Why the Wealthy Give

Why the Wealthy Give

Francie Ostrower

Princeton University Press
1997
pokkari
Through a series of candid personal interviews with nearly one hundred donors, Why the Wealthy Give offers an in-depth look at the world of elite philanthropy. Francie Ostrower focuses on the New York City area, with its high concentration of affluent donors, to explore both the motivations of individual donors and the significance of philanthropy for the culture and organization of elite groups. In so doing, she offers an account of why the wealthy give that also provides insight into the nature of elite culture, status, identity, and cohesion. Emphasizing the diversity of philanthropy, the book also shows how and why different types of donors support different causes. It further demonstrates how, in the face of considerable change, elite philanthropy has adapted and therefore endured. A timely discussion explores the ways in which elite donors view the respective roles of government and philanthropy. Why the Wealthy Give shows that elite philanthropy involves far more than writing a check. The wealthy take philanthropy and adapt it into an entire way of life that serves as a vehicle for the social and cultural life of their class. This is reflected in the widespread popularity of educational and cultural causes among donors. At the same time, Ostrower finds divergent patterns of giving that reflect alternative sources of donor identity, such as religion, ethnicity, and gender, and explains why certain kinds of donors are more or less likely to diverge from the prestige hierarchy of their class in their philanthropy.

The Gender Question in Globalization

The Gender Question in Globalization

Francien van Driel

Orthodox views of globalization assume that it has the same features and impact everywhere, i.e. the feminization of poverty, labour and even peace. As these ideas circulate in official documents and scientific writings, they settle practically as truths. This challenging and unique book is amongst the first to deconstruct these orthodoxies, using a multi-layered gender analysis where globalization is not treated as a linear and top-down process with a known outcome and a pre-conceived definition of gender. Instead, the authors scrutinize the dynamics of each context on its own merits, including the agency of women and men, resulting in unexpected and groundbreaking insights into the variety of differences apparent, even in sometimes seemingly similar global processes. Through this gender lens, different and new meanings of gender appear, rooted in multiple modernities. The book will be a seminal contribution to debates in the fields of international labour, sexuality, identity, feminism, peace studies and migration.

This workbook and its companion volumes are the outcome of a participatory research and development project, which involved urban and rural women caring for elderly people at home. Based on the experiences of these carers, four workshops covering the essentials of care for the elderly were designed, tested, revised, and are published here. This workbook, in English, is designed specifically for professional and non-professional carers in training. It contains complete workshop designs covering four priorities: the ageing process; mobility; nutrition; and how to prevent bed sores. Included are charts, games and role plays, as well as case studies and notes for the trainers. Companion volumes, in Sotho, Tswana, Xhosa and Zulu, are also available. They are intended for use by workshop participants to reinforce their learning. They cover the same ground as the English workbook, but without the workshop design. These materials are non-prescriptive and flexible, and can be adapted to suit the needs of different groups.
