Naamiwan’s Drum follows the story of a famous Ojibwe medicine man, his gifted grandson, and remarkable water drum. This drum, and forty other artefacts, were given away by a Canadian museum to an American Anishinaabe group that had no family or community connections to the collection. Many years passed before the drum was returned to the family and only about half of the artefacts were ever returned to the museum. Maureen Matthews takes us through this astonishing set of events from multiple perspectives, exploring community and museum viewpoints, visiting the ceremonial group leader in Wisconsin, and finally looking back from the point of view of the drum. The book contains a powerful Anishinaabe interpretive perspective on repatriation and on anthropology itself. The intention of this little book is to share, in a straightforward way, many of the lessons, wisdom and knowledge that I have garnered from life experience, study and great spiritual teachers.
This book is about the challenges and successes of a long and mostly very hard life and what these experiences have taught the author. Many of us consider our liberation can be found in our current belief system. So, we struggle and strive unsuccessfully to find the answers there. But what if our current thought or belief system is the cause and not the answer? We have two choices then. One option is, we can cling doggedly to our thought systems, refusing to question or consider any thoughts that go beyond it. We can then define ourselves as victims, or we are faulty in some way. Something or someone must be to blame for our failure? Or we can take a risk, a leap of faith and seriously question those beliefs. We have nothing to lose but our misery - it's all in the choosing
