Pero no ser a hasta el a o 1972, con su papel como co-protagonista junto a Karl Malden en el thriller para la televisi n "Las Calles de San Francisco" (ABC, 1972-77), cuando comenz a brillar con luz propia. Junto a su trabajo para la televisi n, consigui destacar como productor ejecutivo en la obra de Milos Forman "Alguien vol sobre el nido del cuco" (1975), pel cula de gran impacto que consigui cinco Oscar, incluso una estatuilla a la Mejor Pel cula compartida entre Douglas y Saul Zaentz.
