Pop Culture, Politics, and the News

Pop Culture, Politics, and the News

Joel Penney

In Pop Culture, Politics, and the News, Joel Penney explores how pop culture news has taken on an important role in contemporary political discourse. Through coverage of topics like Hollywood diversity, celebrity controversy, and "cancel culture" backlash, entertainment journalism has emerged as a key source of political information and commentary, providing audiences with an accessible lens into some of the most hot-button issues of our time. Yet due to the "clickbait" economics of the polarized digital news business, the quality of entertainment journalism is often compromised, and consequently, people view pop culture coverage as "soft news" with little substance or public value. Very little is known about how this journalism is produced and consumed as a component of the digital news ecosystem. Moreover, we lack a measured sense of its potential impact on the political interests and knowledge of its audiences, the politics of the entertainment industry it covers, and the shape of public debate more broadly. Drawing on interviews with entertainment journalists and testimonials from news audiences who share these stories on social media, Joel Penney argues for the importance of reframing our understanding of impactful journalism and persuasive political communication when culture and identity have moved thoroughly to the center of U.S. public discourse. Moreover, Penney examines how audiences engage with this highly accessible and emotionally resonant form of journalism and use it as a resource for political expression and discussion, raising important questions about how it can serve as a bridge to public issue engagement as well as a potential distraction from on-the-ground political concerns. As a cutting-edge, data-rich analysis of the blurring boundaries between entertainment, politics, social media activism, and partisan journalism, Pop Culture, Politics, and the News makes a major contribution to public scholarship on the shifting digital information landscape.

Mental Files in Perspective

Mental Files in Perspective

Intellectual development is primarily considered a domain specific enterprise. Children develop naïve physics, a folk psychology (theory of mind), a naïve biology, etc. But understanding perspective is a general, overarching phenomenon that cuts across such domains in development and in the brain. This has important theoretical consequences. For instance, our folk psychology cannot consist of a uniform "theory of mind" for explaining behaviour. Parts of the theory that are sensitive to perspective differences have to be separated from those that are not. A central concern is how perspective is represented in the mind. The answer comes from mental files theory. A mental file represents or refers to an object. It presents the object under a particular mode of presentation-perspective. Coreferential files refer to the same object and present the object under different perspectives. Files, thus, give us a concrete way to capture perspectives with the tools for basic object cognition. This book introduces mental files theory in relation to object files and discourse referents and then applies it to the development of perspective taking in early childhood and to brain imaging. The theory goes well beyond perspective; it is the theoretical tool for representing persisting objects, tracking them over time, and storing knowledge about them. From a leading figure in developmental psychology, this book addresses a topic much neglected in the cognitive sciences. The Context and Content series is a forum for outstanding original research at the intersection of philosophy, linguistics, and cognitive science. The general editor is François Recanati (Institut Jean-Nicod, Paris).

Rhetorics of choice have dominated the biosocial discourses surrounding BRCA risk for decades, telling women at genetic risk for breast and ovarian cancers that they are free to choose how (and whether) to deal with their risk. Critics argue that women at genetic risk are, in fact, not free to choose but rather are forced to make particular choices. In Being at Genetic Risk, Kelly Pender argues for a change in the conversation around genetic risk that focuses less on choice and more on care.Being at Genetic Risk offers a new set of conceptual starting points for understanding what is at stake with a BRCA diagnosis and what the focus on choice obstructs from view. Through a praxiographic reading of the medical practices associated with BRCA risk, Pender’s analysis shows that genetic risk is not just something BRCA+ women know, but also something that they do. It is through this doing that genetic cancer risk becomes a reality in their lives, one that we can explain but not one that we can explain away.Well researched and thoughtfully argued, Being at Genetic Risk will be welcomed by scholars of rhetoric and communication, particularly those who work in the rhetoric of science, technology, and medicine, as well as scholars in allied fields who study the social, ethical, and political implications of genetic medicine. Pender’s insight will also be of interest to organizations that advocate for those at genetic risk of breast and ovarian cancers.

In a hospital bed, small-time private detective Ray Lovell veers between paralysis and delirium. But before the accident that landed him there, he'd been hired to find Rose Janko, the estranged daughter of a traveling Gypsy family, who went missing seven years earlier.Half Romany himself, Ray is well aware that he's been chosen more for his blood than for his investigative skills. Still, he's surprised by the intense hostility he encounters from the Jankos, who haven't had an easy past. Touched by tragedy, they're either cursed or hiding a terrible secret--the discovery of which Ray can't help suspecting is connected to Rose's disappearance...Seamlessly toggling between Ray's past and present, and the perspective of the missing woman's young nephew JJ, Stef Penney builds a gripping page-turner that doesn't let go until its shocking end.

ASK ANY MAN. If you can get him to admit it, he'll probably tell you that he would like to be made love to almost as much as being a good lover. In the past, it is the man who has been responsible for not only the lovemaking, but the romance: candlelight, flowers, music, and tenderness. HOW TO MAKE LOVE TO A MAN, a classic best-seller, is the first book to focus on men's sexual and emotional needs, and to talk to today's woman who would like to be an active partner but doesn't quite know how. More than a manual for having sex (though it is that too), this is a guide to the art of making love. The author, after interviewing doctors, sex therapists, women, and most important, more than 200 men, has been able to understand men's deepest emotional needs. The author discusses what men find sexy in a woman; how to show a man that you are interested, how to get a man to share his emotional and sexual needs, how to enhance sex through a massage, touching, and improved timing, and much more.Whether married or single, the reader will gain new insight on making "whole" love--developing the attitude and the understanding that make the love act complete and meaningful. Rebuilding Trust in Healthcare: A Doctor's Prescription for a Post-Pandemic America centers on the patient-physician relationship as the fundamental building block of any proposal for healthcare reform. Paul Pender MD, a passionate advocate for patients and physicians, describes how trust develops between doctors and their patients and how that trust has been eroded by internal and external factors. The coronavirus pandemic has underscored a lack of trust in the healthcare system that was present long before the onset of COVID-19. Dr. Pender explains that the most critical element in regaining trust begins in the physician's office. The narrative with case presentations illustrate the myriad problems confronting our healthcare system in clear language for patients, healthcare providers and policy makers. Dr. Pender practiced clinical ophthalmology for 38 years, specializing in the medical and surgical treatment of eye diseases. He completed his residency at the world-renowned Wills Eye Hospital. Honors include a lecture series in his name by the New England Ophthalmological Society and the Secretariat Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology for his work on webinars for clinicians.Dr. Pender blogs regularly on timely medical issues on his website www.PaulPenderMD.com and popular social media platforms. He serves as an advisor to Vxtra Health, a company committed to collaborating with physicians to earn trust and manage healthcare costs.
