Meet Jimmy Hanlon. It's summer, 1987. Jimmy's a closeted bisexual in his late forties, nine months removed from a laryngectomy, and in this first part of a trilogy, he's anxious to find a new identity in his Jersey Shore hometown. He hitches his hopes to a 33 year old lifeguard. The two cruise into summer with an assortment of boardwalk denizens and bar hounds. When they both fall for the same pretty nurse, the ride starts to get bumpy. In Jimmy's story of redemption, dreams, familial and romantic love, misogamy and prejudice, accommodation and empathy, he discovers that the real victories occur in the small, courageous moments of our lives that overcome societal and personal prejudice.

The Missing You in Belmar, NJ trilogy concludes with Summer Mirrors, where change shapes the lives of the five main characters, drawing them closer to their shared core-resilience. As Labor Day nears, Jimmy is determined to heal his family relationships and earn respect. But the summer's twists aren't over yet. With autumn's harsh reality on the horizon, Jimmy comes to understand that empathy doesn't require shared blood, courage often works quietly in the background, and true redemption only needs recognition from one person-the man in the mirror.

Not Impossible

Not Impossible

Mick Ebeling

Discover the “road map to changing your life by changing the lives of others” (Jillian Michaels, New York Times bestselling author) with the eye-opening and inspirational story of how one person—a film producer by trade and an optimist by nature—accidentally realized that no problem is unsolvable with a little bit of DIY. As an enthusiastic participant in the Maker Movement, Mick Ebeling has found countless ways to create new, simple, do-it-yourself technologies. But Ebeling has always dreamed big and soon realized that by ignoring that little voice of doubt in his head, his hobby could have the potential to actually help people surmount seemingly impossible odds. From crafting prosthetics for a young Sudanese boy who lost his hands in a bombing to a machine that allowed a paralyzed artist to draw again, Ebeling soon saw that nothing is actually impossible. Now, he shares his fascinating accomplishments including the creation of the Eyewriter—a device that tracks eye movements and translates them onto a screen, allowing them to be painted on a canvas or printed into a 3D sculpture. A true testament to the power of determination, Not Impossible is the launching pad for you to uncover your abilities to change the world, too. Bursting with optimism and new ideas, “this is the template for a new science of consciousness. Mick Ebeling sees impossible just as a word for something not yet done. Read his book. Think like him. Then do the impossible” (Deepak Chopra).

Trauma and Disability in Mad Max

Trauma and Disability in Mad Max

This book explores the inter-relationship of disability and trauma in the Mad Max films (1979-2015). George Miller’s long-running series is replete with narratives and imagery of trauma, both physical and emotional, along with major and minor characters who are prominently disabled. The Mad Max movies foreground representations of the body – in devastating injury and its lasting effects – and in the broader social and historical contexts of trauma, disability, gender and myth.Over the franchise’s four-decade span significant social and cultural change has occurred globally. Many of the images of disability and trauma central to Max’s post-apocalyptic wasteland can be seen to represent these societal shifts, incorporating both decline and rejuvenation. These shifts include concerns with social, economic and political disintegration under late capitalism, projections of survival after nuclear war, and the impact of anthropogenic climate change.Drawing on screen production processes, textual analysis and reception studies this book interrogates the role of these representations of disability, trauma, gender and myth to offer an in-depth cultural analysis of the social critiques evident within the fantasies of Mad Max.
