Computer Graphics: Theory and Practice provides a complete and integrated introduction to this area. The book only requires basic knowledge of calculus and linear algebra, making it an accessible introductory text for students. It focuses on conceptual aspects of computer graphics, covering fundamental mathematical theories and models and the inherent problems in implementing them. In so doing, the book introduces readers to the core challenges of the field and provides suggestions for further reading and studying on various topics. For each conceptual problem described, solution strategies are compared and presented in algorithmic form. This book, along with its companion Design and Implementation of 3D Graphics Systems, gives readers a full understanding of the principles and practices of implementing 3D graphics systems.

With this book, Jonas Kuhn greatly advances optimality theory (OT) by clarifying the significant choices in the design of a formally precise OT approach to syntax. Building on OT work that uses the representation structures of lexical functional grammar (OT-LFG), Kuhn defines the notion of an OT-syntactic grammar in a declarative, non-derivational way. Along with the standard OT architecture, which is based on a generation metaphor, Kuhn also formalizes parsing-based OT, and goes on to discuss possible combinations of these two architectures. This is followed by an examination of assumptions under which the computational tasks of generation and parsing are decidable for an OT-syntactic grammar.

The fundamental guide for police commanders on using crime analysis to lead effectively.Effective, actionable crime analysis can empower modern law enforcement agencies, and their commanders, to promote public safety. But how do police commanders use this information to lead their agency strategically? Leading with Data: A Police Commander’s Guide to GIS & Crime Analysis shows how to take a geographical approach to analyzing and utilizing police data, allowing commanders to make more efficient and effective decisions. A strong crime analysis and mapping platform can help commanders sift through large amounts of data and other information to discover what matters most in relation to the agency’s operational priorities as well as those voiced by local communities. This book covers how to: Use crime analysis and GIS to provide substantial insight into the causes of a given problem and design the best possible strategies for collaboration and positive outcomes Utilize crime analysts in a productive and impactful way Successfully implement GIS and crime analysis into practice on the job Support crime analysis in an organization Written to be immediately useful for police commanders, whether new to crime analysis or having direct experience in the matter, Leading with Data is a practical reference guide and provides both introductory and complex topics. The primary goals of this book are to expose law enforcement command staff to basic elements and concepts of GIS and crime analysis, and to then build on that exposure by encouraging the ongoing use of the different types of analysis for day-to-day operations as well as other needs, such as strategic planning, crime accountability meetings, or public outreach. Today’s policing requires that commanders know how to use crime analysis and data-driven strategies effectively for problem-solving purposes – and this book shows the way.
The Helicopter Heist: A Novel Based on True Events
NOW A NETFLIX MINISERIES: Ocean's Eleven meets Heat in this Swedish crime thriller inspired by "one of the most spectacular heists of all time" (Time). "Bonnier's novel is a rapturous account of . . . a true crime so wildly far-fetched it seems the stuff of fiction." --Jake Gyllenhaal Sami has a new child to provide for, so after years of petty crime, he's training as a chef. But when a business deal suddenly goes sideways, Sami is left wondering how he'll ever provide for his newborn daughter. Michel and his family fled a bloody civil war in Lebanon, and he grew up in the suburbs of Stockholm surrounded by poverty and criminals. He's trying to turn over a new leaf, but the past just won't let him go. Niklas has traveled the world and made an effort to become the sort of person people talked about. He followed through on his vision...and no good has come of it. Zoran is a businessman who knows everyone and seals a deal with a handshake. When he was young, the ambitious Yugoslavian had a dream--to get rich, by whatever means necessary. And Alexandra? She's the reason that the four men found themselves plotting to rob a Stockholm cash depot in September 2009. At first, the plan seems foolproof. Every contingency is covered, and the payoff will make them all rich for life. No one would even get hurt. But not everyone is who they seem. Even as the gang's stolen helicopter is lifting off from the cash depot with $6.5 million inside, questions remain unanswered. What secrets does each man hold?

Pro JSF and Ajax shows you how to leverage the full potential of JavaServer Faces (JSF) and Ajax. This is not an entry-level tutorial, but a book about building Ajax-enabled JSF components for sophisticated, enterprise-level rich Internet applications. Written by JSF experts and verified by established community figures including Adam Winer (member of the JSF Expert Group, Java Champion), Kito D. Mann (JSFCentral.com and JSF in Action), and Matthias Weßendorf (MyFaces), this JSF 5-compatible book provides reliable and groundbreaking JSF components to help you exploit the power of JSF in your Java web applications. This book provides a blueprint for building custom JSF user interface components and shows how to leverage the best browser technologies, such as Ajax, Mozilla XUL and Microsoft HTC, to deliver rich Internet applications. This book covers standard best practices for behavioral and renderer-specific component classes, renderers, events and event listeners, and JSP tag handlers for each. It also covers advanced techniques such as dynamic content type negotiation, JAR-based resource delivery, and dynamic render kit selection. Foreword "Does the world really and truly need another JavaServer Faces book? I was fairly well convinced the answer could only be a resounding 'no!' After all, there's a good half dozen books out in stores today, by a whole host of web luminaries, and I've even personally helped as a technical reviewer on half of those. So what more could really be said on the subject? But when I thought about this a bit more, it became clear that all of these books only go so far. They'll show you how to use what JSF gives you out of the box, throw you a bone for writing your own components and renderers, maybe even a bit more. But none that I've seen get to the heart of why JSF is really and truly cool and important technology;they make JSF look like YAMVCF (Yet Another Model-View-Controller Framework) for HTML—more powerful here and there, easier to use in many places, a bit harder to use in others, but really nothing major. And certainly nothing that takes us beyond the dull basics of building ordinary-looking web applications. This book goes a lot further. It'll cover the basics, of course, and show you how to build components, but then it keeps going: on to AJAX, on to HTC, on to XUL—and how you can wrap this alphabet soup up underneath the heart of JSF, its component model, and how you can leverage it to finally develop web applications that don't need radical re-architecting every time the winds of client technologies blow in a different direction. Along the way, you'll learn a wide array of open source toolkits that make web magic practical even when you're not a Javascript guru. So, heck, I'm convinced. The world does need another JSF book." —Adam Winer, Architect, ADF Faces, JSF Expert Group Member, and Java Champion. (From the Foreword)

Glass in the common sense refers to soda-lime glass, or any similar substance: a hard, brittle, transparent solid made by fusing soda with lime and cooling rapidly. In the technical sense, glass is any amorphous solid, i.e., any non-crystalline solid. Usually, glass is formed by quenching a glass-forming liquid (or melt) through its glass transition temperature sufficiently quickly that a regular crystal lattice cannot form. Most glasses contain silica as their main component and glass former. In the scientific sense the term glass is often extended to all amorphous solids (and melts that easily form amorphous solids), including plastics, resins, or other silica-free amorphous solids. However, glass science commonly includes only inorganic amorphous solids, while plastics and similar organics are covered by polymer science, biology and further scientific disciplines. This book presents the latest research in this field from around the world.

Ice sheets as vast accumulations of frozen water on land are a direct expression of energy distribution on our planet. They form from the interplay of intensive accumulation of frozen water and insufficient melt during the summer. They define global sea-level and affect the geochemical composition of the ocean. This book presents current research in the study of the dynamics, formation and environmental concerns relating to ice sheets.
