Consumed Nostalgia

Consumed Nostalgia

Gary Cross

Nostalgia isn't what it used to be. For many of us, modern memory is shaped less by a longing for the social customs and practices of the past or for family heirlooms handed down over generations and more by childhood encounters with ephemeral commercial goods and fleeting media moments in our age of fast capitalism. This phenomenon has given rise to communities of nostalgia whose members remain loyal to the toys, television, and music of their youth. They return to the theme parks and pastimes of their upbringing, hoping to reclaim that feeling of childhood wonder or teenage freedom. Consumed nostalgia took definite shape in the 1970s, spurred by an increase in the turnover of consumer goods, the commercialization of childhood, and the skillful marketing of nostalgia. Gary Cross immerses readers in this fascinating and often delightful history, unpacking the cultural dynamics that turn pop tunes into oldies and childhood toys into valuable commodities. He compares the limited appeal of heritage sites such as Colonial Williamsburg to the perpetually attractive power of a Disney theme park and reveals how consumed nostalgia shapes how we cope with accelerating change. Today nostalgia can be owned, collected, and easily accessed, making it less elusive and often more fun than in the past, but its commercialization has sometimes limited memory and complicated the positive goals of recollection. By unmasking the fascinating, idiosyncratic character of modern nostalgia, Cross helps us better understand the rituals of recall in an age of fast capitalism.

Why Veganism Matters

Why Veganism Matters

Most people care about animals, but only a tiny fraction are vegan. The rest often think of veganism as an extreme position. They certainly do not believe that they have a moral obligation to become vegan.Gary L. Francione—the leading and most provocative scholar of animal rights theory and law—demonstrates that veganism is a moral imperative and a matter of justice. He shows that there is a contradiction in thinking that animals matter morally if one is also not vegan, and he explains why this belief should logically lead all who hold it to veganism. Francione dismantles the conventional wisdom that it is acceptable to use and kill animals as long as we do so “humanely.” He argues that if animals matter morally, they must have the right not to be used as property. That means that we cannot eat them, wear them, use them, or otherwise treat them as resources or commodities. Why Veganism Matters presents the case for the personhood of nonhuman animals and for veganism in a clear and accessible way that does not require any philosophical or legal background. This book offers a persuasive and powerful argument for all readers who care about animals but are not sure whether they have a moral obligation to be vegan.

Drawing on his work with elite athletes, the world's first sports psychotherapist on what to do when life throws you a curveball'Cracking tales, a great read' Nigel Owens MBE, rugby union referee'Absolutely fascinating . . . a genuine must-read for anyone interested in the human side of sport' Peter Drury, football commentatorElite athletes play out their lives in the most public of arenas. Everything they do is analysed in real time and then picked apart in the pub and in the press afterwards. 'Why did they miss that penalty?', 'What made them fall at the first jump?', 'That press conference was a bit weird.' We can all speculate, but what's really going on? In Keeping Your Head in the Game we peer into this highly confidential world. We follow the journeys of ten athletes in their therapy sessions with sports psychotherapist Gary Bloom, from a rugby player arrested for a drunken brawl, through a homesick cricketer on tour, to a snooker player struggling with his feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem.Structured around the emotions we all experience on a daily basis - shame, anger, fear, jealousy and envy, love - chapter by chapter, the book reveals, explains and attempts to resolve the inner traumas that have an impact on the performance of these sports personalities. Seeing how they overcome their demons is a powerful way of tackling our own and, as Gary says, happier players play better - in sport and in life.'For anyone interested in competitive sport, what people have to do to get to the top and what that can do to the human psyche' Catherine Jackson, journalist and former editor of Therapy Today 'It's amazing how clubs invest in repairing the bodies of their players whilst largely ignoring their minds. Elite athletes are just as fragile as the rest of us. Happily change is on the way and this must-read book will only accelerate that' Jon Champion, football commentator

Time spent with Shteyngart is like being with Woody Allen on speed: razor-sharp, funny and deeply moving' Mail on Sunday'A marvel of a story. His finest book yet' Zadie Smith'An immigrant story, a coming-of-age story, a becoming-a-writer story. Dazzling' Meg WolitzerGary Shteyngart was born in Leningrad in 1972. A rich life I have had, yes. Full of experience and learning of all things physical. But my real journey of discovery started but a few years ago. When the spiritual awakening commenced for me. Captured are some 167 writing's in this first volume, given to me as I begun to walk anew in my Life. Topics are wide and varied, but most are reflective, causing the reader to stop and ponder about themselves. For the path of self-discovery, both physical and spiritual can only be walked or begun for you, by you. Written in a way to hopefully cause you to take stock of yourself, your surroundings and who you are in them. Written to broaden your view of the world. To allow you to take notice of those things that should be important to us all. They are captured in the order they came to me, as I walk this path called My Life. Let the Art speak to you. May it enrich your Life, this Art of the Right. Ars enim non salvificem mundum
