Offering the most extensive analysis of the ministry and thought of Richard Spurling, Phillips places Spurling's emerging thought and identity within the context of his theological influences. Along the way he demonstrates Spurling's indispensible role in the creation of the Church of God while identifying never before revealed details about his ministry, including the fact that he helped establish not one but at least four Christian Union congregations. Turning his attention to A.J. Tomlinson, Phillips offers what is clearly the most detailed examination to date of Tomlinson's life and ministry through 1923. Dans une Republique aristocratique ou l'acces a la parole se trouve reserve aux individus reconnus comme legitimes par le biais des magistratures, l'image que l'orateur projette de lui-meme a travers son discours constitue un facteur essentiel de persuasion. Heritiers d'une rhetorique grecque largement inadaptee aux conditions de l'eloquence romaine, les theoriciens latins ne reussiront que progressivement a penser cet aspect de la pratique oratoire en elaborant une categorie propre a leur environnement politique, social et intellectuel: celle de persona, qui recouvre l'ensemble des qualites attendues de l'orateur. Tout en rapprochant la doctrine rhetorique et les conditions historiques de sa formulation, cette etude adopte un point de vue comparatiste qui permet de preciser ce qui unit et separe les doctrines grecques de l'ethos (caractere) et l'analyse de la persona dans la rhetorique latine des annees 80 av. J.-C. On peut ainsi rendre compte du processus par lequel une formalisation des exigences ethiques et comportementales qui s'imposaient a l'orateur romain a ete peu a peu elaboree, ouvrant la voie a une theorisation complete de la persona oratoire dans les traites ciceroniens de la maturite. En analysant cette construction progressive de la notion de persona oratoire, cet ouvrage aborde la rhetorique comme le revelateur des representations politiques, sociales et philosophiques qui prevalaient dans la Rome du Ier siecle av. J.-C.
