Based on unprecedented access to Ranger archives, Lone Star Lawmen chronicles one hundred years of high adventure as told by one of the nation's most respected Western historians. Highlighting the gradual evolution of this celebrated force, Robert M. Utley reveals how the outlaw-pursuing horseback riders of yesteryear became a modern law enforcement agency combating urban crime in Texas's big cities, assisted by the latest advances in forensic science. Modernization didn't mean losing their toughness and independent spirit, however, and Utley predicts how the Rangers will continue to bring justice to the West in the twenty-first century.

Good Husband, Great Marriage

Robert M Alter

Little, Brown Company
2007
pokkari
This book will appeal to the countless women who resent that their husbands never listen and that they have to nag in order to get them to do anything around the house; who feel like their husbands are always pawing at them to have sex and who want more from their marriage. It will appeal to men who want to have more sex, less nagging and wives who adore them. In short it's a hard-hitting, no-nonsense guidebook for men and women with a central, controversial argument: the man is primarily responsible for the marital problems. Alter says to women: "You are right to want what you want from him." He says to men: "Stop thinking it's your wife's fault, and transform yourself into the good husband you know you have in you." In 44 short chapters, he describes the problem areas men face and what actions they can take to fix them. Chapters include How to Know When You're Being a Man as Opposed to When You're Being an Asshole" · Alter's approach is straightforward and logical; he speaks to men in a language they understand. In addition, some of the book will be geared to women where Alter will give advice on what they can do.

nidottu
First published over 40 years ago, this was the first text on the identification of organic compounds using spectroscopy. This text presents a unified approach to the structure determination of organic compounds based largely on mass spectrometry, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, as well as multinuclear and multidimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The key strength of this text is the extensive set of practice and real-data problems (in Chapters 7 and 8). Even professional chemists use these spectra as reference data. Spectrometric Identification of Organic Compounds is written by and for organic chemists, and emphasizes the synergistic effect resulting from the interplay of spectra. This text is characterized by its problem-solving approach with numerous practice problems and extensive reference charts and tables.
Go For Growth!

Go For Growth!

Robert M. Tomasko

Issues a bold challenge to business managers to commit their companies to sustained measurable growth and enduring success. Noted business author and management consultant Robert M. Tomasko details five distinct paths that can take any company, large or small, to higher levels of productivity and prosperity. Important points are fully illustrated with examples drawn from a wide variety of companies in a broad range of markets. Using a dynamic "people-centered" approach, he shows how to match these paths or game plans with the specific characteristics of your business and its key employees. These five paths include: *Breaking the Rules: Destabilizing an industry to create new markets describes how to expand your business by violating rules or standards that are obsolete or so entrenched that no one questions them anymore, leaving the market wide open to astute individuals who can spot the telltale signs. Go for Growth tells how to identify these markets and how to seize the initiative, along the lines of Silicon Graphics and Southwest Airlines. *Playing the Game: Excel by satisfying existing needs in growing markets explains the inherent strengths and weaknesses of market-driven companies that succeed by knowing and serving an existing market better than anyone else. Go for Growth tells you when and how to apply this game plan so effectively used by Marriott, PepsiCo, and Procter & Gamble. *Making the Rules: Dominate the market by controlling its standards describes the strategies of the handful of companies that have managed to control, through research, market share, and product positioning, the markets in which they compete. This is the path of Disney, Intel, and Microsoft. *Specializing: Thrive in niche markets details the ways companies such as Nordic Track, Rolex, and Union Carbide can seal off a portion of a market from other competitors by focusing on meeting very specific needs. Go for Growth shows the ways specialization can restore growth to companies undergoing wrenching change. *Improvising: Profit from change by rolling with the punches describes the role of improvising as a growth path when no other good choices are available, and explains the numerous ways improvisers like IBM, Kodak, and many regional phone companies can capitalize on their flexibility to achieve profitability. *Go for Growth drives home the point that there is no single best approach to growth for everyone by including lively, first-person accounts from managers thriving, and stumbling, in businesses following each path. Go for Growth fully demonstrates the opportunities awaiting businesses that can successfully follow the right path for their markets and capabilities. In addition, this invaluable book explores ways managers can help focus their entire organizations on sustaining growth and increasing profitability well into the future. With its combination of stimulating ideas and specific action plans, Go for Growth offers forward-looking managers five unique paths toward business and personal growth. The author of the best-selling Rethinking the Corporation shows how companies of any size can achieve new growth and greater success Five Paths to Profit and Success—Choose the Right One for You and Your Company Go for Growth challenges business leaders to move their organizations toward sustainable growth and enduring prosperity. Written by noted author and business consultant Robert M. Tomasko, this timely book offers a detailed rationale for steady, responsible growth and outlines five energizing, "people-centered" ways to introduce a new, growth-oriented dynamic into an organization. Supported by numerous examples of how successful companies have managed growth, Go for Growth shows how to match specific options with the resources and needs of specific companies, and how to focus the entire organization on the business of success. "Go for Growth is an important book because of the powerful, insightful way Bob Tomasko integrates personal growth, organizational change, and positive business strategy. It's a thoughtful, practical book—hard to put down, easy to apply. I think his best line is: 'Growth only happens when people grow'; that's a line I'd put on the wall of every executive's office!" —Robert J. Lee, Ph.D. President, Center for Creative Leadership "At a time when so many pundits advocate their pet silver bullet to growth, Tomasko refreshingly shuns the 'one size fits all' panacea by setting forth five sensible paths to profitable growth. He stresses that it is up to each management to sort out which path really makes sense given each company's unique situation." —Samuel M. Felton Strategic Leadership Forum "Go for Growth will help managers to determine what they need to do and what they need to avoid." —Michael Maccoby Author of Why Work? Motivating the New Workforce

