Stephen Moorehouse has finished his first year of art school back east and is excited about returning to his Uncle Phillip's estate in northern Michigan. When he finally arrives, Jeanette, his uncle's beautiful assistant, and the woman he has waited all year to see, is busy catering to a house filled with Hollywood people. Everyone is celebrating Phillip Kahle's return to producing, after the shocking murder of his girlfriend the year before. Stephen's hoping for some quiet time with his uncle and Jeanette when they make a visit to picturesque Mackinac Island. At first, the Victorian homes and horse drawn carriages provide a much calmer backdrop from the party scene back at the mansion, but as they check into the Peacock Inn, their vacation starts down a very different path. Exploiting his grandfather's fame as a world renowned spiritualist, the brooding Edward Van Dyke has turned an aging Victorian mansion into the new "must stay" spot on the island. His nightly s ances have become the talk of the town, but recently they have evolved into something much darker. When Stephen encounters a person from Jeanette's past, the dim corridors of the Peacock Inn turn deadly and provide the final answer to The Peacock Prophecy.

From its beginnings as one of the first stops on the Illinois Central Railroad in 1853, to its position as "the jewel of the south suburbs" today, Homewood has had a rich and varied history. Located 25 miles south of Chicago, Homewood has capitalized on its location along a major rail line, Canadian National Railway today, and the network of interstate expressways that continue to fuel its growth and prosperity. This access to transportation allowed the industrious Gottschalk family to make a fortune selling hay to Chicago's stockyards and, later, bricks to communities throughout the area. Rail access, combined with the abundance of hayfields surrounding Homewood, allowed the area to be transformed into a golfer's paradise at the start of the 20th century and into a suburban bedroom community by mid-century.
Carolina Beach Music Compilation Albums: The Classics
The Stories Behind the AlbumsCarolina beach music--those often-soulful songs about the beach, parties, that special love, dancing or just relaxing in the sun--has long been a mainstay of culture in the Southeast. Yet until the late 1960s, you needed an impressive collection of 45s if you wanted to hear those songs in your home or at a party. But beginning with Atlantic Records' Beach Beat in 1967, that music slowly became available on albums from Bell, Warner Bros., Ripete and other labels. Through interviews and firsthand accounts, author Rick Simmons examines the stories behind those classic albums, the people who created them and the artists and songs that contributed to the phenomenon known as Carolina beach music.

A documentary titled, "Shannon Street: Echoes Under A Blood Red Moon, A Memphis Tragedy", based on the book is due to be released in the Spring of 2016. The film adaptation is in Pre-Production. It is, to this day, the largest number of suspects to die in a non-riotous, local police action in this country. Echoes of Shannon Street is a true crime police procedural that tells the story of the abduction of two white police officers by black cult members in the racially-divided city of Memphis in January, 1983. The event began a highly-publicized and sharply criticized stand-off between hundreds of police officers and the seven suspects barricaded inside a small house in a predominantly black area of north Memphis. For the next day and a half, negotiators attempted in vain to communicate with the leader of the cult, a mentally ill man named Sanders. Inside a local school, top police officials discussed their options. Outside, police officers stood in the cold, anxiously awaiting orders to go inside and rescue their fellow officer. The wait was long and hard, made even more horrific by the fact that for five hours, the officer's beating and his cries for help were heard through bullet-riddled windows and broadcasted through the officer's own radio. Thirty hours later, one of the abducted officers lies in a hospital, a bullet wound through his hand and face. The other is found dead in the living room of the house, cuffed with his own handcuffs, his bloody flashlight nearby. All seven suspects are dead, shot by the department's all-white TACTICAL Unit. Twenty-eight years later, few will talk of it. Actual radio transcripts, witness statements, and autopsy reports included in the thousand page case file are reprinted in whole or in part. Use of these documents, in addition to investigator's notes, crime scene photos, newspaper accounts, and recent interviews with some of the officers involved, tell the hour-by-hour account of a hostage crisis out of control.

A Companion to Adidam brings together a half-dozen scholars of New Religious Movements (NRMs) with a half-dozen of the many academic followers of Adi Da to produce a comprehensive study of a highly creative alternative spiritual group. In addition to chapters on such standard subjects as the movement’s history, membership profile, controversies and the like, Adidam examines unusual (for NRM studies) topics like Adidam’s architecture, and the art and literary productions of the founder. Prior studies of NRMs have largely ignored the cultural dimensions of such groups. There is also an untold story in Adi Da’s attempt to create a new spiritual tradition, a project that has been severely challenged by Adi Da’s passing in 2008. Though new religion specialists have been aware of this group for decades, and though Adi Da and his organization are generally acknowledged to be important, there have been no prior book-length treatments of this group, and few articles. This is the first published research on the current organization, its membership and the extensive corpus of literary and artistic works that Adi Da created over the past two dozen years.
