Michael Aldrian, a retired Viennese opera prompter, travels to Venice to visit his brother and sister-in-law for the holidays, but they seem to have disappeared without a trace. Intending to write a travel guide to Venice, Aldrian heads out into the flooded city. But he is subsequently followed, threatened, and attacked. He then receives a package of Italian lira, presumably as a bribe. The police advise him to return to Vienna, but he stays, hoping to solve the mysterious disappearance of the couple. Has he gone crazy, or is it the world?Author Gerhard Roth was born in Graz in 1942, the son of a medical doctor and a nurse. He originally intended to study medicine, but soon discontinued his studies. For ten years Roth worked as a computer programmer to support his growing family, but since the mid-1970s he has been exclusively a writer. His major works consist of a cycle of seven novels, Die Archive des Schweigens (The Archives of Silence), and another novel cycle, Orkus (Hades). His work has earned extensive critical acclaim over the years, including the D blin Prize (1983), the Kreisky Prize (2002), and the Grand Austrian State Prize (2016), among many others.

The theory of partial differential equations of mathematical physics has been one of the most important fields of study in applied mathematics. This is essentially due to the frequent occurrence of partial differential equations in many branches of natural sciences and engineering. The present lecture notes have been written for the purpose of presenting an approach based mainly on the mathematical problems and their related solutions. The primary concern, therefore, is not with the general theory, but to provide students with the fundamental concepts, the underlying principles, and the techniques and methods of solution of partial differential equations of mathematical physics. One of the authors main goals is to present a fairly elementary and complete introduction to this subject which is suitable for the "first reading" and accessible for students of different specialities. The material in these lecture notes has been developed and extended from a set of lectures given at Saratov State University and reflects partially the research interests of the authors. It is intended for graduate and advanced undergraduate students in applied mathematics, computer sciences, physics, engineering, and other specialities. The prerequisites for its study are a standard basic course in mathematical analysis or advanced calculus, including elementary ordinary differential equations. Although various differential equations and problems considered in these lecture notes are physically motivated, a knowledge of the physics involved is not necessary for understanding the mathematical aspects of the solution of these problems.

This book is an introduction to some of the most important properties of electromagnetic waves and their interaction with passive materials and scatterers. The main purpose of the book is to give a theoretical treatment of these scattering phenomena, and to illustrate numerical computations of some canonical scattering problems for different geometries and materials. The scattering theory is also important in the theory of passive antennas, and this book gives several examples on this topic.
