The Portuguese mariners under Vasco da Gama in search of spices landed on the Malabar Coast at the fag end of the fifteenth century. Slowly they established factories, fortresses and other commercial establishments in places allotted to them by the local rulers, while their missionary zeal brought them in contact with people of the Malabar Coast, both non-Christians as well as St. Thomas Christians. The economic, social and cultural legacy of the Portuguese interaction with the Malabar Coast is clearly?discernible?in?the?geographic?segment?now?known?as?Kerala.Once the Portuguese obtained territorial possessions outside the Malabar Coast, they commenced to establish political control and introduced European administrative apparatus in Asia. However, these colonies could not be kept under the Portuguese sway forever. They made attempts to liberate themselves from the colonial authority of the Portuguese finally?leading?to?their?liberation.During the Portuguese presence in India for over 450 years, innumerable social transformations took place. This book is an attempt to explore the themes related to economy, trade, commercial ventures, urbanization, socio-cultural interactions as well as the various stages of movements connected?with?the?liberation?of?Portuguese?settlements?in?India.

This book is about my experiences about why and how I set about soldiering and what life was like in the Indian Army. I have included a lot of my experiences/anecdotes/happenings related to the Assam Regiment, the North-Eastern region of India, Jammu & Kashmir (particularly during the latter part of the Kargil War and its aftermath) and the Chinese.I end this book with my thoughts on what in the Indian Army was good and what was flawed and some of my experiences on trying to fit into the retired life.It is important that you as the reader recognise and appreciate that this book is written after much thought, analysis and reflection by a man who had made the Indian Army his career and life. The perspectives, thoughts, analyses, and interpretations I have penned down here are both personal and professional, based on the 44 years I have spent in uniform in a profession that I enjoyed, loved and sometimes found extremely frustrating.

This book focuses on molecular shapes, molecular symmetry, application of molecular orbital concepts to the compounds of main-group and transition elements of varied symmetry, metal-metal bonding, organometallic compounds such as ferrocene, fundamentals of redox properties, and spectroscopic term symbols. For compounds of d-block elements, it delves into discussions on structures and bonding theories (valence bond, crystal field, and molecular orbital), properties (magnetic, spectral, and redox), and reactivities. Basics and applications of organometallic compounds of d-block elements in catalysis and selected topics of bioinorganic chemistry have also been included. An attempt has been made to integrate selected focused topics, which is expected to help both the students and instructors, reducing the need to consult other specialized books. For the convenience of the instructors and students, the book highlights in each chapter take home messages. Examples in each subtopic, and at the end of any chapter a list of further reading and exercises to critically think about the concepts are discussed. Almost every chapter lists references to the literature and reviews that has been found to be particularly useful in the advanced Inorganic Chemistry courses. At the end of the book an appendix that gives hints/full answers of the exercises is included.
Statistical Methods in Social Science Research

Statistical Methods in Social Science Research

Springer Verlag, Singapore

This book presents various recently developed and traditional statistical techniques, which are increasingly being applied in social science research. The social sciences cover diverse phenomena arising in society, the economy and the environment, some of which are too complex to allow concrete statements; some cannot be defined by direct observations or measurements; some are culture- (or region-) specific, while others are generic and common. Statistics, being a scientific method – as distinct from a ‘science’ related to any one type of phenomena – is used to make inductive inferences regarding various phenomena. The book addresses both qualitative and quantitative research (a combination of which is essential in social science research) and offers valuable supplementary reading at an advanced level for researchers.

This book is a timely document of state-of-the art analytical techniques in the domain of stream cipher design and analysis with a specific cipher, named ZUC. It links new research to brief contextual literature review in the domain of complex LFSR-based stream ciphers. A snapshot of how stream ciphers are deployed in the mobile telephony architecture, one of the most well-known topics for more than five decades in the domain of computer and communication sciences, is presented in this book. The book provides an in-depth study on design and cryptanalysis of ZUC as well as relevant research results in this field with directions towards future analysis of this cipher.

Quality Control and Evaluation of Herbal Drugs brings together current thinking and practices for evaluation of natural products and traditional medicines. The use of herbal medicine in therapeutics is on the rise in both developed and developing countries and this book facilitates the necessary development of quality standards for these medicines. This book elucidates on various challenges and opportunities for quality evaluation of herbal drugs with several integrated approaches including metabolomics, chemoprofiling, marker analysis, stability testing, good practices for manufacturing, clinical aspects, Ethnopharmacology and Ethnomedicine inspired drug development. Written by Prof. Pulok K Mukherjee, a leader in this field; the book highlights on various methods, techniques and approaches for evaluating the purity, quality, safety and efficacy of herbal drugs. Particular attention is paid to methods that assess these drugs’ activity, the compounds responsible and their underlying mechanisms of action. The book describes the quality control parameters followed in India and other countries, including Japan, China, Bangladesh, and other Asian countries, as well as the regulatory profiles of the European Union and North America. This book will be useful in bio-prospecting of natural products and traditional medicine-inspired drug discovery and development.
