The Reformist Illuminations in the Gospels of Matilda, Countess of Tuscany
The Gospels of Matilda, Countess of Tuscany, is a manuscript written and illuminated in Northern Italy toward the end of the eleventh century. A credible fourteenth century document states that it was presented by the Countess to the Benedictine monastery of Polirone, near Mantua. In the manuscript's pictorial cycle, the Cleansing of the Temple and the scenes related to it are iconographically extra ordinary. An understanding of them must begin with a study of their ideological sources, closely related historic figures, Medieval writers who employed the figure of the Cleansing of the Temple, and the political-social movement of the Patarines. Then the Matilda Gospels' illuminations will stand revealed as the key artistic expression of the Gregorian Reform and as a prime document of some of the most important events and ideas of the Middle Ages. II. ART AND THE REFORM OF THE ELEVENTH CENTURY Church reform in the eleventh century was a heroic engage ment. Norman Cantor calls it one of the four great «world revolutions» of Western history.! The authority of the papacy, the independence of the church, and the very leadership of Medie val society were its mortally contested issues critical both to history and to political theory.2 Gregory VII and Matilda of Tuscany were but two of the vivid personalities among its partisans. But in the history of art the struggle has been nearly invisible.

These three works of fiction - two by Mary Wollstonecraft, the radical author of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, and one by her daughter Mary Shelley, creator of Frankenstein - are powerfully emotive stories that combine passion with forceful feminist argument. In Mary Wollstonecraft's Mary, the heroine flees her young husband in order to nurse her dearest friend, Ann, and finds genuine love, while Maria tells of a desperate young woman who seeks consolation in the arms of another man after the loss of her child. And Mary Shelley's Matilda - suppressed for over a century - tells the story of a woman alienated from society by the incestuous passion of her father. Humane, compassionate and highly controversial, these stories demonstrate the strongly original genius of their authors.

Hey Harry, Hey Matilda is the story told entirely in hilarious emails of fraternal twins Harry and Matilda Goodman as they fumble into adulthood, telling lies and keeping secrets, and finally confronting their complicated twinship. Matilda Goodman is an underemployed wedding photographer grappling with her failure to live as an artist and the very bad lie she has told her boyfriend (that she has a dead twin). Harry, her (totally alive) brother, is an untenured professor of literature, anxiously contemplating his publishing status (unpublished) and sleeping with a student. When Matilda invites her boyfriend home for Thanksgiving to meet the family, and when Harry makes a desperate and unethical move to save his career, they set off an avalanche of shame, scandal, and drunken hot tub revelations that force them to examine the truth about who they really are. A wonderfully subversive, sensitive novel of romantic entanglement and misguided ambition, Hey Harry, Hey Matilda is a joyful look at love and family in all its forms.

Matilda (Glover) Koontz was thirty-seven years old, a pregnant wife, and the mother of four young sons when she joined her husband in May 1847 for their trek across the Oregon Trail, lured by the promise of fertile farmland in the Willamette Valley. But then the unthinkable happened: her husband, Nicholas, drowned while crossing the Snake River. After a series of tragedies, she fulfilled her husband's dream and arrived with their sons at Oregon City--but then what? In early 1848, the widow with four sons married John R. Jackson, a British-born naturalized American, and traveled north to his log cabin known as Highland Farm. Although plagued by sorrow and loss, this resilient pioneer woman helped shape Washington Territory and gained a reputation for hospitality, kindness, and good cooking throughout the territory--and even in the nation's capital of Washington City."This book is a 'must read.' It tells the incredible and exciting story of one woman's journey on foot across the plains to the promised land of Oregon Territory. In many ways, Matilda Koontz Jackson could be described as the 'first lady' of Washington State. She watched it all unroll in front of her eyes and she played a significant part in making our life what it is today. The book is well written and documented with many details that the other historians have missed. Frankly, I loved the book and recommend it to all. Readers will not be disappointed " Ralph Munro, retired Washington Secretary of State, 1980-2000
