Sensitive and heartwarming, Mr. Nicholas is a magical Christmas story in which lives and hearts are changed by a small boy and the power of his relentless love. Every town has its secrets. When it becomes known that Mr. Nicholas, the eccentric owner of the local hardware store, is somehow involved with reindeer, toys, and children, the town becomes more and more suspicious that this man is more than just a clerk on Main Street. JB, a clever, open ten-year-old boy with Down syndrome, is able to figure out the secret from the first time Mr. Nicholas gives him a chocolate deer wrapped in gold foil. JB's father and mother, both cynical and on the brink of divorce, follow the adventures of JB as he flies on the back of a reindeer, feeds Mister Rogers's fish, and defines what can be forgotten by those who are too busy to remember the magic of Christmas, cuckoo-clocks, and love. "In Christopher de Vinck's novel Mr. Nicholas, a hardened newspaperman's life is rocked by a small boy's love and an encounter with a mysterious old man.On his way to interview a beekeeper, Jim sees Anna's car clinging to the edge of the road. He stops to help, and they connect--as if each were tapped into the same current. But once married, their differences open a gap between them. Anna suggests that a baby could bridge that gap.But when JB is born with Down syndrome, Jim's rejection of his son leads Anna to file for separation. Jim feels disappointed in his career; he faces a sad and lonely Christmas. Gradually, though, the time he spends with his son opens his eyes to a world in which magic is real and everyone is worth loving.Anna cannot see the changes in Jim, and when JB goes missing, she blames him. She suspects that JB's friend, Mr. Nicholas, a scavenger and owner of a hardware store that hides a mystery, is responsible, too.Told in Jim's voice, this is a story about the power of a boy's relentless love. Tense and stressful at first, it makes the changes in Jim palpable through his inner reflections, his conversations with others, and through small actions that reveal his growing love for his son.Suspense grows as Mr. Nicholas comes under investigation for JB's disappearance. Jim questions the old man, who asks him some probing questions in return. In the book's satisfying conclusion, Jim realizes the importance and beauty of the ordinariness that makes life worth living and gives Christmas its true meaning. Sensitive and heartwarming, Mr. Nicholas is a magical Christmas story in which lives and hearts are changed by a small boy's unconditional love." --Foreword Reviews (September / October 2021)

Nicholas Jon Paul Martin William Annabelle Tydings is a curious young daredevil who walks to the beat of his own drum. His sensible side also yearns for respect. Why do people often tell him things that he knows cannot be true? Young Nicholas brushes off the hype in his matter-of-fact way, silently longing for the love and admiration of the people he holds dear. Will energetic curiosity and a daredevil attitude keep Nicholas from learning the truth about the world around him?

Many of the influences of the Christian faith have been obscured. Few recognize that the cultural icon of Santa Claus is one of the many, many influences of Christianity upon the Christmas season. "St. Nicholas-How a Christian Pastor Became Santa Claus" sketches the transformation of the legacy of a Christian pastor-Nicholas of Myra-into the fictitious Santa Claus. Though his life was historically celebrated on December 6, the caricature of Santa Claus has come to supplant the real purpose of Christmas-the birth of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. Following the historical transformation of Nicholas into Santa Claus, readers are invited to return to an appreciation of the true life of Nicholas and the Lord whom he served.

The Memoirs of Maurice Paleologue at the Russian Court of Nicholas II: Volume 1: July 20, 1914 to March 31, 1915
It was a great good fortune for all of us that Maurice Pal ologue was appointed as the French Ambassador to the court at St. Petersburg mere days before the outbreak of World War I, and therefore that he had a ringside seat to events as they swept across the continent, with inside information from both the Russian and the French governments. As the principal representative of Russia's greatest ally in Europe, M. Pal ologue had easy access to all the major political figures associated with the court of Nicholas II, including Nicholas himself, the Empress Alexandra, Grand Duke Nicholas, the Montenegrin sisters, Anna Vyroubova, Foreign Minister Sazonov, and, of course, Rasputin. Better yet, Maurice Pal ologue was a profoundly 'clubbable' man (probably in more ways than one - he had a reputation for being somewhat bumptious) with a sharp eye, a witty (again in more ways than one) turn of phrase, and an ever-receptive ear for gossip. He liked nothing better than to sit down companionably with the great and good for a cozy chat, and then to tell us all about what he had learned. His pen-sketches of the people he met, his assessments of the political and military situations facing Russia and its allies, and his search for the seat of the Russian soul, make this and the next two volumes utterly riveting for anyone with a human interest in the fate of Russia as it perched on the brink of the abyss.

