Using research, analysis and a range of historical sources, Paul Weller and Popular Music immerses the reader in the excitement of Paul Weller’s unique creative journey, covering topics such as the artist’s position within his field; his creative processes; the contexts in which the music was made; the artist as collaborator; signifiers that mark the trajectory of the music; and formative influences. Focusing on over 40 years of recorded work from ‘In the City’ to ‘Fat Pop (Volume One)’, this study explores why Paul Weller's music is widely considered both timeless and of its time, and with reference to a wide range of interviews, reviews and texts, it offers an in-depth critical analysis of Paul Weller’s music. It will be of particular interest to scholars and researchers of popular music, popular culture, performance studies and music production.
This book investigates attitudes toward diversity as expressed in Paul’s letter to the Galatians and proposes a renewed understanding of the term s??? as used in this letter. S??? (sarx) is usually translated as "flesh" and has often been perceived in theological studies as a complicated and highly polysemous term. It is also a word whose interpretations have had far-reaching social, political, and religious consequences throughout history. The author argues in this volume that for Paul the term s??? is commonly adopted with reference to the collective group, and in light of a sense of collective identity in particular. A key assertion is that Paul was and remained a Jew and also continued to be deeply concerned with the prospects for the peaceful co-existence of Jews and Gentiles in the assemblies of God. The chapters draw on perspectives from classical rhetoric, modern linguistics, and social systems theory in order to describe the communicative structure of the letter, the construct of collective identity as described within this setting, and the potential for resilience in this construct. Florence Mabel Quiller-Couch (17 June 1865 - November 1924) was an English editor, compiler and children's writer. Mabel Quiller-Couch was born in Bodmin, Cornwall to physician Thomas Quiller-Couch and his wife, Mary (n e Ford). She was the second child and eldest daughter of five children. Her elder brother was the critic Arthur Quiller-Couch. After a disappointment in love, she lived with her younger sister Lilian Mary, also a writer, in Hampstead. Of her 26 publications, one was jointly written and one jointly edited with her sister. Quiller-Couch was the author of a number of novels and the compiler of an anthology of writings about the University of Oxford up to 1850.
