The Time Machine is a science fiction novella by H. G. Wells, published in 1895. Wells is generally credited with the popularization of the concept of time travel by using a vehicle that allows an operator to travel purposefully and selectively. The term "time machine", coined by Wells, is now almost universally used to refer to such a vehicle (Also see "the anacronopete").
The author writes, "It is enough to say that when Allan Quatermain, in the opening sentence of his narrative, speaks of this as 'one of the strangest of all the adventures which have befallen me in the course of a life, that so far can scarcely be called tame or humdrum, ' he is well within the mark."