Act Like an Owner

Act Like an Owner

Robert M. Blonchek; Martin F. O'Neill

John Wiley Sons Inc
1999
sidottu
Most workers are conditioned to view themselves as one-dimensional in relation to their company—as a salesperson, or an engineer, or a manager. But imagine the possibilities if everyone in your organization started thinking and acting like entrepreneurs—like owners of the business. Imagine if your employees shared the same beliefs, both in their abilities and in the purpose of your business, and focused all their energies on making that business successful—knowing that they, in turn, would become successful as well. That is the power of an ownership culture, and this book will show you how to mobilize human intellect and ingenuity for competitive advantage. Act Like an Owner is an action guide to building a culture of employee ownership within an organization. Authors Blonchek and O'Neill present their business model, "Act Like an Owner," which grew out of their experience building information technology service businesses. This model is a roadmap for applying today's most important management practices in a competitive, rapidly changing environment. The authors use this approach as part of their consulting practice, and are the first to detail how to implement such a program company-wide. Act Like an Owner introduces the internal franchise framework that can be used for unlocking the entrepreneurial spirit in your organization. From this book, you'll learn how to define your company's operating model—the way you choose to do business—and then extend the model to your employees. The authors then explain how to link employee behaviors to each element of business performance. They demonstrate how to focus your entire organization on a business goal while addressing employees' individual needs for opportunity and growth. You'll learn how to attract and hire people with a positive, entrepreneurial attitude who can create an environment that establishes the values and behaviors you need. At the heart of the internal franchise is the ownership culture, a corporate culture built on principles and values that compel everyone in your organization to think and act like an owner of the business. The authors describe the impact of an ownership culture on an organization, illustrating how you can build equity in that culture and make it part of your company's brand identity. They explore the power of such a culture to create an environment of shared values and goals. You'll learn the formula for creating an ownership culture and putting it to work in your organization, and you'll hear the perspectives of senior executives at companies currently adopting the "Act Like an Owner" program, including those at Aspen Systems, CACI, STAC, PSINet, and ConSonics. In addition, the authors apply the ownership culture model to one of the most pressing problems facing business today: attracting and retaining skilled workers. Filled with examples, anecdotes, and techniques, Act Like an Owner will motivate anyone trying to build a successful business that starts with people. "What a wonderful book. The only way organizations will be able to compete in the future is if their people act like owners and they create an ownership culture. A must read for the 21st century." —Ken Blanchard, coauthor, The One Minute Manager. "A terrific addition to any library. Marty O'Neill and Robert Blonchek have crafted an elegantly simple and uniquely powerful approach to enhancing the performance of any organization—large or small. I wholeheartedly recommend it." —Douglas R. Conant, President, U.S. Foods Group, Nabisco. "The new workplace demands that businesses find effective ways to release the power of people. Blonchek and O'Neill's 'Internal Franchise' idea turns the franchise concept inside out and provides a roadmap for ownership and empowerment in any organization." —Alan Randolph, coauthor, Empowerment Takes More Than a Minute. "Act Like an Owner gives you a treasure map to unlocking the fortunes that lie throughout an organization." —Bill Toler, President, Campbell Sales Company. "An insightful look at the elements of an ownership culture and how to put them to work in your company in order to attract, retain and motivate talented people." —J. Robert Beyster, Founder, Chairman and CEO, SAIC. "Act Like an Owner gives you the tools you need to develop and empower your employees to think and act like entrepreneurs." —Andrew C. Taylor, President and CEO, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, and 1997 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award Winner.

