Radio frequency identification or RFID is a broad-based technology that impacts business and society. With the rapid expansion of the use of this technology in everything from consumer purchases to security ID tags, to tracking bird migration, there is very little information available in book form that targets the widest range of the potential market. But this book is different! Where most of the books available cover specific technical underpinnings of RFID or specific segments of the market, this co-authored book by both academic and industry professionals, provides a broad background on the technology and the various applications of RFID around the world. Coverage is mainly non-technical, more business related for the broadest user base, however there are sections that step into the technical aspects for advanced, more technical readers.

What Do International Students Think and Feel?

What Do International Students Think and Feel?

Jerry G. Gebhard

The University of Michigan Press
2010
nidottu
What Do International Students Think and Feel? seeks to illuminate the lives of international students at colleges and universities in the United States. The book is designed to increase awareness about the process of adjusting to another culture, particularly in a short period of time. Based on more than two decades of research into this process by international students in U.S. university language institutes and undergraduate and graduate programs, this book features a rich and diverse assortment of personal narratives by students representing countries all over the world. The research also revealed the strategies that students report they have used to navigate within a new culture; international students share their successes and their failures in this regard. In addition, they also share their experiences once they return to their homeland and re-adjust to life there, including what they have learned about themselves and their own values that relate to culture. What Do International Students Think and Feel? will make an excellent supplement to several courses with an M.A. TESOL program—methods, introduction to culture/intercultural communication, or the practicum.

Up North in Michigan: A Portrait of Place in Four Seasons

Up North in Michigan: A Portrait of Place in Four Seasons

Jerry Dennis

University of Michigan Regional
2025
nidottu
Northern Michigan is a place, like all places, in change. Over the past half century, its landscape has been bulldozed, subdivided, and built upon. Climate change warms the water of the Great Lakes at an alarming rate--Lake Superior is now the fastest-warming large body of freshwater on the planet--creating increasingly frequent and severe storm events, altering aquatic and shoreline ecosystems, and contributing to further invasions by non-native plants and animals. And yet the essence of this region, known to many as simply "Up North," has proved remarkably perennial. Millions of acres of state and national forests and other public lands remain intact. Small towns peppered across the rural countryside have changed little over the decades, pushing back the machinery of progress with the help of dedicated land conservancies, conservation organizations, and other advocacy groups. Up North in Michigan, the new collection from celebrated nature writer Jerry Dennis, captures its author's lifelong journey to better know this place he calls home by exploring it in every season, in every kind of weather, on foot, on bicycle, in canoes and cars. The essays in this book are more than an homage to a particular region, its people, and its natural wonders. They are a reflection on the Up North that can only be experienced through your feet and fingertips, through your ears, mouth, and nose--the Up North that makes its way into your bones as surely as sand makes its way into wood grain. The paperback contains a new chapter by Jerry Dennis that has been written since the publication of the hardcover.
The Michigan Gardening Guide

The Michigan Gardening Guide

Jerry Minnich

The University of Michigan Press
1998
nidottu
It's all here---step-by-step guidance for gardening success in Michigan's varying soil types and often difficult climate. Veteran garden writer Jerry Minnich presents detailed directions and practical tips for growing vegetables, herbs, flowers, landscaping plants, and house plants, as well as dependable advice on hundreds of garden operations.Minnich begins where gardening begins---in the soil---as he tells how to build a healthy and productive soil, and how to solve soil problems. In subsequent chapters he reveals composting and mulching techniques, and what to do when the weather is less than congenial for gardens. Minnich describes more than sixty Michigan vegetables, tells how to grow them, and lists recommended varieties for each. There are also chapters on growing fruits, berries, and nuts, and on food storage. Minnich devotes a chapter to growing annuals and perennials, another on lawns, trees, and ornamental woody plants. He tells how to deal with insect and animal pests without using harmful chemicals, and he includes a major section on houseplants.Throughout, Minnich approaches the subject with experience, wit, and style. Readers will learn how to deal with weeds in the lawn, how to surf the landscape for com-posting materials, and how to grow mulch at home. He explains intercropping, companion planting, seed saving, cover cropping, strip composting and other techniques. He tells how to raise unusual crops such as tomatillos and radicchio, as well as the standard favorites. He explains how the science of phenology can help the gardener, how to take a soil test, how to use earthworms to turn household wastes in to compost, and how to attract birds and toads to the garden. And he lists more than a thousand varieties of vegetables, herbs, fruits, and ornamentals that can be trusted to grow in the Michigan climate. The Michigan Gardening Guide is the one backyard guide that Michigan gardeners can trust. It is a tool as indispensable as the hoe and the shovel.Jerry Minnich has written about gardening for more than twenty years and has been commended with a Certificate of Merit by the Garden Writers Association of America. His interest in gardening began when he joined the staff of Organic Gardening in the 1950s.
Insuring Inequality

