Descanso for My Father

Descanso for My Father

Harrison Candelaria Fletcher

Bison Books
2012
pokkari
When his father died, Harrison Candelaria Fletcher wasn't quite two. His mother packed up his father's belongings, put the boxes in a hall closet, and closed the door. The "man in a box" remained a mystery, hardly mentioned, and making only rare appearances in stories when Fletcher or his siblings inquired. Meanwhile, his young Hispanic mother transformed herself into an artist, scouting the back roads and secondhand shops of New Mexico for relics and unlikely treasures to add to her "little shrines," or descansos. "Look closely," she'd say to her son. "Everything tells a story." This book is Fletcher's literary descanso, a piecing together—from moments and objects and words—of a father's life, of the life lived without that father, and of his own mixed-race identity. Fletcher's reflections unfold like a collage, offering a rich array of images and stories of life with his single mother, organizing weekend family car trips to explore graveyards and adobe ruins; of growing up on the fault lines of class and culture; of being a father who never had one of his own to learn from. From incidents and observations, Fletcher assembles a beautifully crafted portrait of his family's unspoken affliction with loss over the decades, a portrait that finally evokes the father at its heart.

Finding Querencia

Finding Querencia

Harrison Candelaria Fletcher

OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY PRESS

pokkari
With its roots in the Spanish verb querer-"to want, to love"-the term querencia has been called untranslatable but has come to mean a place of safety and belonging, that which we yearn for when we yearn for home. In this striking essay collection, Harrison Candelaria Fletcher shows that querencia is also a state of being: the peace that arises when we reconcile who we are. A New Mexican of mixed Latinx and white ethnicity, Candelaria Fletcher ventures into the fault lines of culture, landscape, and spirit to discover the source of his lifelong hauntings. Writing in the persona of coyote, New Mexican slang for "mixed," he explores the hyphenated elements within himself, including his whiteness. Blending memory, imagination, form, and language, each essay spirals outward to investigate, accept, and embrace hybridity. Ultimately, Finding Querencia offers a new vocabulary of mixed-ness, a way to reconcile the crosscurrents of self and soul.
Wild Theater: Staging the Margins of Baroque Ideology in the Spanish Comedia
In Wild Theater, Harrison Meadows critically examines the genealogy of one of world literature's most well-known figures: the "Wildman." From its earliest manifestations in works such as The Epic of Gilgamesh to more recent films like The Green Knight, the transhistorical figure of the Wildman has fascinated generations of scholars and the broader public for centuries. Despite this widespread interest, the place of the Wildman--and ideas of wildness more generally--have been underexplored in scholarship on the Spanish Baroque period. Wild Theater addresses this lacuna in scholarship by exploring the ideas of wildness in the Spanish comedia, a popular Spanish Golden Age theater genre that combined elements of tragedy and comedy. In five compelling chapters, Meadows argues that a major shift occurred during the Baroque period, whereby the largely positive quality of previous iterations in the genealogy of wildness take on a negative character in the cultural ethos--and that this fundamental shift was representative of the influence of Spanish colonialism on racial thinking and a larger set of changes in how early modern people viewed gender and class. In this way, the book identifies the wild figure's dramatic roots in the carnivalesque as an indispensable point of departure to plot the trajectory of wild representation in the theater of the Hispanic Baroque. From this guiding premise, Meadows traces the carryovers, transformations, and negations of the carnivalesque into early modern dramaturgy, specifically the Spanish comedia, which are emblematic of the poetic and ideological features of the emerging commercial theater in Iberia.

The Young Kim Philby

Kim Philby is perhaps the most notorious traitor in British History and the archetypal spy: ingenious, charming and deceitful. The reluctance of the British and Russian governments to reveal full details of his career meant that for many years a shortage of evidence fuelled controversy. Was Philby an ideological spy, working for the Soviet Union out of Communist conviction, or was he prompted by a personality defect to choose a life of treachery? Was Philby the perfect agent, the ‘KGB masterspy’, or just plain lucky? In this new biography, Edward Harrison re-examines the crucial early years of Philby’s work as a Soviet agent and British intelligence officer using documents from the United Kingdom National Archives, and private papers. He shows how Philby established an early pattern of deceit and betrayed his father St John Philby. But the book also demonstrates how in all the major decisions Philby slavishly sought to emulate his father. This contradicts the myth of independence Philby sought to propagate in 'My Silent War' (his memoirs), along with other deceptions. Later chapters offer the first detailed study of Philby’s work as a counter-espionage officer during the Second World War, examining his rapid promotion and providing a substantial explanation of why he was appointed head of the anti-Soviet section of the British Secret Intelligence Service. Harrison also explains that Philby was never wholly trusted by the Soviet secret service.