Parents want a special relationship with their children Parents care. They want to guide their children through the rough spots in life and help them make the right decisions. Research shows that a special parental connection is extremely important in safeguarding children against dangers such as substance abuse, sexual promiscuity, criminal activity, and suicide. This is more important than ever before in today’s troubled world. But what does making this connection mean? Based on Bowen family systems theory, Connecting with Our Children shows parents how to build the connection found in better relationships. Now parents have a new way to think about and respond to family problems. The author examines common concerns, such as:*How substance abuse can repeat through generations*Why fusions between family members drive conflict*How family anxiety can erupt into violence*Whether stepfamilies can create a new family unit*What roles faith and humor play in a family*How effective are special contributions made by connections with grandparentsNumerous practical examples and stories illustrate familiar situations and concerns, so that parents can learn how to deal with the often confusing situations surrounding their children, as well as those within their own lives. With a different perspective, parents can learn to overcome these difficulties, creating a stronger family and a happier, more open relationship between parent and child.

The Wiley-Interscience Paperback Series consists of selected books that have been made more accessible to consumers in an effort to increase global appeal and general circulation. With these new unabridged softcover volumes, Wiley hopes to extend the lives of these works by making them available to future generations of statisticians, mathematicians, and scientists. "Survey Errors and Survey Costs is a well-written, well-presented, and highly readable text that should be on every error-conscious statistician’s bookshelf. Any courses that cover the theory and design of surveys should certainly have Survey Errors and Survey Costs on their reading lists." –Phil Edwards MEL, Aston University Science Park, UK Review in The Statistician, Vol. 40, No. 3, 1991 "This volume is an extremely valuable contribution to survey methodology. It has many virtues: First, it provides a framework in which survey errors can be segregated by sources. Second, Groves has skillfully synthesized existing knowledge, bringing together in an easily accessible form empirical knowledge from a variety of sources. Third, he has managed to integrate into a common framework the contributions of several disciplines. For example, the work of psychometricians and cognitive psychologists is made relevant to the research of econometricians as well as the field experience of sociologists. Finally, but not least, Groves has managed to present all this in a style that is accessible to a wide variety of readers ranging from survey specialists to policymakers." –Peter H. Securing the Sacred

Securing the Sacred

Robert M. Bosco

The University of Michigan Press
2016
nidottu
Since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, Western nations have increasingly recognized religion as a consideration in domestic and foreign policy. In this empirical comparison of the securitization of Islam in Britain, France, and the United States, Robert M. Bosco argues that religion is a category of phenomena defined by the discourses and politics of both religious and state elites. Despite significant theoretical distinctions between securitization on the domestic and the international levels, he finds that the outcome of addressing religion within the context of security hinges upon partnerships. Whereas states may harness the power of international allies, they cannot often find analogous domestic allies; therefore, states that attempt to securitize religion at home are more vulnerable to counterattack and more likely to abandon their efforts. Securing the Sacred makes a significant contribution to the fields of political theory, international relations, Islamic studies, and security/military studies.