Insuring Inequality

Jerry R. Cates

The University of Michigan Press

sidottu
The establishment of the Social Security Board in 1935 confronted administrators and policy makers with basic value decisions. Should the system serve to raise the incomes of America's neediest citizens? Or did that aim smack too much of the ideology of redistribution of wealth? Would it rob workers of incentives to provide for their own futures and reward idleness? The conflict of values was played out on a political stage marked by infighting, deception, and short-sighted compromise. The result is the social security system we know today—one that benefits those who need it least, and one that is in a perpetual state of financial difficulty.Insuring Inequality is a penetrating analysis and indictment of that bureaucracy which felt the welfare of America's aged was an acceptable price to pay for the preservation of an ideologically correct social insurance system—a system that would not seriously challenge income inequality in America. Previously unresearched documents not only reveal that social insurance discriminates against the poor and this was a foreseen, intended consequence; but they also reveal that the leaders predicted a financially troubled system and did little to prevent it.

JERRY FITCH has been fortunate to have lived during a very exciting era in boxing history. He has watched fights ringside as a fan, as a reporter for many major boxing publications and also on live television and closed circuit. In addition some of his favorite fights written about here involve battles that took place long before the author was born. Viewing these pieces of boxing history on film and video provided him with a historic insight into boxing history and the men who made it.MY FAVORITE FIGHTS is just a small capsule of the countless fights Jerry has enjoyed over sixty years of watching boxing. The book is meant to not only remember these favorite fights but to provide insight leading up to them and the impact that occurred after them. Jerry gives his opinion of the fights from not only a writer's perspective but also from that of a fan. In addition, Jerry met many of the fighters involved in these encounters, even became friends with several of them. Jersey Joe Walcott, Joe Louis, Billy Conn, Roberto Duran, Bobby Chacon, Carlos Palomino, Lloyd Marshall, Bob Foster and Larry Holmes are just some of the giants of boxing recalled here. The first book to explore from an archaeological perspective the incredible and improbable history of our relationship with cats, from fearsome foe to purring pet. Feared, revered and respected, cats have left an indelible pawprint on the histories and civilizations of humankind. In Britain a third of all households have a cat, as of 2021, some 45 million American households owned one or more cats, making them one of the most popular pets in the world. Over the last two million years, cats and people have interacted in diverse and unexpected ways, but the predecessors of your furry friend were predators, not pets. Here, for the first time, the path from deadly enemy to improbable roommate is set out through an archaeological lens by Professor of Anthropology Jerry Moore. Starting with the terrifying prehistorical scimitar-toothed cat of the Pliocene and the lion drawings of the Palaeolithic Chauvet caves, Moore journeys through our complicated history with these charismatic creatures. He travels along the Nile and across the Mediterranean, sailing on to South America, exploring pet cemeteries, cat mummies and exquisite statuary across continents and centuries. However, our attempts to bring cats in from the cold have not always had happy endings, as Moore explores through such famous feline fanciers as Joe Exotic, Siegfried Fischbacher and Roy Horn. Combining incredible archaeological finds with contemporary media, Cat Tales surveys ancient and modern interactions between humans and cats, wild and domestic, to ask a simple but profound question: who domesticated whom?
