Jean-Luc Nancy and Christian Thought

Jean-Luc Nancy and Christian Thought

Christina Smerick

Lexington Books

Jean-Luc Nancy and Christian Thought explores Nancy’s deconstruction of Christianity via the various bodies of Christ that accumulate in Christian doctrine, specifically the incarnated body, the resurrected body, and the body of Christ the church. The work ties Nancy’s deconstruction to the writings of the early church, demonstrating that the seeds of auto-deconstruction are indeed sown in the doctrines of Western Christianity. It then provides brief sketches of current theological works that touch upon similar deconstructive themes. Thus, the work aims to flesh out Nancy’s deconstruction for the non-theologian, tying his complex scans of Christian thought to early patristics, and also aims to help theologians unfamiliar with deconstruction or with Nancy’s work recognize the value of the deconstructive method for unpacking Christian doctrine and practice. This book will be of interest to philosophers of religion, hermeneutics, and post-Frankfort School critical theory, and theologians interested in current French philosophy of religion.

Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712 - 1778) was a Genevan philosopher of the 18th century. His political philosophy influenced the French Revolution as well as the overall development of modern political, sociological, and educational thought. Rousseau's novel mile, or On Education is a treatise on the education of the whole person for citizenship. His sentimental novel Julie, or the New Heloise was of importance to the development of pre-romanticism and romanticism in fiction. Rousseau's autobiographical writings - his Confessions, which initiated the modern autobiography, and his Reveries of a Solitary Walker - exemplified the late 18th-century movement known as the Age of Sensibility, and featured an increased focus on subjectivity and introspection that later characterized modern writing. His Discourse on the Origin of Inequality and his On the Social Contract are cornerstones in modern political and social thought. He argued that private property was conventional and the beginning of true civil society. In this book: The Social Contract & Discourses The Confessions of J. J. Rousseau, Complete mile or, Concerning Education; Extracts

Combining a broad overview of Jean-Jacques Lebel’s coming-of-age among Surrealists and his rupture with the movement, Laurel Jean Fredrickson focuses on two landmark happenings in this book: the first, “Funeral of the Thing of Tinguely” (1960), and the most scandalous, “120 Minutes dedicated to the Divine Marquis” (1966). This study illustrates the development and significance of French happenings in relation to cultural and political changes of the 1960s.Research in Lebel’s archives, and others like the Archives nationale d’outre-mer are indispensable in the telling of this extraordinary historical and theoretical narrative. It illuminates sensitive, often veiled dimensions of postwar French society, from torture during the Algerian War, to government censorship, to the sexual politics of nudity in art. This volume shows how Lebel synthesized the lessons of Dada and surrealism and 1960s experimentalism, electrified by political radicalism, to participate in shaping the erotics and forms of revolution in May 1968.

One of the most prolific and influential artists of the 20th century, Jean Dubuffet has featured in a multitude of exhibitions and catalogues. Yet his work remains some of the most misunderstood—and least interrogated—post-war French art. In Jean Dubuffet, Bricoleur: Portraits, Pastiche, Performativity, Stephanie Chadwick re-examines his portraits (a veritable who’s who of the Parisian art and intellectual scene) through the lens of his writings and in tandem with the art and literature of his Surrealist sitters.Dubuffet, while posing as an outsider himself, mingled with many great artists and theorists. He also celebrated Art Brut (the art of ostensible outsiders), developing an elaborate and nuanced stream of conceptual resources to reconfigure painting and reframe post-war anticultural discourses. This book investigates Dubuffet’s painting as bricolage, uncovering his reliance on a culture of anticulture and the appropriation of motifs from Surrealism to the South Pacific, to explore themes of multivalence, performativity, and multifaceted identity in his portraits.
