This is the first book-length study devoted to the work of Marie Darrieussecq, one of France’s leading contemporary writers, whose work has proved fascinating to both critics and readers for its diversity, the author’s seeming ability to evade established literary categories and the changes in focus of her trajectory. This volume focuses on this ambivalence, highlighting the capacity of Darrieussecq’s texts both to confront contemporary social issues, such as national identity and the role of women, and examine the complex relationship between language and reality. Focusing on the mid-section of her œuvre (Bref séjour chez les vivants, Le Bébé and Le Pays), the author of this study brings together Darrieussecq’s social realism, her emphasis on the productive and creative roles of language and narrative, and her interest in the role of social discourse in the formation of identity. The analysis in this book highlights the significant questions that Darrieussecq’s texts raise about the ways in which we perceive and narrate the world and makes clear the original and essential nature of Darrieussecq’s continuing literary project.

Marie Neurath (1898-1986) was an illustrator and graphic designer who, from the mid-1940s to the late 1960s, created innovative non-fiction books for children. Together with her husband, politician and philosopher Otto Neurath (1882-1945), and artist and designer Gerd Arntz (1900-1988), she developed a method of visual representation in 1920s Vienna that became known as Isotype (International System of Typographic Picture Education). Influenced by the progressive ideas of the Vienna Circle, Isotype was intended to contribute to the democratization of knowledge. To this end, the Neuraths and their team created a special form of pictorial statistics that meant to make complex scientific relationships accessible to the layperson. In the postwar period, Marie Neurath developed several series of informative picturebooks for children that incorporated and further developed the Isotype principles. Although these picturebooks were hugely successful in their time, international picturebook research has barely acknowledged Marie Neurath’s legacy. This anthology is the first to elaborate Marie Neurath’s achievement as a transformer of knowledge for children and to analyze her distinctive, groundbreaking graphic method.

This book examines the life, work and contraversial achievements of Marie Stopes, author and pioneer of the birth control movement in the interwar period. As the centenary of the ground-breaking publication of Married Love approaches, this study traces and reassesses Marie’s remarkable achievements, considering the literary, scientific and political themes of her life’s work. Clare Debenham analyses how Stope’s personal life led her to turn away from palaeobotany to concentrate on transforming the country’s sexual relationships by writing Married Love. Utilising extensive unpublished archive research, biographies, letters, and interviews with her friends and relatives, Debenham demonstrates that Stopes's work on sexual relationships has overshadowed her considerable achievements including her scientific career as a paleaobotantist, her literary success in the interwar period, and her work, with help from suffragists, in establishing the first British birth control clinic.