St. Nicholas: The Believer: A New Story For Christmas Based On The Old Story Of St. Nicholas
From the Introduction, by Eric Elder: There was a time when I almost gave up celebrating Christmas. Our kids were still young and weren't yet hooked on the idea of Santa Claus and presents, Christmas trees and decorations. I had read that the Puritans who first came to America were so zealous in their faith that they didn't celebrate Christmas at all. Instead they charged fines to businesses in their community who failed to keep their shops open on Christmas day. They didn't want anything to do with a holiday that was, they felt, rooted in paganism. As a new believer and a new father myself, the idea of going against the flow of the excesses of Christmas had its appeal, at least in some respects. Then I read an article by a man who simply loved celebrating Christmas. He could think of no greater way to celebrate the birth of the most important figure in human history than throwing the grandest of parties for Him-gathering and feasting and sharing gifts with as many of his family and friends as possible. This man was a pastor of deep faith and great joy. For him, the joy of Christ's birth was so wondrous that he reveled in every aspect of Christmas, including all the planning, decorating and activities that went along with it. He even loved bringing Santa Claus into the festivities, our modern-day version of the very real and very ancient Saint Nicholas, a man of deep faith and great joy as well who Himself worshipped and adored the Baby who was born in Bethlehem. So why not celebrate the birth of Christ? Why not make it the biggest party of the year? Why not make it the "Hap-Happiest season of all"?I was sold. Christmas could stay-and my kids would be much hap-happier for it, too.I dove back into celebrating Christmas with full vigor, and at the same time took a closer look into the life of the real Saint Nicholas, a man who seemed almost irremovably intertwined with this Holy Day. I discovered that Saint Nicholas and Santa Claus were indeed one and the same, and that the Saint Nicholas who lived in the 3rd and 4th centuries after the birth of Christ was truly a devout follower of Christ himself. As my wife and I read more and more about Nicholas' fascinating story, we became enthralled with this believer who had already been capturing the hearts and imaginations of believers and nonbelievers alike throughout the centuries. With so many books and movies that go to great lengths to tell you the "true" story of Santa Claus (and how his reindeer are really powered by everything from egg nog to Coca-Cola), I've found that there are very few stories that even come close to describing the actual person of who Saint Nicholas was, and in particular, what he thought about the Man for whom Christmas is named, Jesus Christ. I was surprised to learn that with all the historical documents that attest to Saint Nicholas' faith in Christ, compelling tellings of those stories seem to have fallen by the wayside over the ages. So with the encouragement and help of my sweet wife, Lana, we decided to bring the story of Saint Nicholas back to life for you, with a desire to help you recapture the essence of Christmas for yourself. While some people, with good reason, may still go to great lengths to try to remove anything that might possibly hint of secularism from this holiest day of the year, it seems to me equally fitting to go to great lengths to try to restore Santa to his rightful place-not as the patron saint of shopping malls, but as a beacon of light that shines brightly on the One for whom this Holy Day is named. It is with deep faith and great joy that I offer you this Christmas novella-a little story. I've enjoyed telling it and I hope you'll enjoy hearing it. It just may be the most human telling of the story of Saint Nicholas you've ever heard. Above all, I pray that God will use this story to rekindle your love, not only for this season of the year, but for the One who makes this season so bright.Eric Elder
