Teachers' College Press

Content standards have become the central focus of instruction in almost every classroom across the country. This timely book addresses the critical need for a process of instructional design that allows K - 12 teachers to maintain their creativity within the increasing pressures of external accountability. Providing practical tools, the ""Strategic Design"" process empowers teachers to examine state content standards, design effective classroom assessments, and deliver engaging instructional strategies. Drawing on the work of Wiggins and McTighe, this book offers a fresh perspective on the backward design process by expanding on their theories of instructional design, as well as those of Richard Stiggins.

As the sport business continues to evolve, so too, does Sport Finance and Management. The first version of this book took an in-depth look at changes in the sport industry, including interconnecting financial issues between teams and their associated businesses, the nature of fan loyalty influences, and the impact of sponsorship on team revenues. This second edition updates each of these elements, introduces relevant case study examples in new chapters, and examines the impact of changes in facility design, media opportunities, and league and conference policies on the economic success of teams, the salaries earned by professional players, and the finances of collegiate athletics.

The sports business landscape has changed dramatically in the past two decades. Teams and facilities have become integral parts of the businesses of real estate and development, entertainment, and the media. While an understanding of core financial management issues specific to the sports industry is still mandatory, a greater appreciation of financial and management issues that link teams to the dynamic forces that make it possible to listen or to watch games at home, on the road, or anywhere a fan happens to be is also needed.Sports Finance and Management: Real Estate, Entertainment, and the Remaking of the Business takes an in-depth look at the changes in the sports industry, including the interconnecting financial issues that occur when a sports team becomes a part of bigger companies, the altered nature of fan loyalty influenced by network and Internet footprint, dramatic changes in sports venues driven by the trend for single-purpose stadiums, and league policies such as revenue sharing, luxury taxes, and salary caps. The authors have deliberately not chosen sports examples to teach general finanancial and management concepts. Rather, they use basic financial and management concepts to illsutrate the differences and uniqueness of the sports industry. This gives students tackling finance issues for the first time a firm foundation, while allowing those more expert in financial issus to apply their skills and knowledge to the issues specific to the sports industry.Capturing the issues that make the sports industry different from any other, the text examines the effects of public financing, unique pricing structures, and roster depreciation allowances. It includes a detailed treatment of risk measurement based on the monetary value placed on championship wins and the influence fixed rosters have on the investment horizon. These features and more give students the foundation needed to understand finance and management as well as the idiosyncrasies of the sports industry.

Intimate Violence

Winner of the Bronislaw Malinowski Award in the Social Sciences Why do pogroms occur in some localities and not in others? Jeffrey S. Kopstein and Jason Wittenberg examine a particularly brutal wave of violence that occurred across hundreds of predominantly Polish and Ukrainian communities in the aftermath of the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union. The authors note that while some communities erupted in anti-Jewish violence, most others remained quiescent. In fact, fewer than 10 percent of communities saw pogroms in 1941, and most ordinary gentiles never attacked Jews. Intimate Violence is a novel social-scientific explanation of ethnic violence and the Holocaust. It locates the roots of violence in efforts to maintain Polish and Ukrainian dominance rather than in anti-Semitic hatred or revenge for communism. In doing so, it cuts through painful debates about relative victimhood that are driven more by metaphysical beliefs in Jewish culpability than empirical evidence of perpetrators and victims. Pogroms, they conclude, were difficult to start, and local conditions in most places prevented their outbreak despite a general anti-Semitism and the collapse of the central state. Kopstein and Wittenberg shed new light on the sources of mass ethnic violence and the ways in which such gruesome acts might be avoided.

This book addresses manifestations and consequences of the concept of the Self from Nativism. Taking an historical perspective, an attempt is made to offer a dynamic systems perspective, and to describe an alternative utilising examples from: Social Darwinism, genetics, fetal development, brain plasticity, and the education system, to the international human rights movement. Doing this the authors call into question the goal of respecting all values and behaviours in a given society. Arguing against moral relativism the authors propose the necessity for foundational values - that arguably already govern Community Psychology.

A Dream Defaulted explores how the student loan crisis disproportionately affects Black borrowers and why rising student debt is both a cause and consequence of social inequality in the United States.Jason N. Houle and Fenaba R. Addo offer a deft analysis of the growing financial crisis in education, examining its sources and its impacts. Based on more than five years of ongoing qualitative and quantitative research, this incisive work illustrates how the student loan system has not benefited all students equally. The authors tell the story of how first-generation college students, low-income students, and students of color are disadvantaged in two opposing phases of the process: debt accumulation and debt repayment. They further demonstrate that policies intended to mitigate financial burden and prevent default have failed to assist the people who most need help.Houle and Addo present these social and racial disparities within a broader context, tracing how centuries of institutionalized racism have contributed to social and economic inequities, perpetuating the racial wealth gap and leading to intergenerational inequality. Through interviews with borrowers, they illuminate the ways in which racial disparities affect who has college access, how and why people take on debt, and who has the ability to repay student loan debt after leaving college.Recognizing that the affordability crisis cannot be solved by higher education reform alone, Houle and Addo consider solutions. They argue that policy must extend beyond debt reduction and financial aid to address entrenched patterns of racial inequality and racial discrimination, both inside and outside institutions of higher education.
