County Teacher Training Schools for Negroes, published in 1913 by the John F. Slater Fund, offers a fascinating glimpse into the efforts to improve educational opportunities for African Americans in the rural South. This historical document details the establishment and operation of teacher training schools specifically designed to prepare Black educators for teaching in county schools. The report highlights the curriculum, teaching methods, and overall impact of these schools on the communities they served. It provides valuable insights into the challenges and triumphs of providing quality education during a period of significant racial inequality. Researchers and historians interested in the history of American education, particularly the education of African Americans, will find this a compelling and informative resource. The evolution of business history offers some radical ways forward for a discipline which is rich in potential. This shortform book offers an expert overview of how the field has relevance for contemporary business studies as well as the social sciences more broadly, as well as practitioners interested in historical perspectives. This book not only provides a comprehensive review of how the discipline of business history has evolved over the last century, but it also lays out an agenda for the next decade. Focusing specifically on the ‘three pillars’ of research, teaching and practical impact, the authors have outlined how while the first has flourished across many continents, the latter two are struggling to overcome significant challenges associated with how the discipline is perceived, especially in the social sciences. A solution is proposed that would involve academics working more closely with practitioners, thereby increasing the discipline’s credibility across key stakeholders. The work here presented provides a concise and easily digestible overview of the topic which will be of interest to scholars, researchers and advanced students focusing on the evolution of business history and its impact on the way the world conducts business today.
First Published in 1983, Syria: Modern State in an Ancient Land presents a concise profile of Syria in which the author depicts the factors that shaped modern Syria, introducing its land, people, and culture and explaining how it moved from being the coup - prone cockpit of inter-Arab politics to the relative stability in the 1980s. He discusses how its political system functions, the development of its moderate socialist economy, the nation's external affairs (particularly within the Middle East), and issues for the future-the last of particular interest because Syria is in a process of change in its politics, society, and international relationships. Throughout he provides a framework within which to understand and assess the developments in Syria in the 1980s. This is a must read for students of Middle East studies and Middle East history.

This book profiles Taiwan’s six key presidents—Chiang Kai-shek, Chiang Ching-kuo, Lee Teng-hui, Chen Shui-bian, Ma Ying-jeou, and Tsai Ing-wen—focusing on politics, economics, elections, successes and failures in office, popularity, and democratization.By analyzing criteria of the six presidents’ leadership, such as management of crises, advancing democracy, stewardship of the economy, charisma, corruption, and handling of foreign relations, especially with China and the U.S., John F. Copper goes on to rank the presidents and predicts trends and difficulties that future presidents will face. Special attention is paid to relations with the U.S., acknowledging the U.S. as Taiwan’s political and economic model as well as its being Taiwan’s protector in the context of China’s claim to Taiwan. As an assessment of these six political leaders as well as a study of Taiwan’s political system, this book will appeal to students and scholars of Taiwan, political science, and international relations.

Railroad bridges are a critical component of the infrastructure and economy of many countries, and many of these bridges are nearing the end of their useful service life. Theory and Design of Railway Truss Bridges provides comprehensive coupled information regarding the structural analysis and design of steel railway truss spans. Most books cover either analysis or design of structures, but none cover both the analysis and design of railway trusses. Further, the book presents technical information on the analysis of railway trusses currently unavailable in other modern books. It also provides readers with up-to-date information concerning the modern methods of design recommended by the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA): Includes detailed information on the analysis of trusses for moving loads.Presents information on topics specific to railway trusses such as loading effects, secondary stresses and stress reversal.Includes information on the history of railway truss analysis, design and construction.Covers methods for the analysis of statically indeterminate spans.Describes methods to determine the displacement of truss spans.Provides up-to-date theory and design methods based on current AREMA recommendations.
