Dreamtime

Dreamtime

J.D. Lynch

John's early years had been relatively uneventful, and his grammar school education had left him with more questions than answers regarding his fascination with life beyond that on Earth. He was also left with a curiosity about Australia, which was to result in his emigrating there some years later. Whilst there, He learned about the Aboriginal belief in the 'Dreamtime' - that time between heaven and earth, where everyone goes when they die. He later makes a discovery, so enormous in its implications for him personally, that he questions, not only his ability to survive, but even his very identity. We journey with him into those

"A Plato Primer" introduces beginning students and the general reader to the main theses, concepts and arguments in Plato's philosophy. Subtle, versatile and multi-faceted though Plato's thought undoubtedly is, it has a core that needs to be explored and savoured. Evans presents this core, as it appears over a large range of his works, spread out over many decades of composition and many philosophical topics. Through all this diversity Plato's original philosophical personality shines through. Evans approaches the material thematically, in terms of modern philosophical categories, in seven main chapters. Within each of these individual treatments Evans follows the lines of argument in the main works of Plato that explore them. Indications about how to pursue given topics in the secondary literature are given in the helpful guide to further reading.

Where did Jesus Die

Where did Jesus Die

God's Word revealed to the Holy Prophet Muhammad(sa)-the Holy Quran-proclaims that Jesus as did not die on the cross. In corroboration of this Quranic revelation, the Promised Messiah(as), Hazrat His Holiness] Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, proposed the revolutionary theory that Jesus(as) died in India. This theory challenges the very foundation of Judeo-Christian views surrounding the advent of the Messiah. Simply put, if Jesus(as) did not die on the cross, he could not be the false prophet that Jews allege him to be citing the criteria in Deuteronomy 18:20 and 21:22-23, nor could he be carrying the curse of all mankind's sins as alluded to in Paul's Epistle to the Galatians 3:13. This forces Judaism to reconsider him as the fulfilment of their anticipated Messiah, and questions the Christian concept of salvation. In Where did Jesus Die?, Maulana Jalal-ud-Din Shams(ra) illustrates that the most rational and credible explanation of Jesus' crucifixion and post-crucifixion events is the one provided by the Holy Prophet(sa) and the Promised Messiah(as). Their account requires neither fabricated miracle nor myth. It just so happens that this is the only account that glorifies Jesus Christ(as) by exonerating him from the accursed death on the cross and restoring him the honour of a truthful prophet when judged against the criteria in the Old Testament.
The Greek Particles

The Greek Particles

J.D. Denniston; K. J. Dover

Bristol Classical Press
1998

This revised edition incorporates additional examples from the original author in conjunction with K.J. Dover's own material. In presenting the first (1934) edition, Denniston set himself to cut down the etymological discussion which characterised his German predecessors in the field. He was concerned to illustrate how particles work and how they nuance Greek language within the corpus of surviving work. His primary aim was "literary, not grammatical or etymological". With this in mind he regarded exemplification as the key, citing much more than his predecessors in the belief that "the reader should be enabled to bathe in examples". When Denniston died (1949) he left copious notes - additional examples, changes of mind in the light of fresh material; these were incorporated by K.J. Dover in the second edition (1950) with new material of his own and the addition of indexes.

Heritage

Heritage

J.D. Fladmark

Donhead Publishing
1993
sidottu
This volume deals with policy, methods and techniques for the stewardship of our land and our cultural assets. The focus is on interpretation and presentation of heritage themes, and the papers should be of interest to those concerned with school and university curricula, those working in museums and galleries, and those in charge of parks and tourist enterprises. Individual contributions celebrate achievements and debate issues relating to the natural and built environment, the future of green tourism, planning and interpretation in museums, parks and private estates. The authors include: Professor David Lowenthal on cultural landscapes; Charles McKean on architecture; David Macmillan on the arts; John Purser on music; Elisabeth Luard on cooking; the Earl of Glasgow on the opening of a family estate to the public; and Gordon Baxter on the heritage of one of Scotland's great enterprise stories in the food industry. The main theme of the book is that we do not always take enough pride in our heritage which is often undervalued and neglected. Positive action is required to raise awareness, to foster respect for our inheritance and to generate a new kind of enterprise that will not endanger the heritage resources on which we depend for enjoyment and jobs.
Elastic Beams and Frames

Elastic Beams and Frames

J D Renton

The book approaches the basic theory of structures from a different perspective from standard pedagogy. There is consideration of work and energy concepts as fundamental and the equations of statics derived from them. Likewise, these concepts, together with that of the characteristic response, are used in the derivation of beam theory. Plane sections remaining plane is then seen as a particular result for isotropic, homogeneous, prismatic beams. The general theory may still be used where none of these conditions holds, and can even be applied to trusses. It also corrects errors in the theory of beam shear. Special topics discussed include non-uniform torsion, the exact analysis of shear, anisotropy, advanced energy methods, optimum structures, and regular frames. Software provided in the book includes seven general purpose programs for analysis of plane, space frames with rigid or pinned joints, and uses the augmented Gaussian elimination process and dynamic storage techniques.
Modern Scottish Painting

