Artificial Intelligence and the Environmental Crisis
A radical and challenging book which argues that artificial intelligence needs a completely different set of foundations, based on ecological intelligence rather than human intelligence, if it is to deliver on the promise of a better world. This can usher in the greatest transformation in human history, an age of re-integration. Our very existence is dependent upon our context within the Earth System, and so, surely, artificial intelligence must also be grounded within this context, embracing emergence, interconnectedness and real-time feedback. We discover many positive outcomes across the societal, economic and environmental arenas and discuss how this transformation can be delivered.Key Features:Identifies a key weakness in current AI thinking, that threatens any hope of a better world.Highlights the importance of realizing that systems theory is an essential foundation for any technology that hopes to positively transform our world.Emphasizes the need for a radical new approach to AI, based on ecological systems.Explains why ecosystem intelligence, not human intelligence, offers the best framework for AI.Examines how this new approach will impact on the three arenas of society, environment and economics, ushering in a new age of re-integration.

This book is about the strategic importance of NATO-Europe and why Western Europe should continue to remain the primary geographic area of importance in U.S. national security planning. It argues that making fundamental changes in U.S. security commitment to Europe would not be in U.S. interests.
Modern Greece

Modern Greece

This clear, balanced book explores the dilemma of Greece, the font of European civilization. Despite its classical past and EU membership, Greece has been unable to escape the limbo of being nearly developed. Illuminating the impact of borrowed western institutions on Greeces traditional culture, the authors analyze the paralyzing consequences: a political process dependent on personal relations and a civil society dominated by a highly centralized bureaucracy. State dominance, Legg and Roberts argue, has turned politics primarily into a struggle for office. This emphasis on political conflict has allowed politicians and their supporters to employ emotional nationalist rhetoric to flout democratic rules and to avoid genuine issues. Concluding that the Greek political systems nature precludes real reform, the authors show how EU opportunities for both economic and political reform have been largely lost. Unfortunately, the aspects of Greeces nearly developed status are mirrored in eastern European states with similar pasts. Indeed, the authors warn that the Greece of today may be the future of many of its neighbors. }This clear, balanced book explores the dilemma of Greece, the font of European civilization. nbspWhile thematically arranged, this text follows a broadly chronological account of Swifts life to show his development as a writer from the prolific and inventive iconoclast to the mature satirist. It considers his engagement with the corruption of over-secure politicians and his opposition to the easy rationalism of free-thinking pundits. Gullivers Travels is shown to be a coherent critique of eighteenth-century ideas of science, education and politics. Keith Crook also discusses a wide range of Swifts other works, including his early satires, his political writings, his poems and his letters.

A Short History of Geomorphology

A Short History of Geomorphology

Keith J. Tinkler

Routledge
2020
sidottu
This book, first published in 1985, is a comprehensive guide to the main ideas in the history of geomorphology. It traces the development of thinking on landforms, with material ranging from the ancient world to the present day. The main areas covered are the Renaissance, the explosive growth of the Natural Sciences in the nineteenth century and the impact of the Second World War. The papers and theories of specialists like James Hutton, John Playfair and W.M. Davies are presented and discussed and the final chapters reflect on future change, based on the past and speculation on possible developments. Balance is maintained between the dual importance and dominance of English and North American contributions to the subject, and quite substantial research was undertaken to provide a more complete approach to some areas hitherto neglected.

Venture Capital Performance

Venture Capital Performance

European venture capital (VC) funds have historically underperformed their US counterparts. This has resulted in reduced investment into European VC by the traditional institutional investors. This book investigates the factors that give rise to the performance difference. It is based on the author’s research at the Adam Smith Business School, University of Glasgow which involved a qualitative study of some 64 VC firms in the UK, continental Europe and the US, supplemented by 40 interviews with other stakeholders, including limited partner investors, corporate venturers, entrepreneurs and advisors.Readers will gain an in-depth understanding of the various structural, operational and wider environmental factors that impact on the performance difference between UK/European and US VC funds. The study is unique in that it provides, for the first time, a holistic and extensive analysis of the entire investment process from sourcing deals to exiting deals specifically contrasting Europe and the US in terms of the variables pertaining to the investment process and the impact on the fund performance. Factors impacting on the performance differential are structural, resulting from characteristics of the funds themselves, operational such as the investment practices of the VC firms which manage the funds and environmental such as culture and attitude to risk and the wider ecosystem in which the funds operate. These factors are set out clearly for the reader. The characteristics of the better performing funds in Europe and the US are also investigated. The book is aimed at academics who are researching venture capital fund performance and investment practices and also at practitioners, advisors and policymakers who want to learn about best VC investment practices. Whilst the book is focused on European and US VC investing, the best practices are also pertinent for VC firms and funds setting up in other geographies, particularly in emerging markets. To this end, best practice guidelines based on the research are included.
Financial Communication