From the time we are born, many things shape the way we think. Our culture, family, schooling, parenting, marriage, and jobs all play a part in building our thoughts and how we see ourselves and the world. If we grow up in a family that values hard work or education, a push to work hard, it adds to the complexity of our thoughts. Same would apply to those who were raised in a dysfunctional home, where addictions, abuse, trauma and even being raised by a single parent affects our thinking. It's important to remember that thoughts themselves aren't good or bad, it's what we do with them that really matters. As children, our minds are like sponges soaking up everything around us. This shapes the views and biases that might stay with us our whole lives. But our thinking doesn't have to stay the same. Over time, we can change the way we think. This ability to change our thoughts can make a big difference. It can help us move past harmful thinking patterns and become more flexible in our thinking. We often focus more on negative thoughts than positive ones. This might come from feeling insecure, not confident, or from situations that point out our flaws. Instead of blaming ourselves or others, we should try to understand why we think this way. We need to learn how to separate ourselves and others from problems and target the problem and not the person. Our beliefs also play a big role in how we think. Being open to new ideas and ready to question our own beliefs can help us grow mentally. If we stick too firmly to old beliefs, we limit how much we can learn and grow. There are different parts of our brain are responsible for different kinds of thinking. Some of us might be more logical and analytical, while others are more creative and emotional. Whether or not we have a clear plan for our lives can either make our thoughts more chaotic or give us a sense of direction.Thoughts are also influenced by the world around us. Advice from someone we respect or a mean comment from someone else can change how we feel and think. Our perceptions can have a negative impact on our lives more than we can imagine. Being bullied or manipulated can mess with our ability to think clearly and make us doubt ourselves. This understanding helps us navigate through our thoughts more effectively, allowing us to change, refine, and even completely transform how we think. Knowing where our thoughts come from not only offers insight into our own minds but also empowers us to guide our thoughts in new, more positive directions.Unwanted, intrusive thoughts can interrupt our peace of mind. These thoughts usually come from past bad experiences, traumas, or deep fears. Learning how to handle these unwanted thoughts can really help improve our mental health and happiness.Just like an athlete works hard to be in top shape, we can train our minds to focus on success and well-being. This strong mindset includes being resilient, staying focused, changing our behaviours, choices and always trying to better ourselves. Finally, seeing ourselves as others see us can give us a complete picture of who we are and how we think. This means being honest with ourselves, recognizing our faults, and pursuing to become better than our best. By doing this, we can overcome obstacles, take on challenges, and move past regrets. This leads to a life that's more rewarding and meaningful. This book will help your understand you thoughts and how to get rid of unwanted intrusive thoughts that is affecting you day-today life. Your will be empowered to tap into the power of resiliency to become an achiever in life.

Spiritual Abundance - Unlocking the Power of the Holy Spirit Gifts and Nurturing His Fruit " explores the transformative power of the Holy Spirit in our lives. These gifts, bestowed upon us by the Spirit, are not merely for our own benefit but are meant to enrich the lives of those around us.The Apostle Paul beautifully articulates the diversity of these gifts in Corinthians, reminding us that each of us has been endowed with unique manifestations of the Spirit. From the word of wisdom to the gift of healing, from the discerning of spirits to speaking in tongues, these gifts are divine expressions of the Spirit's presence and power in our lives. But alongside these remarkable gifts, we also encounter the fruit of the Spirit-a bouquet of virtues that blossom within us as we walk in step with the Holy Spirit. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control-these are the fruits that adorn the branches of our spiritual journey, nourished by the life-giving sap of the Holy Spirit.Just as a tree bears fruit according to its nature, so too do we, as believers, bear the fruit of the Spirit as we abide in Him. Each fruit is a testament to the transformative work of the Holy Spirit in our hearts, shaping us into vessels of love, vessels of joy, vessels of peace, and vessels of all the other virtues that reflect the character of Christ. In this exploration of spiritual abundance, we will uncover the profound significance of both the gifts and fruits of the Spirit. We'll learn how to cultivate these gifts, allowing them to flourish and impact the world around us. We'll also discover the importance of nurturing the fruit of the Spirit, tending to the garden of our hearts so that it may yield a bountiful harvest of spiritual virtues. The nine gifts of the Spirit, as outlined in 1 Corinthians 12:7-11, serve as manifestations of the Spirit's presence and power in our lives. From words of wisdom to the working of miracles, each gift is given for the benefit of all, equipping us to fulfill our unique calling and purpose in the Body of Christ. As the Spirit distributes these gifts according to His will, we are invited to embrace them with humility and gratitude, recognizing their potential to bring about transformation and impact in our lives and communities. In addition to the gifts of the Spirit, we've also explored the nurturing of His fruit-the nine virtues that reflect the character of Christ Himself. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control are not merely attributes to aspire to but essential components of a life lived in alignment with the Holy Spirit. As we cultivate these fruits in our lives, we become vessels of His love and grace, radiating His light to a world in need. Our journey through "Spiritual Abundance" has been marked by moments of revelation, empowerment, and deepening intimacy with the Holy Spirit. From the initial understanding of His gifts to the ongoing cultivation of His fruit, each step has brought us closer to the heart of God and His purposes for our lives. As we continue to unlock the power of His gifts and nurture His fruit within us, may we walk in the fullness of His presence and purpose, bringing glory to His name and ushering in His kingdom on earth as it is in heaven.
