Through a variety of themes and emotions, this collection of poems -- one for each week of the year -- examines life's ups and downs, our hopes and dreams, our successes and failures. Many have double-meanings, but all are passionate, honest, and sincere.
Towards a Polemical Ethics

Towards a Polemical Ethics

Gregory Fried

Martin Heidegger held Plato responsible for inaugurating the slow slide of the West into nihilism and the apocalyptic crisis of modernity. In this book, Gregory Fried defends Plato against Heidegger’s critiques. While taking seriously Heidegger’s analysis of human finitude and historicity, Fried argues that Heidegger neglects the transcending ideals that necessarily guide human life as situated in time and place. That neglect results in Heidegger’s disastrous politics, unhinged from a practical reason grounded in the philosophical search from a truth that transcends historical contingency. Thinking both with and against Heidegger, Fried shows how Plato’s skeptical idealism provides an ethics that captures both the situatedness of finite human existence and the need for transcendent ideals. The result is a novel way of understanding politics and ethical life that Fried calls a polemical ethics, which mediates between finitude and transcendence by engaging in constructive confrontation with both traditions and other persons. The contradiction between the founding ideals of the United States and its actual history of racism and slavery provides an occasion to discuss polemical ethics in practice.

When Auggie Lopez returns to Wroxall College, he's determined that his second year will be different from the chaos he faced as a freshman. He's living in the Sigma Sigma house, he's got a good group of friends, and his social media presence is growing. Meeting a hot older guy on move-in day is just the cherry on top. All he has to do now is avoid getting dragged into another murder. That last part, though, turns out to be easier said than done, especially when Auggie's ex-roommate, Orlando, asks for help. Orlando's brother Cal has gone missing, and Orlando wants Auggie to find him.Auggie knows he'll need help, but recruiting his friend-and crush-Theo is not as straightforward as he expects. While Auggie was gone for the summer, Theo has started dating someone, and neither Theo nor Auggie knows how to handle the shift in their relationship.Finding Orlando's brother dead only makes their situation more complicated. Although the police are quick to write off the homicide as a drug deal gone wrong, Auggie and Theo aren't so sure, and Orlando begs them to keep investigating. To learn the truth, Auggie and Theo will have to untangle a web of lies while keeping each other safe from a killer who is determined to stop them. As Auggie and Theo dig deeper, they realize that Cal was a stranger even to the people who thought they knew him. And Auggie and Theo both begin to fear that they are also strangers to each other.
Take a Moment to Relax Biblical Word Search
Life often has a habit of changing our schedules, sweeping us onto busy lanes and weighing down our mind with issues. I have found that retreating to a calm place and seizing a few moments to relax can be very beneficial (Psalm 116:7 NCV). Within the borders of this book, you will find opportunities to relax, as you walk through some biblical word searches and possibly discover a few things along the way. I was motivated to complete this work while attending to my mom's bedside, Mrs. Lillie Sims, as she was in home hospice care. My mother always encouraged my creativity. The Lord enabled me to develop this work between her intervals of sleeping. My mom transitioned to be with the Lord January 25, 2022, and I dedicate this project to my mom, my wife, Ellen, and my family. Pastor Gregory M. Sims is a native Washingtonian married to the former Ellen R. Johnson and has had the privileged to serve as Shepherd of the New Canaan Baptist Church in NE, DC since 1989. He has facilitated workshops, revivals, seminars, and retreats throughout the DMV for over 46 years. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies from the Lancaster Bible College with honors, in May of 2013. He earned his Master of Arts in Leadership Studies from Capital Seminary, graduating Summa Cum Laude, May 2018. Blessed with four children, my wife and I have always incorporated games and creative activities in our home journey. I believe that a cheerful heart is good medicine (Proverbs 17) and enjoy opportunities to engage in creative activities to relax. I began creating word searches for attendees of seminars and then regularly for our church members at Christmas.
Hiddensee: A Tale of the Once and Future Nutcracker
In this imaginative novel rooted in the rich soil of early-nineteenth-century German Romanticism, beloved New York Times bestselling author Gregory Maguire twins an origin legend of the famous Nutcracker with the life of Drosselmeier, the toymaker who carves himGregory Maguire's novels have been called "bewitching," "remarkable," "extraordinary," "engrossing," "amazing," and "delicious." Having brought his legions of devoted readers to Oz in Wicked, Wonderland in After Alice and Dickensian London in Lost, Maguire now takes us to the Black Forest of Bavaria and Munich of the Brothers Grimm and E. T. A. Hoffman. Hiddensee recreates the backstory of the Nutcracker, reimaging how this entrancing creature came to be carved and how it magically guided an ailing little girl named Klara through a dreamy paradise on a snowy Christmas Eve. It also brings to life the mysterious godfather Drosselmeier--the ominous, canny, one-eyed toymaker made immortal by Petipa and Tchaikovsky's ballet--who presents the once and future Nutcracker to Klara, his goddaughter. But Hiddensee is not just a retelling of a classic story. Maguire discovers in the flowering of German Romanticism a migrating strain of a Hellenic mystery-cult, and ponders a profound question: how a person who is abused by life, short-changed and challenged, can access secrets that benefit the disadvantaged and powerless. Ultimately, Hiddensee, offers a message of hope. If the compromised Godfather Drosselmeier can bring an enchanted Nutcracker to a young girl in distress, perhaps everyone, however lonely or marginalized on the eve of a winter holiday, has something precious to share.

At the age of 11, I suddenly lost my mother to a Pulmonary Embolism, I saw her pass. My father passed 9 years later when I was 21, he again passed suddenly while I was at work, by the time my brother and I got to the hospital he was gone. My one sister had a seizure, she had one after another, they put her in a Coma for three months, she had been given the last rights, but thank God she survived. Still today she has seizures and can't go out without her husband. My oldest brother, the closest thing I had to my father got emphysema, he suffered for over 3 years, he could not lay down for two years, he passed after a long fight. In 2003 when I was 47, I had a Massive Heart Attack, they call it the Widow maker, I had a Balloon in my heart for 5 days. Five Months later after going to Cardiac rehab on Saturday November 1st, All saint's day, I retuned home Finding my Son Phillip unresponsive, I tried CPR until the EMT arrived, but to no avail. The worst day of my life. In 2010 I had a second Heart Attack and got Prostate Cancer and required my Prostate to be removed, this was another challenging year. I lost my oldest sister in 2019, She was 81 years old. The reason I tell you all this, is that you need to have faith in GOD, push thru the pain by Leaning on GOD and family for your strength, find a Church, I have been led by God to the Journey Within Church and the founder Janet Nohavec, who I credit with saving my life. So, let God guide you thru.