Modern Scottish Painting

J.D. Fergusson

Luath Press Ltd

pokkari
In 1939, Scottish artist and sculptor J.D. Fergusson was commissioned to write a fully illustrated book on modern Scottish painting. The Second World War made this difficult and the first edition of Modern Scottish Painting was published in 1943 without illustrations. This new edition – edited, introduced and annotated by Alexander Moffat and Alan Riach – finally brings Fergusson’s project to fruition, illustrating the argument with colour reproductions of Fergusson’s own work. Moffat and Riach frame Fergusson’s important art manifesto for the 21st-century reader, illuminating his views on modern art as he explores questions of technique, education, form and what it means for a painting to be truly modern. Fergusson relates these aspects of modern painting to Scottishness, showing what they mean for Scottish identity, nationalism, independence and the legacy that puritanical Calvinism has left on Scottish art – a particular concern for Fergusson given his recurring subject matter of the female nude.

What's it like covering East Asia as a foreign correspondent? In Spilling Ink, American journalist Jonathan Adams reveals the gritty reality of reporting from the world's most dynamic region. Lured by the biggest story of the twenty-first century - the Rise of China - Adams' first taste of Asia was interning in Hong Kong for the International Herald Tribune. After working as a Newsweek stringer and Taipei Times "copy-monkey," he made the leap to full-time freelancer, choosing fascinating but underreported Taiwan as his base. Adams' decade-long adventure takes the reader from backstreet meetings with sex workers and fortune-tellers to the interviews with presidents (and inadvertently making the news rather than just reporting it). We track down Catholic vigilantes in a violent corner of Mindanao, experience the frenzied build-up to the Beijing Olympics, chase serious stories on algae blooms and labour relations, and pay the bills with clickbait stories on Japanese maid cafes and penis festivals. And along the way we see the death of old media and the emergence of a new, leaner model. Spilling Ink (originally published under the title Welcome Home, Master) is an honest, funny, and revealing behind-the-scenes look at foreign reporting, a nuts-and-bolts account of finding, pitching and writing stories, of making a living as a freelance newsman. Part-travelogue, part Asian journalism primer, the book explains why Adams loved the job and why he ultimately left it.

Buckrack is back He has unfinished business at the University everyone hates to love, but his return to Odium will end in a way that no one could have foreseen. Now in the third term of its annus horribilis, with its third Vice Chancellor of the year, rumours abound that President Trump has instigated a CIA revenge action against the institution whose principal building bears his name. But vengeance is not the only dark motivation on display in the three-day rollercoaster of events which thunders through the final instalment of J. D. Clockman's riotous trilogy. We witness all of Odium's hallmark vices: cynicism and corruption, lust and ambition, betrayal and deceit (not to speak of the seven deadly plot twists of blackmail, homophobia, misogyny, violence, ignorance, vanity and spite). Elfyn Dethbridge, the resentful Deputy Registrar, envisages a way to topple his boss, the abject Nigel Asterisk. James Redman, bereft of his girlfriend, believes that his testicles are becoming mini-zeppelins, and seeks a means of relieving their inflated condition. Will he find it in Drusilla Frost, the overripe, middle-aged PR officer, who embraces her own quest to experience her first orgasm? Why does Robert McNamara, the erstwhile socialist, want to fire five hundred members of staff, seduce his innocent Chinese secretary, and know the contents of the manuals of all the gadgets installed in his luxurious new Vice Chancellorial house? Why does he underreact when a geology professor tells him that the Trump Building may collapse because of the weakness of its own limestone substratum? And why does he overreact when Buckrack reappears on campus?

His unorthodox methods cause the University to spin entirely out of control, leading to an explosive climax that will haunt it for the rest of the year. Seven deadly plot twists follow, involving blackmail, homophobia, misogyny, violence, ignorance, corruption and deceit. Amidst a welter of comic characters are Nigel Asterisk, the weasel-like Registrar; Avril Poon, the opportunistic Union president; James Redman, her morally upstanding deputy; Robert McNamara, a disillusioned specialist in Politics; Drusilla Frost, the overripe head of PR; not to speak of a femme fatale postgraduate student, a Professor of Arabic poetry who always wears a white suit, a Ukrainian lecturer with madcap broken English, an educationist who gives a lecture which causes an international diplomatic incident, a Welsh malcontent, and one or two notorious leaders of the western world. Clockman's hilarious triple-decker epic encapsulates all the features of the twenty-first century academy: sexual intrigue, thirst for revenge, viciousness, erudite stupidity, hypocrisy, selfishness, egomania, greed and iniquity.
