clark Lectures and is in the first place a vigourous defence of the study of English in a modern university. Leavis is concerned with English Literature as a living reality, with the need for 'keeping alive, potent and developing the full human consciousness of ends and values and human nature that comes to us out of the long creative continuity of our culture'. Responsibility for maintaining this continuity, Leavis argues, can only be borne by a university with a strong humane centre - and English school, defined as a collaborative community of students and teachers. Leavis's concern, however, extends further than the question of university education, for he sees the university simply as one nucleus of a wider spiritual community that should form the mind and conscience of the country. This book will remain of interest to readers today.
English Seigniorial Agriculture, 1250–1450

English Seigniorial Agriculture, 1250–1450

Bruce M. S. Campbell

Cambridge University Press
2000
sidottu
Bruce Campbell's book, first published in 2000, was the first single-authored treatment of medieval English agriculture at a national scale. It deals comprehensively with the cultivation carried out by or for lords on their demesne farms, for which the documentation is more detailed and abundant than for any other agricultural group either during the medieval period or later. A context is thereby assured for all future work on the medieval and early modern agrarian economies. The book also makes a substantive contribution to ongoing historical debates about the dimensions, chronology and causes of the medieval cycle of expansion, crisis and contraction. Topics dealt with include the scale and composition of seigniorial estates, the geography of land-use, pastoral husbandry, arable husbandry, land productivity, levels of commercialization and the size of the population in relation to the consumption of food at any given time.
English Medieval Narrative in the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Centuries
This is a wide-ranging and detailed study of English narrative verse in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Piero Boitani describes and analyses the undisputed masterpieces of narrative (such as the works of the Gawain poet, Langland, Gower and Chaucer), as well as the anonymous romances and specimens of religious and comic narrative which form the background to the better-known poems. The book is divided by literary genres or structural systems: chapters on the religious, comic and romance traditions are followed by a discussion of dream and visionary narratives and a chapter on story collections including those of Gower. The rest of the book is devoted to Chaucer, who mastered all these types.
English Grammar

English Grammar

Rodney Huddleston

Cambridge University Press
1988
pokkari
A thorough and precise account of all the major areas of English grammar. For practical reasons Rodney Huddleston concentrates on Standard English and only selected aspects of its regional variation. The book is written for students who may have no previous knowledge of linguistics and little familiarity with 'traditional' grammar. All grammatical terms, whether traditional or more recent, are therefore carefully explained, and in the first three chapters the student is introduced to the theoretical concepts and methodological principles needed to follow the later descriptive chapters.
English Science: Bacon to Newton

English Science: Bacon to Newton

Cambridge University Press
1987
pokkari
Seventeenth-century England witnessed an unprecedented flourishing of natural philosophy, inspired by Francis Bacon's call for a new science based on observation and experiment, to be carried out in collective research projects, whose findings would be communicated in clear language. This anthology documents the effect of Bacon's ideas in the remarkably fruitful period following 1660. It includes his sketch of a scientific research institute in the New Atlantis (1627), which inspired the founding of the Royal Society in 1662, as acknowledged by Thomas Sprat in its History, excerpted here. Bacon's plea for an appropriate language for science also affected the Royal Society, as Sprat records, and gave birth to a number of schemes for man-made artificial languages, represented here by John Wilkins's Essay Towards a Real Character and a Philosophical Language (1668). The selections are accompanied by a general introduction, extensive notes, contemporary illustrations, a glossary of obsolete and technical terms and an updated bibliography.

English for Specific Purposes offers the teacher a new perspective on this important field. The main concern of the book is effective learning and how this can best be achieved in ESP courses. The book will be of interest to all teachers who are concerned with ESP. Those who are new to the field will find it a thorough, practical introduction while those with more extensive experience will find its approach both stimulating and innovative.
English Mystics of the Middle Ages

English Mystics of the Middle Ages

Cambridge University Press
1994
sidottu
This edition brings together for the first time key texts representing the writings of the medieval English mystics. The texts are newly edited from early manuscripts, and are supplemented with textual and explanatory notes and a glossary. The book focuses on five major authors, Richard Rolle, Walter Hilton, the anonymous author of The Cloud of Unknowing, Dame Julian of Norwich, and Margery Kempe. Shorter works are presented whole, where possible, and accompanied by extracts from the mystics’ longer works; extracts from contemporary translations into English are also included to illustrate the reception of European mystical texts in later medieval England. Overall, this volume makes accessible some of the finest writing by English contemplatives and visionaries of the Middle Ages.
English Metrical Psalms

English Metrical Psalms

Rivkah Zim

Cambridge University Press
1987
sidottu
During the sixteenth century the Book of Psalms was considered to be a uniquely authoritative and universally applicable collection of religious poems. Whereas the Bible in general taught what God said to man, the Psalms, it was felt, taught man how to speak to God. From the 1530s people of many different religious and intellectual persuasions discovered that the poetry of the Psalms lent itself to memorable English translation, and a substantial and varied range of imitations of the Psalms began to appear. Dr Zim's 1987 book was the first full-scale study of this important genre to be published in the twentieth century. In challenging a number of critical orthodoxies and illuminating the expressive qualities of these poems, Dr Zim has produced a major contribution to our understanding of Tudor literary culture.

pokkari
This is an introduction to the phonology of present-day English. It deals principally with three varieties of English: ‘General American’, Southern British ‘Received Pronunciation’ and ‘Scottish Standard English’. It offers a systematic and detailed discussion of the features shared by these major accents, and explains some major differences. Other varieties of English - Australian and New Zealand English, South African English and Hiberno-English - are also discussed briefly. Without focusing on current phonological theory and its evolution, the author demonstrates the importance of ‘theory’, in whatever shape or form, in phonological argumentation. The book also includes a helpful introductory section on speech sounds and their production, and detailed suggestions for further reading follow each chapter. This clear and helpful textbook will be welcomed by all students of English language and linguistics.
