Mary Ellen Bute: Pioneer Animator captures the personal and professional life of Mary Ellen Bute (1906–1983) one of the first American filmmakers to create abstract animated films in 1934, also one of the first Americans to use the electronic image of the oscilloscope in films starting in 1949, and the first filmmaker to interpret James Joyce's literature for the screen, Passages from James Joyce's Finnegans Wake, a live-action film for which she won a Cannes Film Festival Prize in 1965. Bute had an eye for talent and selected many creative people who would go on to be famous. She hired Norman McLaren to hand paint on film for the animation of her Spook Sport, 1939, before he left to head the animation department of the Canadian Film Board. She cast the now famous character actor Christopher Walken at age fourteen as the star of her short live-action film, The Boy Who Saw Through, 1958. Also, Bute enlisted Elliot Kaplan to compose the film score of her Finnegans Wake before he moved on to compose music for TV's Fantasy Island and Ironside. This biography drawn from interviews with Bute's family, friends, and colleagues, presents the personal and professional life of the filmmaker and her behind-the-scenes process of making animated and live action films.

A new study of Mary Cassatt that explores the centrality of work to both her inventive technical practice and her distinctive approach to modern subjects Mary Cassatt’s (1844–1926) sensitive depictions of the social, intellectual, and professional lives of modern women often emphasize the work involved in the undervalued sphere of feminized activity. From her renowned portrayals of women and children that foreground the labor of caregiving—whether performed by hired help or mothers—to her images of embroidering, theatergoing, and reading, her female subjects are actively engaged, and often engrossed, in what they are doing. Highlighting Cassatt’s attention to women’s roles in the making of modern life, this study connects her recurring subjects and rigorous techniques to her own understanding of her status as a professional artist. The life of Mary Heaton Vorse (1874-1966) reads like a chronology of American radicalism in the first half of the twentieth century. The foremost pioneer of labor journalism in the U.S. and a prominent participant in the women's universal suffrage movement, Vorse spent her life actively struggling for libertarian socialism, feminism, and world peace. A rebel at a young age, she fled her wealthy New England family and settled in Greenwich Village in the early 1900s. Widowed twice, she wrote magazine stories to support her three children and became, for several decades, one of the most popular writers of women's fiction in the U.S. As a labor journalist and war correspondent, she traveled to Lenin's Moscow and Hitler's Germany; she participated in the Lawrence Textile Strike, the Great Steel Strike of 1919, and the uprisings in Gastonia and Bloody Harlan County.She reported the early struggles and rise of the CIO in the 1930s. Her commitment to feminism led to her presence at women's rallies in Europe and America; her unique contribution to the journalism of her time was to give consistent attention to the special concerns of women and their role in the labor movement. She wrote six other novels, was a distinguished alumna of Texas Tech University, and was a member of Texas Institute of Letters. She received the LeBaron R. Barker Jr. Prize in 1975 for ""Mary Dove"" and the Texas Literary Award for Fiction in 1984 for ""Winds of Blame"".
