Multiple choices

In 2006, when my colleague Andrea Renda proposed multiple primary malignancies (MPM) as the subject of the Biennial Report to the 2008 Congress of the Italian - ciety of Surgery, I, together with the Steering Committee, quickly agreed. Recent progress in our understanding of the etiopathology of these neoplasms has led to - novative and significant progress on the clinical level. Importantly, the incidence of the onset of two or more tumors in the same patient suggests a more than casual - lationship. Furthermore, the occurrence of MPM derives from several different me- anisms—viral, iatrogenic, immunologic, environmental, and hereditary—such that any form of treatment must take into account the etiology of these tumors. After an epidemiological introduction, this monograph analyzes various aspects of multitumoral syndromes based on the experience of the Department of Surgical Sciences, along with that of other clinical departments of the University Federico II of Naples. In the discussion of inherited tumors, reference is made to the series of patients treated at the Department of Surgery at the University of Siena. The many topics that comprise this volume range from carcinogenesis to diagnostic strategies, and from epidemiology to innovations in imaging and endoscopic techniques. Among the clinical aspects, particular emphasis is given to sporadic and hereditary syndromes, as these patients are frequently treated by general surgery departments.

There are many aspects to multiple sclerosis that are puzzling to patients and perplexing to health professionals – the “invisible symptoms”. These include pain, fatigue, cognitive impairment, psychiatric aspects, and the effect of MS on self and family. These less concrete symptoms may be overlooked at consultation, perhaps because the patient has limited awareness of the precise difficulties that they are experiencing or of the importance of sharing this experience with a healthworker. Often more abstract and subtle in nature than the physical symptoms, they are usually also harder to talk about. In any event, the invisible symptoms require specific knowledge and expertise for successful assessment and management. Healthcare professionals must achieve a shared perspective of clinical needs and best practise. Multiple Sclerosis- the invisible impacts offers authoritative, accessible summaries for healthcare workers. Each invisible impact has a separate heading, and is thus easily locatable. Each invisible impact has two dedicated chapters: the evidence base; and clinical assessment and management. The evidence base is a current, expert synthesis of the relevant research, with priority given to major reviews and summaries of key and classic papers from all disciplines that have informed the field or presage new developments. The clinical assessment and management chapter is a comprehensive, practical guide to evidence-based clinical work in a multidisciplinary context. This arrangement of material allows efficient and near-immediate access to specific practise information, which is further facilitated by a common structure shared by these chapters. The theoretical models and research that underpin the development of the recommended assessment techniques, investigations, measures and treatments are conveniently presented separately, so that the reader may consider them when they have the time. ?

Multiple Exposures

The exhibition and its accompanying catalogue are the first to examine the union of contemporary jewellery and the photographic image, demonstrating how each of these mediums is informed and enlarged by an engagement with the other. The works included, both historical pieces and recent creations by over eighty international art jewellers, suggest the richness of this encounter and the artistic strength embodied in this dynamic combination of object and image. The examples selected for the exhibition and catalogue traverse a remarkably wide range, from traditional and even sentimental formats (such as the locket) to entirely new formats. Drawing upon the abundance of imagery available today, from vintage daguerreotypes to analog and digital photographs, X-rays, and Internet jpegs, the artists whose work was selected for Multiple Exposures: Jewelry and Photography express a stimulating range of ideas realised with a great diversity of materials and innovative jewellery-making approaches.
Multiple Criteria Decision Analysis in Regional Planning

