Der letzte Gegenpapst Felix V. (1440-1449) war vor seiner Wahl zum Papst durch das Basler Konzil Amadeus VIII., Herzog von Savoyen. Diese Vergangenheit als erfolgreicher Landesfurst pragte seinen Pontifikat. Das Buch beschaftigt sich mit zentralen Momenten des Pontifikats wie Wahl, Kronung und Rucktritt. Die Autorin zieht historiographische und urkundliche Quellen heran und untersucht zudem materielle Zeugnisse, die in Inventaren und Rechnungen verzeichnet sind. Aus der Analyse der Reprasentation und Herrschaftspraxis wird eine zentrale Legitimations-Strategie Felix' V. deutlich: Es fand eine vielschichtige Verschmelzung der papstlichen Reprasentation mit derjenigen des savoyischen Herzogshauses statt. Auf diese Weise entstand als Hybrid eigener Art ein herzoglicher Papst und vice versa ein papstlicher Herzog.
