The San-chieh (Three Levels) was a popular and influential Chinese Buddhist movement during the Sui and T'ang periods, counting powerful statesmen, imperial princes, and even an empress, Empress Wu, among its patrons. In spite, or perhaps because, of its proximity to power, the San-chieh movement ran afoul of the authorities, and its teaching and texts were officially proscribed numerous times over a several-hundred-year history. This study of the San-chieh movement uses manuscripts discovered at Tun-huang to examine the doctrine and institutional practices of this movement in the larger context of Mahayana doctrine and practice. By viewing San-chieh in the context of Mahayana Buddhism, Jamie Hubbard reveals it to be far from heretical and thereby raises important questions about orthodoxy and canon in Buddhism. He shows that many of the hallmark ideas and practices of Chinese Buddhism find an early and unique expression in the San-chieh texts. One such idea, that of the decline of the dharma, was systemized as the astonishing notion of spiritual idiocy as the norm together with the precept breaking monk as the rule (ideas more commonly associated with Japanese Tendai and Pure Land thought).

Asked how the Missouri State Penitentiary compared to other famous prisons, a historian and former prison administrator replied, ' It's older and meaner.' For 168 years, it was everything other prisons were and more. In The Missouri State Penitentiary, Jamie Pamela Rasmussen recounts the long and fascinating history of the place, focusing on the stories of inmates and the struggles by prison officials to provide opportunities for reform while keeping costs down. Tales of prominent prisoners, including Pretty Boy Floyd, Sonny Liston, and James Earl Ray, provide intrigue and insight into the institution's infamous reputation. The founding of the penitentiary helped solidify Jefferson City's position as the state capital. A highlight in the chapter on the Civil War years is the story of George Thompson, who was imprisoned for attempting to help a number of slaves to freedom. The narrative enters the twentieth century with the controversy surrounding the various systems of inmate labor; the effort to make the prison self-supporting eventually caused punishment to be driven by factory needs. The example of Firebug Johnson demonstrates how inmates reacted to the prison labor system while Kate Richards O'Hare's struggles and efforts to improve conditions in the penitentiary illuminate the role of women in the system at the time. A full chapter is devoted to the riot of 1954, and another concentrates on the reforms made in the wake of that catastrophe. Rasmussen also considers the effect inmate lawsuits during the 1980s and 1990s had on prison life before telling the story of the decision to close the prison. The Missouri State Penitentiary provides a fitting account of an institution that was part of Missouri's history for well over a century. Numerous illustrations and a list of recommended reading contribute to the readers' understanding of the history of the institution.
This theoretical and empirical study examines the relationship between the organisation of work, industrial relations, production spaces and the dynamics of capitalist investment. Jamie Gough explores the connections between labour process change, products, local economy and society, spaces and forms of competition, and firm's locational strategies. In a path-breaking analysis he shows that these are closely bound up with the business cycle and other rhythms of investment. Differences within the labour process are central to the argument. Gough explores the divisions between workers arising from these differences and from spatial flows of capital, and suggests strategies through which these divisions might be overcome.

Jamie Drake and Caleb Anderson of Drake/Anderson delight in creating imaginative rooms that emphasise the precious alongside the everyday. This book documents the firm s fearless, eclectic, and deeply informed modernist sensibility in thirteen remarkable residences. The two expand on their point of view in a series of themed essays that illuminate the hallmarks of their bold style: Confident, Sexy, Witty, and Precious. The projects span the world from London to Arizona and New York State (Long Island and Columbia County), in addition to the firm s Manhattan work (uptown, midtown, and downtown, East Side and West). For an international couple s pied-a-ciel on Billionaire s Row, the pair devised a platinum-and-pearl backdrop for spaces filled with a provocative potpourri of materials wood, lacquer, stone, gypsum, glass, velvet, leather, mirror, and bronze. With a sensitive roof-to-slab renovation of a glass house in upstate New York, the two refashioned a private oasis where contemporary pieces, many with references to nature, mix with custom items of the firm s design and an occasional element of midcentury modern. In a full-floor Upper East Side residence in a twenty-first-century building, they wove decorative threads of jewel tones, linear and curved forms, metals, lacquers, stones, sensuous fabrics, and works of art into an extremely glamorous yet family-friendly narrative. With a full renovation of a 1910 estate on Long Island, the duo brought a Georgian brick manse fully into the world of today by amalgamating the fine antiques the owners passionately love with modern and contemporary art. The work of Drake/Anderson harkens to the finest decorators of yesterday, while being firmly focused on the design sensibilities of today and the future.

Munich, 1938. As dark shadows gather at the fringe of the traditional Oktoberfest revelry, Julia Ormesby finds herself falling in love with Conrad von Echlau. Later, on the eve of war, they are forced to recognise that the weight of history leaves them little chance of a life together. Julia moves from rescuing refugees to a pivotal role at Bletchley Park, while Conrad is awarded the Knight’s Cross for the capture of a crucial Allied stronghold on the Belgian border. When he is selected for a top secret mission on the Suffolk coast, their destinies collide once more. Immediately after Dunkirk, the nation is gripped by the fear of enemy invasion — so Churchill’s intelligence chiefs have decreed that every member of von Echlau’s incoming unit must die. Epic in resonance, yet heartbreakingly intimate, Beyond the Edge of Light is a haunting debut novel of conflicting allegiances, the nature of honour, and the unbearable cost of loyalty in a world on fire.

This book stresses the interrelatedness of knowledge by extricating models that cut across traditional disciplinary boundaries. For example, science can find models from the technology and semantic field of music, music can find its models from the technology and semantic field of science, and each domain may be guided by a philosophical or metaphysical principle - thus, the title of the book. But the book itself is structured as a mirror image of its title. Chapters 1-6 provide instances of the role of music in such domains as epistemology and logic, as well as in the early modern sciences of developmental biology, continuum mechanics, anatomy and physiological psychology, whereas Chapters 7-10 provide instances of what some other domains of knowledge have given back to the philosophy and theory of music.
