A musty old photo album, a faded picture of a cheeky young man, a snatch of song, an enticing whiff of the past...Oscar Temple has never had much time for History, until History itself reaches out and grabs him. Then he finds himself on an adventure in time, hurtling back to the theatrical world of 1913. When Oscar comes face to face with his mystery ancestor, will he discover the young man's terrible secret? How much do we really know about events in the past? And should we risk asking questions if we're going to be afraid of the answers?
Embodiment and Everyday Cyborgs

Embodiment and Everyday Cyborgs

Your organs are failing and require replacement. If you had the choice, would you prefer organs from other humans or non-human animals, or would you choose a ‘cybernetic’ medical implant?Using a range of social science methods and drawing on the sociology of the body and embodiment, biomedicine and technology, this book asks what happens to who we are (our identity) when we change what we are (our bodies)? From surveying young adults about whether they would choose options such as 3-D bioprinting, living or deceased human donation, or non-human animal or implantable biomechanical devices, to interviewing those who live with an implantable cardiac defibrillator, Haddow invites us to think about what kind of relationship we have with our bodies. She concludes that the reliance on ‘cybernetic’ medical devices create ‘everyday cyborgs’ who can experience alienation and new forms of vulnerability at implantation and activation.Embodiment and everyday cyborgs invites readers to consider the relationship between personal identity and the body, between humans and non-human animals, and our increasing dependency on ‘smart’ implantable technology. The creation of new techno-organic hybrid bodies makes us acutely aware of our own bodies and how ambiguous the experience of embodiment actually is. It is only through understanding how modifications such as transplantation, amputation and implantation make our bodies a ‘presence’ to us, Haddow argues, that we realise our everyday experience of our bodies as an absence. An electronic edition of this book is freely available under a Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND) licence.

The story of Liverpool's women is one of diversity and contrast. This iconic port has welcomed countless nationalities over the centuries, both as residents and passing migrants; it has experienced both great prosperity, and crushing poverty. Liverpool's women have lived in unhealthy court dwellings, and comfortable suburbs; helped each other, educated each other, and stood together against common adversaries such as poor living conditions, and enemies in wartime; they have lived, loved, worked, fought, laughed, wept, worshipped, and survived in their own unique way. Containing rarely seen illustrations, this book will take you on an adventure through 100 years of Liverpool's history, with a focus on its courageous, hospitable, caring, intelligent and adventurous women. In this honest account, you will meet women from all walks of life, be they politician, home maker, impoverished migrant, the ladies from the big house', preacher at a chapel, teacher, prostitute, activist, prisoner, and more. Some of them you may have heard of, such as Battling Bessie' Braddock MP, suffragette Jeannie Mole; many are the forgotten women of history you will encounter for the first time. All of them in their own way make up the kaleidoscope of women's history in this great city.
