"To refuse all pleasures against reason out of dislike for them is to be dour like a boor." -- St. Thomas Aquinas Integrating our emotions is one of life's most difficult challenges. Although feelings are natural and a gift from God, certain life experiences--and our inward reactions to them--can sometimes generate disordered responses. Fr. Wojciech Giertych, O.P., the theologian to the Papal Household, equips you to develop a healthy functioning of your emotions through a deeper encounter with God. Through the advice of St. Thomas Aquinas and other great spiritual masters, as well as leading Christian psychologists, Fr. Giertych names and explains the reality of emotions to help form young adults to grow in virtue and develop mature identities, free of painful anxieties. God wants us to be healed and freed from emotional entanglements, to be true carriers of His love. Wholeness is possible, and these life-giving pages provide solutions to help you use the evils of this life to springboard ever deeper and more frequently into the arms of God Himself. As Fr. Giertych examines Christian spirituality, morality, and psychology, you will discover: The secret to ordering your senses when emotions run amok Hope for individuals with fragile emotions to find the fullness of joy How to integrate sexual feelings and assertive feelings in every vocation Ways of dealing with emotional swings The neuroses that may develop from repressed emotions Why it is crucial to remain childlike before God Even though we all have some bodily, psychological, or intellectual inhibitions and limitations, we can, in spite of them, accept, live, and share the gift of God's grace with serenity. By entrusting ourselves to the Heart of Christ through faith, we allow the fire of His divine life to be ignited in us. "Holiness . . . is an encounter between your weakness and the power of God's grace."-- Pope Francis

The eighteenth century is called an age of "Enlightenment", which is to say a skeptical, godless and libertine age where men turned from God to labor upon founding the city of man. God, however, had long prepared His apostle for this age, St. Alphonsus Liguori. St. Alphonsus turned his back on the law courts, worldly privilege, and put Christ at the center of his heart. Alphonsus aimed at bringing the love of the holy redeemer to all men, and set them afire with divine love. Yet, God prepared the saint for his mission through a woman, Blessed Mary Celeste Crostarosa, who gave the character and inspiration to the Congregation of the Holy Redeemer. Having entered as a Carmelite, she transferred to another community where God revealed to her the rule of the Most Holy Redeemer, which became the foundation of St. Alphonsus' institute. As the biography unfolds, the reader will not only discover the closeness between her and St. Alphonsus, St. Gerard and other early Redemptorists, but her deep contemplative and mystical life. Blessed Mary Celeste abounded in miracles, and in trials, living her life under the shadow of the cross. She suffered persecution and setbacks, but always, again and again, lowered her head in prayer. "The contemplative and mystic life of Sister Mary Celeste is a true drama. At each step the supernatural direction of Providence is manifest. God chose to use her as His chief instrument in revealing to St. Alphonsus his life's work-the foundation of the Congregation of the Holy Redeemer. -The American Ecclesiastical Review

At War in Prayer

The practice of continuous prayer has been known in the Christian church as early as the second century AD, well before the beginning of Christian monasticism. One of the ways early Christians practiced continuous prayer was through the repetition of short bible verses throughout the day. While this mode of prayer did not have any specific name until the twentieth century, its practice has always been characterized by the imagery of warfare and, more specifically, the use of arrows. It was probably this that gave rise to its name, the Arrow Prayer, on account of its brevity and its use to attack evil thoughts. However, most research on continuous prayer only focuses on the Jesus Prayer, and presumes that the Arrow Prayer and other prayer practices are extensions of it. In this book, Fr Anthony St Shenouda scrutinizes this conclusion by examining the sources that attest to any practice of continuous prayer, and the cultural backdrop that gave rise to these practices. Ultimately, he argues that the tradition of the Arrow Prayer is much older than the Jesus Prayer, and that it is the parent tradition out of which the Jesus Prayer arose.
