In this tell-all memoir, a woman in her eighties, born during the Great Depression to Jewish immigrants, unveils her intimate self-transformations in the course of nine decades. Determined at an early age to prove herself a free spirit in a male dominated world, as a young adult Kahane went on the road, hitchhiking her way into and out of risky adventures and romantic affairs, ceaselessly chasing new experience. But what started out as a "road book" takes a different turn in midlife when, influenced by the insights of psychoanalysis and feminism, she became a feminist professor, mother and wife. In later life her story changed tracks again when a visit to Auschwitz compelled her to confront her own family history of loss and renewal. The memoir ends with a surprising new twist that opens to a hopeful future. In this long and hard-earned coming-of-age story, readers will find a piece of themselves.

Every year Lizzie and her family travel to their favorite spot, Beaver Brook Campground. In the year of this story telling, Lizzie is almost 12, entering middle school, and has been temporarily charged with babysitting her two-year-old brother. She becomes distracted by the allure of the campground, and her little brother wonders into the woods...resulting in a tragic series of events. All of this happens in the time frame of nine minutes. Nine Minutes and Counting brings the reader into Lizzie's journey. Lizzie enters middle school and has to navigate her classes, her friendships, and her unraveling home life, all while coping with her feelings of grief and guilt. The telling of this story intentionally weaves in several essential components that assist Lizzie in her path toward healing. The reader experiences this difficult and emotionally raw journey through the voice of Lizzie as she encounters a very special teacher and enters a grief group with other "middle school-ers" who have experienced loss. The very dramatic mistake Lizzie makes, by taking her eyes off from her little brother, will make this story relatable to all different readers. Middle grade students, young adults, parents, teachers, coaches, administrators, and school counselors could all walk away from reading this book with new insights and tools for coping with their own tragedy, or for helping someone else mired in guilt and grief. Although moments in this story are incredibly dark and gritty, the overall tone is one of hope. Lizzie models strength and resiliency and the reader will be able to be able to experience her march, stepping one foot in front of the other, from darkness into the light.
Niel Ballingall (1840-1916): The Third and Last Ballingall Factor of Balbirnie and Balgonie, Markinch Parish, Fife: By His Distant Third Cousin
Niel Ballingall was the eldest son of William Ballingall (1800-1888), Factor of the estates of Balbirnie and Balgonie in Markinch Parish, Fife. Niel would eventually follow in his father's footsteps becoming the third generation of the Ballingall family to retain the position of Factor to the Balfour family. Niel Ballingall would purchase residences in the parish more than his father and grandfather ever did, becoming a proprietor of a residence at Coaltown of Balgonie, Milton of Balgonie and residences on Betson and Commercial Streets in the village of Markinch. He developed a very strong interest in farming and the breeding of cattle but it was in the great development of coal mining on the Balgonie estate that he found the fullest scope for his abilities and energy. Niel would never marry, thus ending the line of succession of Ballingalls who would become future Factors of the estates of Balbirnie and Balgonie of the Balfour family. With Niel's death in 1916, his demise effectively ended the dominance of the family as Factors which spanned 142 years. Ballingall himself served in the position for 24 years before his retirement in October of 1912. This then is the narrative of the life and times of the last Ballingall Factor of Balbirnie and Balgonie.
Niel Ballingall (1804-1888): The Tenant Farmer of Seggie, Orwell Parish, Kinross: By His Distant Second Cousin
His nephew, the Reverend James Ballingall (1846-1926) described his uncle, Niel Ballingall as an "old bachelor with a stiff knee that obliged him to walk with a staff, and there was an air of comic dignity about him, as of a person of great importance and he loved nothing better than giving orders to anyone who was obliged to take them." He was the last son of Niel Ballingall (1750-1843) the Factor of Balbirnie and like his siblings grew up at Sweetbank in Markinch Parish. In the later years of his father's life, he was his clerk. When his sister, Elizabeth Pratt (1795-1863) inherited her late husband's lands at Seggie and Dochrie in Orwell Parish, Kinrossshire in 1842, she asked him to occupy these lands as a tenant farmer at Seggie which he did for over the next twenty years. He eventually retired from farming and resided in Leslie Parish, Fife and in his later years relocated back to Markinch. This then is the narrative of the life and times of Niel Ballingall, the tenant farmer of Seggie.

