Rising on the National Mall next to the Washington Monument, the National Museum of African American History and Culture is a tiered bronze beacon inviting everyone to learn about the richness and diversity of the African American experience and how it helped shape this nation. Begin with the Past: Building the National Museum of African American History and Culture is the story of how this unparalleled museum found its place in the nation's collective memory and on its public commons. Begin with the Past presents the long history of efforts to build a permanent place to collect, study and present African American history and culture. In 2003 the museum was officially established at long last, yet the work of the museum was only just beginning. The book traces the appointment of the director, the selection of the site and the process of conceiving, designing and constructing a public monument to the achievements and contributions of African Americans. The careful selection of architects, designers and engineers culminated in a museum that embodies African American sensibilities about space, form and material and incorporates rich cultural symbols into the design of the building and its surrounding landscape. The National Museum of African American History and Culture is a place for all Americans to understand our past and embrace our future and this book is a testament to the inspiration and determination that went into creating this unique place.

A group of half a dozen missionaries were gathered for prayer in a simply furnished living room of a mission house in China. For a few minutes one of the group spoke to us out of his heart, and I shall never forget the gist of what he said. -You know, - he began, -there's a great deal of difference between eating bitterness Chinese idiom for 'suffering hardship'] and eating loss Chinese idiom for 'suffering the infringement of one's rights']. 'Eating bitterness' is easy enough. To go out with the preaching band, walk twenty or thirty miles to the place where you are to work, help set up the tent, placard the town with posters, and spend several weeks in a strenuous campaign of meetings and visitation-why, that's a thrill Your bed may be made of a couple of planks laid on sawhorses, and you may have to eat boiled rice, greens, and beancurd three times a day. But that's just the beauty of it

In The Monster as War Machine, European monster tradition intersects with American mass-media production and new philosophical approaches to examine topics of community, political power, alternative representations of race and gender, identity, hybridity, political agency, and collective subjectivity. In this book, cultural theory, close readings of literary texts, and interpretations of visual materials come together, covering a wide and diversified cultural territory. Some of the authors included in this study are Agamben, Badiou, Baudrillard, Deleuze, Esposito, Foucault, Freud, Haraway, Hardt, Kristeva, Marx, Negri, and Zizek, whose works illuminate the disruptive and at times emancipatory role of monstrosity as a representation of excess, instinct, evil, truth, and rebelliousness. This book is an important resource for those studying film, contemporary literature, and popular culture. This book is in the Cambria Latin American Literatures and Cultures Series headed by Rom n de la Campa, the Edwin B. and Lenore R. Williams Professor of Romance Languages at the University of Pennsylvania.
