Explore the Captivating Life of Martin Van Buren History chiefly remembers Martin Van Buren as the eighth president of the United States (1837- 1841). He was also, however, notable for achieving many firsts in American politics. He was the first American president to be born a citizen of the country, and not a British subject. He was the first Dutchman and the first man without Anglo-Saxon ancestry to serve as president. He was the first and only American president to have been raised in a language other than English. He was also the first New Yorker to ascend to the Oval Office in the White House, at a time when Manhattan was becoming the urban heart of a future America (as it is today). Historians have also recognized him as the first "professional politician" to occupy the presidential seat. His expressed capacity for political intrigue, strategic pragmatism and politically expedient "non-committalism" has earned him his fair share of critics and detractors. The darkness of his times (the first depression, the question of slavery, the forceful relocation of Native American tribes from their ancestral lands) easily come to mind, but America was also hurtling towards the future we live in during Van Buren's reign. The seeds of the modernity we recognize so well - railway networks, democracy, the printing press - were sowed in his era. Six small townships and cities - in Maine, Kentucky, Indiana, Missouri, Ohio, and Arkansas - still bear his surname. To understand the history of American politics, one must understand Van Buren's often overlooked legacy. This book will give you an in-depth understanding of this man, born a tavern owner's son, who became one of the founders of the Democratic Party. Some of the topics covered in this book include: Early Life The Skilled Lawyer The Albany Regency Washington Secretary of State; Vice President In-Waiting The Panic of 1837 American Gothic Triumphs and Defeat Comebacks Retirement And much more Get the book now to learn more

Martin Sabo: The Making of the Modern Legislature

Martin Sabo: The Making of the Modern Legislature

Lori Sturdevant

Minnesota Historical Society Press

nidottu
USCongressman Martin Sabo's early work in Minnesota state government set the moldfor how state legislatures across the country have operated since, andcontinues to wield influence today. Known best as the former USRepresentative of Minnesota's Fifth District, with twenty-eight years ofservice including leadership roles on key committees, Martin Sabo also madesignificant contributions to American political life earlier in his career, while serving in the Minnesota state legislature. Minnesota has longbeen acknowledged as the state that works. Its government has been celebrated, if occasionally contested, and has been emulated by other states for decades. But today's modern, professional state legislature was not inevitable. In thelate 1960s-early 1970s Minnesota took a giant step toward a state governmentthat fairly represents all the state's regions and populations, one thatoperates in public view. It was a government that shouldered increasedresponsibility for the education and well-being of its citizens. And it servedas an operational model for legislatures around the country. At the center ofthose changes was a modest young man from tiny Alkabo, North Dakota, MartinOlav Sabo. Sabo demonstrated an understanding of representative democracy and aquality of leadership that made him a highly effective catalyst for positivechange. He spent his entire adult life in public service, but it was during hisyears as DFL minority leader and as speaker of the Minnesota House that he didhis most transformative and enduring work--remaking legislatures for the better. In Martin Sabo, award-winner author Lori Sturdevant transports readersto the farm and the city, to the campaign trail and the capitol, and to therooms where so many things happened. Enhancing Sabo's richlegacy, this volume focuses attention on his early career and the systemic, foundational contributions to governance his efforts accomplished.
Martin Parr: The Non-Conformists (Signed Edition)
In 1975, fresh out of art school, Martin Parr moved to the picturesque Yorkshire Pennine mill town of Hebden Bridge. Over a period of five years, he documented the town in photographs, showing in particular the aspects of traditional life that were beginning to decline. Susan Mitchell, whom he had met in Manchester and later married, joined Parr in documenting a year in the life of a small Methodist chapel, together with its farming community. Such chapels seemed to encapsulate the region's disappearing way of life. Here Martin Parr found his photographic voice, while together he and Susie assembled a remarkable and touching historic document--now published in book form for the first time. The book takes its title from the Methodist and Baptist chapels that then characterized this area of Yorkshire and defined the fiercely independent character of the town. Non-Conformist Methodists reject the tenets of state Anglicism, and the Non-Conformist chapel of Hebden Bridge is central to the town and its community. In words and pictures, the Parrs vividly and affectionately document cobbled streets, flat-capped mill workers, hardy gamekeepers, henpecked husbands and jovial shop owners. The best Parr photographs are interwoven with Susie Parr's detailed background descriptions of the society they observed.Martin Parr (born 1952) is a key figure in the world of photography, recognized as a brilliant satirist of contemporary life. Author of more than 30 photography books, including "Common Sense, Our True Intent Is All for Your Delight" and "Life's a Beach," his photographs have been collected by museums worldwide, including the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, New York's Museum of Modern Art and Tate Modern, London. A retrospective of his work continues to tour major museums around the world since opening at the Barbican Art Gallery, London, in 2002. Parr is a member of Magnum Photos.

Martin Chuzzlewit, Volume I (Esprios Classics)
The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit is a novel by Charles Dickens, considered the last of his picaresque novels. It was originally serialised between 1842 and 1844. While he was writing it, Dickens told a friend that he thought it was his best work, but it was one of his least popular novels. The main theme of the novel, according to Dickens's preface, is selfishness, portrayed in a satirical fashion using all the members of the Chuzzlewit family. The novel is also notable for two of Dickens's great villains, Seth Pecksniff and Jonas Chuzzlewit.