Financial Communication

This essential guide to financial communication provides a concise critical overview of this increasingly important field. It challenges existing assumptions about the role and significance of financial public relations (PR) and investor relations, and the dominant paradigm of shareholder value. This book explores how the dominant paradigm in financial PR is based on the methodologically and historically incorrect assumption of symmetrical communication.Highlighting the importance of financial communications in the corporate hierarchy where it is often a direct function of the Finance Director, this book critically assesses its ideological role in normalising the idea and role of ‘the market’ and promotes the neoliberal view that the sole function of the public company is to increase shareholder value. It opens up new theoretical perspectives by considering retail investor behaviour from the perspective of fandom theory through the behaviour of investors during financial booms, busts and bubbles. This volume will be of interest to researchers in the fields of PR, financial communication, accounting and financial management as well as practitioners working in financial PR and investor relations.
The Dynamics of Discrete Populations and Series of Events

The Dynamics of Discrete Populations and Series of Events

Discrete phenomena are an important aspect of various complex systems, acting both as underlying driving mechanisms and as manifestations of diverse behaviours. However, the characterisation of these discrete phenomena requires models that go beyond those featured in existing books. Largely concerned with mathematical models used to describe time-varying populations and series of events, The Dynamics of Discrete Populations and Series of Events demonstrates how analytical tools are used to develop, simulate, and solve discrete stochastic models. It provides an understanding of the effect of the competing processes governing the changing number of individuals present in a population, and shows how relatively simple models can be used to generate a wide range of behaviours.
Information Assurance Architecture

Information Assurance Architecture

Now that information has become the lifeblood of your organization, you must be especially vigilant about assuring it. The hacker, spy, or cyber-thief of today can breach any barrier if it remains unchanged long enough or has even the tiniest leak. In Information Assurance Architecture, Keith D. Willett draws on his over 25 years of technical, security, and business experience to provide a framework for organizations to align information assurance with the enterprise and their overall mission. The Tools to Protect Your Secrets from ExposureThis work provides the security industry with the know-how to create a formal information assurance architecture that complements an enterprise architecture, systems engineering, and the enterprise life cycle management (ELCM). Information Assurance Architecture consists of a framework, a process, and many supporting tools, templates and methodologies. The framework provides a reference model for the consideration of security in many contexts and from various perspectives; the process provides direction on how to apply that framework. Mr. Willett teaches readers how to identify and use the right tools for the right job. Furthermore, he demonstrates a disciplined approach in thinking about, planning, implementing and managing security, emphasizing that solid solutions can be made impenetrable when they are seamlessly integrated with the whole of an enterprise.Understand the Enterprise ContextThis book covers many information assurance subjects, including disaster recovery and firewalls. The objective is to present security services and security mechanisms in the context of information assurance architecture, and in an enterprise context of managing business risk. Anyone who utilizes the concepts taught in these pages will find them to be a valuable weapon in the arsenal of information protection.

Agricultural Safety

Agricultural Safety

Lack of accidents does not necessarily mean safe operation. You may have been lucky. You may have had near misses, but fortune smiled and you had few accidents. Measuring accidents provides one segment of the safety picture, but it is a far cry from evaluating and creating overall safety. Rather than giving you accident statistics and the admonition "you need a program," Agricultural Safety shows you how to "do" safety. The book sets forth the steps you need to take to make safety a part of your everyday farming operation, such as: - Identification of key safety activities that will lead to better control of losses - Setting standards and guidelines for doing that work - Measurement of the effectiveness of the work being done in accordance with the standards and guidelines - Evaluating program progress based upon measurements taken - Correcting deficiencies based on the evaluation(s) The author covers topics such as machinery operation, maintenance and repair techniques, fire loss control techniques, the safe handling of agrochemicals, and techniques involving the handling of animals. He provides you with a step-by-step manual for the procurement, handling, and storage of agrochemicals and pesticides as well as a guide to personal protective equipment and reviews safety for "third parties" and the posting of property and public warnings. To achieve safety, the work of safety must be done, measured for efficiency, evaluated in real-world terms, and corrective action taken, as needed, in a timely manner. Many books on safety provide a list of dos and don'ts. Agricultural Safety discusses the ways and means of managing and controlling accidental loss and shows you how to build safety into your operation.