Multiple Criteria Decision Analysis in Regional Planning

This book is devoted to presenting theoretical fundamentals for the methods of multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) in the social sciences with particular intent to their applicability to real-world decision making. The main characteristics of the complex problems facing humans in the world today are multidimensional and have multiple objecti ves; they are large-scale, and have nonconimensura te and conflicting objectives, such as economic, environmental, societal, technical, and aesthetic ones. The authors intend to establish basic concepts for treating these complex problems and to present methodological discussions for MCDM with some applications to administrative, or regional, planning. MCDM is composed of two phases: analytical and judgmental. In this book, we intend to consolidate these two phases and to present integrated methodologies for manipulating them with particular interest in managerial decision making, which has not yet been properly treated in spite of its urgent necessi ty. Al though a number of books in MCDM fields have already been published in recent years, most of them have mainly trea ted one aspect of MCDM. Our work specifically intends to trea t the methodology in unified systems and to construct a conceptual structure with special regards to the intrinsic properties of MCDM and its "economic meanings" from the social scientific point of view.
Multiple Drug Resistance in Cancer 2
Resistance to chemotherapy, and especially multi-drug resistance, represents a significant barrier to the successful treatment of cancer. This multi-author volume brings together a wide range of up-to-date reviews on different aspects of our knowledge of drug-resistance mechanisms, written by experts in the different areas. Particular attention is paid to recently discovered mechanisms relating to oncogene expression and in particular to proteins involved in regulation and execution of apoptosis. Other important topics covered include DNA repair, topoisomerases, cell cycle control, oxygenation and vascularisation of tumours, LRP, intermediate filament proteins and low-level resistance. Recent developments in understanding the role of efflux pumps (P-170, MRP) in multi-drug resistance are also reviewed. This book will be useful to clinicians and scientists working in the areas of chemotherapy, drug resistance, DNA repair and apoptosis research.
Multiple Representations in Chemical Education
Chemistry seeks to provide qualitative and quantitative explanations for the observed behaviour of elements and their compounds. Doing so involves making use of three types of representation: the macro (the empirical properties of substances); the sub-micro (the natures of the entities giving rise to those properties); and the symbolic (the number of entities involved in any changes that take place). Although understanding this triplet relationship is a key aspect of chemical education, there is considerable evidence that students find great difficulty in achieving mastery of the ideas involved. In bringing together the work of leading chemistry educators who are researching the triplet relationship at the secondary and university levels, the book discusses the learning involved, the problems that students encounter, and successful approaches to teaching. Based on the reported research, the editors argue for a coherent model for understanding the triplet relationship in chemical education.
Multiple Gravity Assist Interplanetary Trajectories
Reflecting the results of twenty years; experience in the field of multipurpose flights, this monograph includes the complex routes of the trajectories of a number of bodies (e.g., space vehicles, comets) in the solar system. A general methodological approach to the research of flight schemes and the choice of optimal performances is developed. Additionally, a number of interconnected methods and algorithms used at sequential stages of such development are introduced, which allow the selection of a rational multipurpose route for a space vehicle, the design of multipurpose orbits, the determination of optimal space vehicle design, and ballistic performances for carrying out the routes chosen. Other topics include the practical results obtained from using these methods, navigation problems, near-to-planet orbits, and an overview of proven and new flight schemes.

This volume is the first book-length study of the international phenomenon of multiple-language versions of new films from the early days of the sound era. Ufa Studios in Babelsberg, Germany, took the approach of shooting versions of each film in several different languages using German-speaking or multilingual actors“and they continued the practice throughout the 1930s, long after Hollywood studios had discarded it. Chris Wahl’s highly innovative study offers detailed analyses of individual films and well-grounded theoretical reflections on key questions of the original and the copy, of version and remake.
Multiple affiliations : autobiographical narratives of displacement by (im)migrant US women
Multiple Affiliations explores the autobiographical negotiations of memory and multilocality articulated by five (im)migrant women writing from, and being read (primarily) within, the US. Texts as diverse as Korean-American Theresa Hak Kyung Cha's Dictée (1982), Polish (Jewish)-American Eva Hoffman' Lost in Translation: Life in a New Language (1982), Chinese-American Maxine Hong Kingston's The Woman Warrior: Memoirs of a Girlhood among Ghosts (1976) and China Men (1980), Caribbean/African-American Audre Lorde's Zami: A New Spelling of My Name (1982), and Pakistani-American Sara Suleri's Meatless Days (1989) highlight how various (cross-race and transnational) experiences of location, dislocation, and relocation resonate with each other and "immigrant America." These texts widen and displace the generic boundaries of autobiography. Multiple Affiliations investigates the ways in which these autobiographies gesture beyond the individual self to the networks of relation that constitute that self. It elucidates the ways in which these (im)migrant text gesture beyond the US as setting and context for belonging, communion, and self-formation.