Rhona Stace

A collection in 3 parts (Season, Notes and Urban) of word pictures and small stories, each in the form of a Triptych of Haiku. An apparently unlikely combination, Rhona Stace is a veteran police officer from New Zealand who likes to write poetry. She is also a parent and active member of her local Anglican church, enjoying a sometimes possibly too intimate relationship with God. She keeps chickens, and lives rurally with two cats and a goat. Oh, and she also just happens to be transgender. May or may not be related to Wesley Stace (aka John Wesley Harding). Put all that together and you're going to get some pretty interesting poetry, given that she writes about pretty much anything and everything going on in her life. Nominated in the Hero category in the inaugural 2018 New Zealand LGBTI Awards, Rhona also has haiku in the 2018 edition of 100 Best Hooked on Haiku, a poem in the 2018 New Zealand Poetry Society Anthology. She has published two more collections of original poetry, entitled Two for Tea and now & then

Plans that can change everything Holli thinks she knows about herself, and the world around her.
Niel Ballingall (1750-1843): The First Ballingall Factor of Balbirnie, Markinch Parish, Fife: By His Distant First Cousin
He was named after the minister of Kennoway, Dr. Niel Bethune who was ordained only a few months before the child's birth. Niel Balligall was born of humble parents and after growing up in Kennoway Parish, Fife, the history of the family suggests that he may have been a clerk for a time in a lawyer's office in Cupar, and may have assisted Mr. A. Small, Factor at Balbirnie, before succeeding him as Factor in 1770, at the age of 20. Another account of his early years suggests that he was apprenticed to Mr. Jamieson, writer at Brymers Newton west of Kennoway where he had the benefit of his library, of which he made the most diligent use. He would continuously serve the Balfour family whose residence was Balbirnie House until 1969. Today the Balbirnie House is a hotel. Niel and his first wife, Betty McKenzie, are said to have given the name of the newly built Factor's House "Sweetbank," on the Balbirnie estate. Unfortunately, she would die within a year of their marriage, leaving no children. Ballingall, within two years of her death, would marry Isabella Russell, another old Fife farming family and have 13 children while at Sweetbank. In his early days of his Factorship at Balbirnie, he took a lease of the farm of Auchmuty on the Rothes estate. It was thought that Ballingall needed more money to support his growing family. On a large estate like Balbirnie, Ballingall had numerous responsibilities which included the management of the farm steadings; securing new tenants; roads and bridges on the estate to repair or build; improvements on the estate which included extensive tree planting and drainage of any bog land's and other miscellaneous duties as required. One such stone bridge that may have been constructed by the Factor is still presently standing which would have been wide enough for a cart is located on the southwest boundary of Star Moss. As Ballingall grew older he was happy to have his son, William (1800-1888), as his assistant and successor as Factor on the Balbirnie estate. Niel and his son were successively Factors at Balbirnie for considerably more than a century. This then is the narrative of the life and times of Niel Ballingall, the Factor of Balbirnie.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - A woman who longs to avoid risk at all cost learns that men who love danger are the most exciting in this moving novel from New York Times bestselling author Danielle Steel. After a carefree childhood, Mary Margaret Kelly came of age in the shadow of grief. Her father, a dashing daredevil Air Force pilot, died when she was nine. Maggie saw her mother struggle to put their lives back together. As the family moved from one city to the next, her mother warned her to beware of daredevil men and avoid risk at all cost. Following her mother's advice, and forgoing the magic of first love with a high school boyfriend who was too wild to feel safe, Maggie instead sought out all the things her mother had lost--a predictable partner, a stable home, and a regular paycheck. She chose to marry a dependable, kind man who was a reliable husband and successful accountant. Together they had a son and found happiness in a conventional suburban life. Until tragedy struck again. Now on her own, feeling a sense of adventure for the first time, Maggie decides to face her fears, setting off on a whirlwind trip from San Francisco to Rome, Paris, and Monaco. But when her travels reconnect her with the very same irresistible, thrill-seeking man she's spent thirty years trying to forget, Maggie becomes terrified that rushing into love and sharing his life may very well end in disaster. But ultimately, while Maggie tries to outrun her fears and painful memories of her past, fate will surprise her in the most astounding of ways, as she walks the tightrope between danger and courage, and between wisdom and love.
