The Creation; a Sacred Oratorio. Composed by Joseph Haydn, Doctor of Music;
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century.++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. The theodicy essays of Gottfried Leibniz are considered landmark examples which treat the subject thoroughly and comprehensively with lengthy and incisive philosophical discussions. Theodicy is defined as the study of the question: ""Why does evil occur in a world with a God who is good?"" - Leibniz was far from being the only scholar and philosopher troubled by evil, which he viewed as a problem that required answering from a religious and philosophical perspective. Authoring his treatises in the early 18th century, Leibniz ably details his own and past arguments on the theme of theodicy. It was arguably the issue which occupied (and preoccupied) his mind more than any other: indeed, this book represents the only book-length treatise ever written by Leibniz. This edition of the text includes all the original appendices, which include subsequent reflections on the original book. The translation to English from Norwegian by scholar E. M. Huggard is among the most appreciated to this day.

Prosperity and Depression

Prosperity and Depression

Gottfried Haberler

AldineTransaction

First issued in 1937 and then revised in 1957, Prosperity and Depression focuses on the task of analyzing existing theories of the business cycle and deriving a synthetic account of the nature and possible causes of economic fluctuations. The application, as far as possible, of quantitative tests to the various causal hypotheses - influences the manner in which the problem of economic cycles is approached in Haberler's book.The first part on "The Systematic Analysis of the Theories of the Business Cycle" gathers various hypotheses of explanation, to test their logical consistency and their compatibility with one another and with accepted economic principles. It gives a well rounded picture of the possible explanations of economic fluctuations. The second part, "Synthetic Exposition Relating to the Nature and Causes of Business Cycles" argues that there are many points where no definitive solution can be proposed, but have a number of possibilities. The choice between these can then be made only on the basis of empirical investigations.Haberler argues that theoretical reasoning supported only by broad facts as one happens to know without special statistical or historical investigations can create intelligent questions, but it cannot definitely answer them. By analyzing various theories and explanations of the business cycle, this book clarifies a number of issues presupposed. The difference between the theories analyzed is not as complicated as is sometimes believed. In fact it is shown how theories which seem prima facie to contradict one another can be reconciled. David Felix's new introduction underlines the continuing importance of this classic.

Written by a renowned expert, Geoinformation: Remote Sensing, Photogrammetry and Geographic Information Systems, Second Edition gives you an overarching view of how remote sensing, photogrammetry, and geographic information systems work together in an interdisciplinary manner. The book presents the required basic background of the geoinformatics concept in which the different methodologies must be combined. It details the principal components of remote sensing, from theoretical principles to advanced image analysis and interpretation techniques, sensor components, and operating platforms.New and Updated in the Second Edition: Web-based image viewing with Google EarthAerial platformsExisting digital photogrammetric software systems, including Intergraph image station, Autodesk, and Oracle SpatialLand management and cadasterImaging sensors such as laser scanning, image spectrometry, radar imaging, and radar interferometryWith the advent of high-resolution satellite systems in stereo, the theory of analytical photogrammetry restituting 2D image information into 3D is of increasing importance, merging the remote sensing approach with that of photogrammetry. This text describes the fundamentals of these approaches in detail, with an emphasis on global, regional, and local applications. It provides a short introduction to the GPS satellite positioning system in the context of data integration. An extensive overview of the basic elements of GIS technologies and data management approaches, as well as the widely employed positioning systems such as GPS and GSM networks, complete the presentation of the technological framework for geoinformation. Appropriate for GIS courses at all levels, the book proceeds beyond the science and technology to tackle cost considerations and practical implementation issues, giving you a starting point for multidisciplinary new activities and services in the future.
Discourse on Metaphysics and the Monadology

Discourse on Metaphysics and the Monadology

Gottfried Leibniz

Noted German polymath Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz was one of the most important philosophers of the Enlightenment era. A contemporary of Isaac Newton, Leibniz is today best remembered for independently developing a system of differential and integral calculus. As a philosopher he ranks as one of three great proponents of rationalism, along with Rene Descartes and Baruch Spinoza. Unpublished until the middle of the 19th century, Leibniz's "Discourse on Metaphysics" is a philosophical work in which the author argues that "God is an absolutely perfect being" and therefore our world is the best possible one in which a perfect being could create. Also included in this volume is the "Monadology". Written near the end of Leibniz's life and published posthumously, the "Monadology" is a collection of elementary principles or "monads", in which the philosopher seeks answers to the nature of reality and tries to address the problems that arise from mind-body dualism. Both admired and ridiculed by his contemporaries, Leibniz's works remain as an important part of the canon of Enlightenment era philosophy. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper and follows the translation of George R. Montgomery.

Gottfried von Strassburg's early 13th century retelling of the "Tristan and Iseult" legend is widely regarded as one of the most important works of the German Middle Ages. Left unfinished at the time of his death and subsequently finished by Heinrich von Freiberg and Ulrich von T rheim, Strassburg's "Tristan" is held out as one of the best examples of the "common", as opposed to the "courtly", version of the tale. "Tristan" tells the tale of a young Cornish knight, Tristan, who is tasked with the mission of escorting his Uncle King Mark of Cornwall's wife to be, the Princess Iseult from Ireland. However during the journey, when the two ingest a love potion, their fortunes are sent unexpectedly in a different direction. The exact origin of this classic and tragic tale of chivalric romance is unknown and thus comes down to us from its numerous retellings, of which Strassburg's version stands apart in its excellence. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper and follows the prose translation of Jessie L. Weston.
The Federalist

The Federalist

Originally published in 1960. The Federalist—a treatise on free government in peace and security—is one of the most important contributions to the literature on constitutional democracy and federalism in the United States. Scholars, lawyers, judges, and statesmen in the United States and abroad have lauded the impact of The Federalist. John Quincy Adams referred to the papers as a "classical work in the English language, and a commentary on the Constitution of the United States, of scarcely less authority than the Constitution itself." Since the publication of the papers, historians have analyzed the collected work from a variety of approaches, but at the time that Gottfried Dietze wrote in 1960, scholars mainly concentrated on specific components of The Federalist. Dietze intervened in this scholarship by offering a comprehensive study of the work, which promoted federalism as both a means for establishing free government and securing peace within a federal state and for maintaining security under the threat of foreign powers. In addition to a theoretical examination of the text, Dietze brings in a historical component by fleshing out how its authors were shaped by the political atmosphere in which they lived and how their writings transformed political literature for generations to come
