The Lewis Carroll Puzzle Book: A Collection of Classic Conundrums
Step through the looking glass into a world where logic and imagination intertwine in the most curious ways. Illustrated with full-color imagery, this is the ultimate celebration of one of the most famous puzzle-makers of all time: Lewis Carroll. This expertly curated book collects the best puzzles written by the author of Alice's Adventure in Wonderland. Lewis Carroll was a mathematician who loved puzzles of all kinds, invented the word ladder, delighted in acrostics and riddles, and posed twisty math and logic questions in his two most famous works, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. Mind-bending and utterly charming, this celebratory collection of puzzles and games includes delights such as doublets (word ladders) and syzygies (a more elaborate form of the word ladder), mirror writing, arithmetical croquet, as well as some of the most delightfully puzzling riddles from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. Enough to keep even the most curious of minds entertained for hours. Plus, Brian Sibley, chairman of the Lewis Carroll Society, uses his expert knowledge to take readers inside the inimitable mind of Lewis Carroll, with a beautiful introduction and annotations throughout.

This first book-length story and study of philosopher, activist, inventor, and philanthropist Lewis Gompertz--co-founder of both the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (1824, ousted in 1832) and the Animals' Friend Society (1832-52)--charts his struggle against likely and unlikely enemies on behalf of other species, women, the poor, apprentices, prisoners, and slaves. Outraging fearful, elitist Christians, his classic Moral Inquiries on the Situation of Man and of Brutes (1824) reveals influences, tenets, and indeed his own situation in attempting to formulate and live by a rational morality for others' benefit, defying religious and structural forces that wanted far less. Power, class, philosophy, history, education, reform, and revolution all play their part in this account of his campaigning work and works (including Fragments in Defence of Animals and The Animals' Friend periodical), exposing the racist, sectarian rhetoric and scheming he endured at a defining moment. This attritional action, by which humane progress was obstructed and for more than a century fixed, is more disturbing than has been made widely detailed until now, in this much-needed, critical introduction.

The story centres on Alice, a young girl who falls asleep in a meadow and dreams that she follows a White Rabbit down a rabbit hole. She has many wondrous, often bizarre adventures with thoroughly illogical and very strange creatures. Often changing size unexpectedly (she grows as tall as a house and shrinks to three inches), Alice encounters such characters as the March Hare, the Cheshire Cat, the Duchess, the Mad Hatter, the Mock Turtle, and the Red Queen. Alice drinks potions and eats cakes and toadstools to change size, attends a bizarre endless teaparty, plays a game of croquet with an unmanageable flamingo for a croquet mallet and is a witness at the trial of the knave of hearts, where she risks the queen shouting "Off with her head ."

As Alice's Adventures in Wonderland celebrates its 150th birthday, Lewis Carroll remains one of Victorian culture's most prominent and compelling figures. Few readers, however, have had the chance to explore the extent of Carroll's passion for photography, a new technology that was gaining popularity during his lifetime. Lewis Carroll: Photography on the Move follows the journey of Carroll's photography in tandem with his writing.Beginning in the glass studio Carroll had built above his college rooms at Christ Church, Oxford, this book traces his fascination for photographs through his visits to London theatres, his annual trips to the seaside town of Eastbourne and hisextraordinary excursion to Russia in 1867. Many of the preoccupations that make Carroll's writing so remarkable are alsopresent in his photography, particularly his interest in the boundless imaginations of children. Carroll was also an avid collector of photographs and, on occasion, commissioned professional photographers to set up studio sittings. Photography, a medium for which Carroll is not primarily known, remained a lifelong attachment for him. This engaging and beautifully illustrated book reveals an unseen side of the renowned writer. It examines nineteenth-century visual and literary culture in accessible prose, giving a valuable and cogent account of Carroll's visual and literary career.

Bestselling author, pioneering photographer, mathematical don and writer of nonsense verse, Lewis Carroll remains a source of continuing fascination. Though many have sought to understand this complex man he remains for many an enigma. Now leading international authority, Edward Wakeling, offers his unique appraisal of the man born Charles Dodgson but whom the world knows best as Lewis Carroll, author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. This new biography of Carroll presents a fresh appraisal based upon his social circle. Contrary to the claims of many previous authors, Carroll's circle was not child centred: his correspondence was enormous, numbering almost 100,000 items at the time of his death, and included royalty and many of the leading artists, illustrators, publishers, academics, musicians and composers of the Victorian era. Edward Wakeling draws upon his personal database of nearly 6,000 letters, mostly never before published, to fill the gaps left by earlier biographies and resolve some of the key myths that surround Lewis Carroll, such as his friendships with children and his drug-taking. Meticulously researched and based upon a lifetime's study of the man and his work, this important new work will be essential reading for scholars and admirers of one of the key authors of the Victorian age.
