Here is a theory that dreams are employed by the Creator of the Universe as a means of monitoring the condition of Earth's inhabitants. Here are twenty-four poems revealing insights into humanity. And here is a stage play into which the author enters himself as the protagonist and gives himself the name Walter Castlekeep. Consider the three elements --- theory, poems, play --- to be one man's conception of the ravelled sleeve of Creation, the way it was. The way it is.
Hal Urban's latest book poses a challenge. It challenges us to break through the notion of religious barriers to embrace faith in any form. And within that faith, it asks us to honour the teachings of wisdom and character, and encourages us to put those teachings into practice. We all know the 10 Commandments. Most of us have no problem avoiding murder, theft or adultery. We don't need to recommit ourselves to following these commandments and we do continue to honour them. They're sacred. The 10 Commandments of Common Senselooks more closely at some of the Bible's other "commandments": five things we should devote ourselves to doing because they can enrich our lives and the lives of others. Many of them are far more challenging than the original ten, but they provide wise and practical advice for all of us, no matter what we believe.
Offers a positive approach to life and insights into how to develop one's potential to the fullest, presenting twenty character-building principles--ranging from rediscovering the importance of having fun to learning the value of kind words to redefining one's idea of success.
Thoughts move people more than events do. It is a matter of attitude. Ben Franklin realized certain character traits were more likely to help him if he identified them and worked to perfect them. You can follow Franklin's example. You too can use the Facets of Life to get what you want and deserve from your life. This collection of facets comprises the top concerns people have identified as essential for self-mastery. Each of the facets is discussed from various angles. We will look at what each one is, how it is important to most people, and what to do to make it a more prominent force in your life.
Miles was so trustworthy everyone dumped secrets on him, so many secrets he should have made a list. There were two secrets he wished he could forget. One began as a liquor sampling with the sex-starved wife of a pillar of the Quarterback Club, a man who openly praised Miles' honesty and integrity. When the wife pursued the relationship, Miles became paranoid that her husband would find out. His other mistake was mentioning the Church Fund to the wrong person. Miles learned how far the Las Vegas boys would go to protect their secret investment. The Quarterback Club directors often enlisted Miles' aid in resolving delicate tasks, and now they asked him to tackle the most crucial crisis the Club had ever faced, one that could ruin its reputation, perhaps destroy it. A prominent woman had petitioned to become a member of the elite all-male Club.
John Cleland is among the most scandalous figures in British literary history, both celebrated and attacked as a pioneer of pornographic writing in English. His first novel, "Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure", or "Fanny Hill", is one of the enduring literary creations of the eighteenth century, despite over two-hundred years of legal prohibition. Yet the full range of his work is still too little known. In this study, Hal Gladfelder combines groundbreaking archival research into Cleland's tumultuous life with incisive readings of his sometimes extravagant, sometimes perverse body of work, positioning him as a central figure in the development of the novel and in the construction of modern notions of authorial and sexual identity in eighteenth-century England. Rather than a traditional biography, "Fanny Hill in Bombay" presents a case history of a renegade authorial persona, based on published works, letters, private notes, and newly discovered legal testimony. It retraces Cleland's career from his years as a young colonial striver with the East India Company in Bombay through periods of imprisonment for debt and of estrangement from collaborators and family, shedding light on his paradoxical status as literary insider and social outcast. As novelist, critic, journalist, and translator, Cleland engaged with the most challenging intellectual currents of his era yet at the same time was vilified as a pornographer, atheist, and sodomite. Reconnecting Cleland's writing to its literary and social milieu, this study offers new insights into the history of authorship and the literary marketplace and contributes to contemporary debates on pornography, censorship, the history of sexuality, and the contested role of literature in eighteenth-century culture.
