The Singing Chair and Other Stories

The Singing Chair and Other Stories

A collection of stories drawn from the author’s long and eventful life (born in 1920). Many are based on the author’s personal experience of life in Central Europe after the First World War. The writing has a sense of mystery and fantasy, but always laced with a wry sense of humour. This is a fascinating and wide ranging collection of stories, many having an almost cinematic quality from the author also being a painter. There are stories drawing on the author’s childhood and youth in Vienna, and visiting the family farm in Moravia in the aftermath of the First World War. Herta’s mother decided to leave home for Vienna as a teenager, and was taken on by a seamstress, who read to her girls while they were sewing, giving her an abiding love of literature that she passed on to her daughter. Herta experienced the rise of Nazism in Austria and Hitler’s Anchluss of the country, and several stories in this section reflect this period vividly. In the title story, The Singing Chair, a prosperous but stressed businessman is transported into a calming universe by a ‘magic’ chair. There follow other poignant and quirky tales of passion between the sexes. By contrast, others draw on Herta’s experience of postwar Germany – her British husband was part of the British Control Commission there. In Demeter, two British officers are rivals for the love of a destitute but beautiful refugee they rescue from a bombed-out street. Many of the stories add the ingredient of mystery and intrigue, but always permeated with the author’s characteristic humanity and wry sense of humour. The Magnolia Gown is set in the cut-throat world of the East London rag trade; Spash is a glorious short burst of fantasy as a woman visitor to Vienna’s Schönbrunn Palace during a heatwave is lured into the baroque fountain to become one of Neptune’s mermaids.

In these quirky and often erudite tales, you'll meet scores of larger-than-life characters: a canny Palm Beach trophy husband, a burnt-out college poet, and a financial adviser who startles his neighbors with his fantastic Danse du Diable. There's one of those irritating city bus riders who crowds in next to you and won't shut up. (At one point, he confesses to his trapped seat mate, "Orangutans are my kind of guys." And means it )In New York City's Central Park, Catholic schoolboys fight mock battles. In rural Florida and with just one punch from his bony hammer of a fist, a race-car mechanic (reputed to be the ugliest man who ever lived) sparks a riot that disrupts a car race and punctures the pretentions of an entire town.In a gentler tale, a young man recalls with longing his friendship with a remote, almost mystical woman; in another, a less innocent lover struggles against his unwavering adoration for his paramour, who - he knows - intends literally to destroy him.Opera singers, posturing professors, would-be revolutionaries, and more It's all here in Tutelary Presences: a cavalcade of memorable characters and remarkable events guaranteed to bring you unparalleled illumination and unstinting delight.

In these delightful pages, Johann Moser reaches deep into the poetic traditions of many times and various cultures to create for us an abundance of verse in different forms and on an astounding variety of themes. Here are tender love poems and lovely evocations of natural landscapes and of the creatures that dwell in them. There's also a fantasy piece inspired by modern masters such as Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. One sequence features a number of venerable medieval genres, including Arthurian motifs, a troubadour love song, a Crusader hymn, and a satirical "confession" of the notorious folklore scoundrel Reynard the Fox. Other poems resound with the energy and color of great images culled from a multitude of sources, including, among others, the Rosenkavalier's marvelous entrance bearing the Silver Rose of betrothal, the prayer of Odysseus to the white sea-goddess Leucothea, the great philosopher Abelard's touching lament over a dying rabbit, and the stampede of a herd of wild bulls down from the biblically famed mountains of Bashan. Here is a rich gallery of dynamic poems to delight the intellect and illuminate the soul of our time.

Beginning with its title poem, a political elegy rooted in both Western and Eastern lyrical traditions and set in the elegant gardens of Dumbarton Oaks, this second volume of verse by Johann Moser offers for your pleasure a sumptuous banquet of poetic legacies and achievements. It includes the delightful sequence " tudes: For Shakespearian Voices," composed to pay homage to the prosodic and figurative virtuosity of the Bard. Other sequences explore the demands and delights of the rural life, the glory of seascapes, and a host of traditional verse kinds, some of them embracing such macabre expostulations as the Moritat and the Gallows Song. There's a memorial to the Irish Brigade that fought at Gettysburg that integrates into its Civil War imagery allusions to an ancient Irish battle hymn from the eighth century. The volume concludes with an extensive series of sprightly marionette dance-songs composed in iambic tetrameter couplets and a set of literary "palimpsests" written to perpetuate some features of great literary classics, including Hamlet, Don Quixote, Moby Dick, and the Munchausen "tall-tale" tradition.

As beautiful artifacts of speech, these poems are marked by a delightful radiance and beauty of form. Suffused with delight in the splendor of high culture, the divine, and the most sublime of human virtues, their finely crafted lines regale us with rich tapestries of history and the natural world.Although most are nourished by Western literary traditions (ranging from Greco-Roman antiquity through the Middle Ages and on to our own time), others have been crafted in accordance with the very best Near Eastern, classical Chinese, and even Sanskrit models. Many are grand, regal, and erudite; others are quieter, yet compelling in their tenderness and delicacy. All, however, cry out to be read aloud, to be heard, and to be treasured again and again.
