Henry Hulton and the American Revolution

Henry Hulton and the American Revolution

Colonial Society of Massachusetts
2010
sidottu
Henry Hulton was an Englishman who moved to Boston in 1767 as a member of the new American Board of Customs Commissioners. The board was supposed to curtail smuggling and bring greater efficiency to the administration of empire. It failed, and Hulton fled Massachusetts in 1776, joining an exodus of the politically displaced. Hulton eventually wrote a never-published history of the American rebellion as he experienced it. Although his complaints about the 'demagogues' who dominated Massachusetts politics echo those made by other Loyalists. Hulton adds another dimension to our understanding. As an Englishman, he could be more detached from the problems of empire than Loyalists who had been driven from their native land. For those interested in the complexities of historical causation, this interpretation provides a telling case study of how an author can combine individual action with deeper forces to explain events. Though not a historical determinist, Hulton did see rebellion as the logical result of American attitudes and behaviors that London allowed to go unchecked for too long. Hulton's history, his letters, and the letters of his sister, Ann, who lived with him outside Boston - all of which are reproduced here - provide an unusual glimpse into the onset of the Revolution in Massachusetts. Hulton was himself an intriguing figure, an Englishman seeking to secure fame and fortune abroad, first in Germany, then on the island of Antigua, then again in Germany, with a stop in London before ambition took him back across the Atlantic, this time to Massachusetts. He would end his days a retired gentleman living in the English countryside, frustrated by his experiences on both sides of the Atlantic but determined to teach his five sons the lessons about life that he learned and recorded in this history.

Humans are just simple gadgets invented to make the lives of robots easier. Then his dad's boss gives them a HueManTech ETC-420- GX-2 and Henry's life is turned upside down. This human unit is like no other. It can read, play video games and, it seems to Henry, think for itself. In fact, the more time Henry spends with the ETC, the more the gadget seems less like a human unit and more like a full-fledged robot with thoughts and feelings. But that's not possible. Is it? And if the ETC really is as smart as it seems, Henry can't help but wonder: Is the human just the next-generation technology or a secret government weapon that will ultimately destroy them all?
Henry's Big Kaboom: Henry Knox Claims the Artillery from Fort Ticonderoga, 1775-1776. a Ballad
Considered one of the most stupendous logistical feats of the American Revolution, an expedition organized by Col. Henry Knox transports fifty-eight tons of brass and iron weaponry from Fort Ticonderoga (where they had been left behind by the British) down the Hudson River, over the Berkshire hills, across today's Massachusetts to Cambridge, and finally to Dorchester Heights overlooking Boston. Author Mary Ames Mitchell, a former elementary school teacher and a descendant of Henry Knox, wrote and illustrated this story as a sing-along ballad for her grandchildren.

Henry Miller: The Last Days: A Memoir

Henry Miller: The Last Days: A Memoir

Barbara Kraft

It could be argued that it was mere chance that drew Barbara Kraft, a young aspiring writer, into friendship with each party of one of literature's most famous love affairs: Ana s Nin, and then Henry Miller; yet, upon reflection, it seems it was meant to be. In 1974 Kraft signed up for a writing course with Nin only months before the discovery of the cancer that would end the famous diarist's life two years later, and Kraft would prove to be a faithful and dependable friend and companion until the end. During this time, Kraft kept a diary detailing the events of her relationship with Nin, which would become the heart of her acclaimed memoir Ana s Nin: The Last Days. Only months after Nin's death, Kraft attended a "Q & A" talk by Henry Miller and, inspired by his dynamism, did a "crash" rereading of much of his work. This rediscovery led to Kraft writing and reading "An Open Letter to Henry Miller" on an NPR station, which Miller eventually heard and admired. Wanting to meet Kraft, Miller invited her to cook dinner for him, and, of course, to engage in a long and interesting talk with him, a habit Miller developed during his destitute days in 1930s Paris when he made sure he was invited for lunch and dinner in exchange for good conversation each day of the week. While no longer destitute, and in failing health, the ritual of dinner and conversation kept on until the very end. Kraft became one of Miller's sixteen regular cooks, and she developed not only a comradery with him, but a mutually nurturing friendship for the last two years of his life. This memoir is an inside look at the chaos that ruled the famous house on Ocampo Drive in Pacific Palisades, the long stream of people who lived or crashed there, the revolving door of seekers, celebrities, scholars and filmmakers, and how Miller maintained a fulfilling and creative life in the midst of all the commotion. We see the dynamics of Miller's relationships with his family, his young love interest and those who professed to care for him as his health declined. We discover how some sought to exploit him and how others rose to the occasion when he needed help. It is a highly personal story in which Kraft captures Miller's conversations so perfectly that one can imagine his voice uttering the words.Henry Miller: The Last Days is a celebration of Miller's indomitable spirit as his body failed him, his rebellion against old age, his refusal to give in, his never-ending submission to the creative urge, his battle to preserve his right to dinner, wine and talk even if it meant superhuman effort. It is the story of how one of America's most celebrated writers could have died alone in a house full of strangers. After absorbing Barbara Kraft's sensitive and yet bold narrative, one cannot help but have even more respect for Henry Miller's courage and humility, and rejoice in his final triumph.
