Unquestionably one of the greatest novelists of his time, Graham Greene had always guarded his privacy, remaining aloof, mysterious and unpredictable. Nonetheless, he took the surprising step of allowing Norman Sherry complete access to letter and diaries, and gave his consent to this full and frank biography in three volumes - the first of which takes Greene's life up to the beginning of the Second World War when he published some of his most remarkable work, including Journey Without Maps (1935), England Made Me (1935), A Gun for Sale (1936), Brighton Rock (1938) and The Confidential Agent (1939). At the heart of the story lies a remarkable series of letters Greene wrote to his wife, Vivien, for whose sake he became a Catholic. They show us an unknown, younger Greene, impassioned and romantic. Sherry also recounts in fascinating detail how Greene struggled to turn himself into a novelist and learn his craft, and follows his subject's pre-war footsteps to West Africa and Mexico, where he was able to penetrate far into the strange and alarming territory that Greene has made his own. Carrying commuters, day-trippers and holidaymakers, more than twenty steamers once served more than fifty piers on Scotland's River Clyde. Richard Orr attended the High School of Glasgow, then read classics and law at Glasgow University, serving as assistant purser on the River Clyde during eight summer vacations. His love of the River Clyde and its ships never left him, and he organised various educational charters in the later 1970s. In retirement, he maintains his varied interests including ships, travel and hillwalking. He lives with his wife June in the home of his birth in the south side of Glasgow and has two grown up children.

In May 1949, the Scottish artist Wilhelmina Barns-Graham (1912-2004) visited the Grindelwald Glacier in Switzerland. It was a trip which would have a profound and lasting impact on her work. Charting the journey, the beautiful work it stimulated and wider questions around glacial landscapes, then and now, this publication provides insights that will expand our understanding of both an acclaimed body of work and the artist who created it. That Barns-Graham produced her final glacier painting in 1994, some 45 years after her sole visit to Switzerland, is testament to the influence that the experience had on her. So too are her 100 or so individual glacier works - made first between 1949 and 1952 and then in revisiting the subject between 1976 and 1994. Including a complete catalogue of the glacier paintings, this book presents the definitive account of a trip that would transform the artistic imagination of one of the foremost British painters of the twentieth century.
