The Uses of Literature

The Uses of Literature

Perry Link

Why do people in socialist China read and write literary works? Earlier studies in Western Sinology have approached Chinese texts from the socialist era as portraits of society, as keys to the tug-of-war of dissent, or, more recently, as pursuit of "pure art." The Uses of Literature looks broadly and empirically at these and many other "uses" of literature from the points of view of authors, editors, political authorities, and several kinds of readers. Perry Link, author of Evening Chats in Beijing, considers texts ranging from elite "misty" poetry to underground hand-copied volumes (shouchauben) and shows in concrete detail how people who were involved with literature sought to teach, learn, enjoy, explore, debate, lead, control, and resist. Using the late 1970s and early 1980s as an entree to the workings of China's "socialist literary system," the author shows how that system held sway from 1950 until around 1990, when an encroaching market economy gradually but fundamentally changed it. In addition to providing a definitive overview of how the socialist Chinese literary system worked, Link offers comparisons to the similar system in the Soviet Union. In the final chapter, the book seeks to explain how the word "good" was used and understood when applied to literary works in such systems. Combining aspects of cultural and literary studies, The Uses of Literature will reward anyone interested in the literature of modern China or how creativity is affected by a "socialist literary system."

Walter Bagehot's Lombard Street, published in 1873 in the wake of a devastating London bank collapse, explained in clear and straightforward terms why central banks must serve as the lender of last resort to ensure liquidity in a faltering credit system. Bagehot's book set down the principles that helped define the role of modern central banks, particularly in times of crisis--but the recent global financial meltdown has posed unforeseen challenges. The New Lombard Street lays out the innovative principles needed to address the instability of today's markets and to rebuild our financial system. Revealing how we arrived at the current crisis, Perry Mehrling traces the evolution of ideas and institutions in the American banking system since the establishment of the Federal Reserve in 1913. He explains how the Fed took classic central banking wisdom from Britain and Europe and adapted it to America's unique and considerably more volatile financial conditions. Mehrling demonstrates how the Fed increasingly found itself serving as the dealer of last resort to ensure the liquidity of securities markets--most dramatically amid the recent financial crisis. Now, as fallout from the crisis forces the Fed to adapt in unprecedented ways, new principles are needed to guide it. In The New Lombard Street, Mehrling persuasively argues for a return to the classic central bankers' "money view," which looks to the money market to assess risk and restore faith in our financial system.

He said, 'When you have them all, put them together and the puzzles are complete. They make up the Maps of Ages that lead to a treasure of ultimate success: gold and riches if you like, or island retreats in faraway places-or perhaps the ultimate for you is peace of mind. You will have to find the Rules, reach the Mountain, and pass Gate One to fulfill your quest to reach Elgobon.'"Then I started on my perilous, distant journey through landscapes never seen and years of time ...." The ultimate goal of this text is to convey to my Christian brothers and sisters the information that our Christian ancestors would have considered to be our birthright. In the words of the ancient Christians: "When you know yourselves then you will be known and you will understand that you are children of the living Father, but if you do not know yourselves then you live in poverty and you are poverty." From The Gospel of Thomas The topics addressed in this text include: 1) How Black people developed the Crucified Savior concept; 2) How and why the Romans attacked our Black Christian ancestors; 3) Why were the Christians and Hebrews forced to hide their texts and what did those hidden books/texts reveal (for example The Dead Sea Scrolls, The Nag Hammadi Papers, and The Gospel of Mary); 4) Who were the Black priests/priestesses (ex. Arius and Hypatia) who challenged the Romans and who were those that allied themselves with the Romans; 5) How has history impacted our current practice of Christianity; and much more. Perry Khepera Kyles Ph.D is a specialist on African Diaspora History and Culture. Through his tours, publications, and lectures he has been able to introduce many people to the story of our most influential ancestors. His contributions include a book entitled Kemet 101: An Introduction to Ancient Egyptian History and Culture, a DVD lecture series called The African Diaspora Lecture Series, and an annual tour to Egypt called The Egypt Sacred Lands Tour. Near the end of World War II, a National Socialist resistance movement, the Werewolves, briefly flickered to life in Germany and its borderlands. In this volume the author surveys a broad range of material in an effort to recount the story of the movement. Dedicated to delaying the advance of the victorious Allies and Soviets, the Werewolves succeeded in scattered acts of sabotage and violence, and they encouraged the evolution of combat into a savage, semi-guerilla phase of fighting, which was especially characteristic of the last weeks of the war. Contrary to established thought, the new evidence reveals that Hitler's Werewolves were active against both the Allies and the Soviets, and were also involved in internecine struggles against German "collaborators" and "defeatists". However, popular support for the Werewolves was limited, and the Nazi leadership made a bad problem worse by failing to co-ordinate the different agencies involved in the programme, which yielded a weaker guerilla movement than might otherwise have emerged.

The Libidinal Economy of China

The Libidinal Economy of China

Perry Johansson Vig

This study of postsocialist China explores the development of a Chinese consumer culture in the 1990s with a special focus on advertising and shifting ideals on female beauty. On an analytical level it is an investigation into Chinese nationalism that demonstrates how the desire for recognition as a powerful nation is linked to anxieties about Chinese femininity. The book is also, on a theoretical level, about the libidinal economy of an imaginary “China.” In other words it attempts to unravel the sexuality of geopolitics by describing the association between femininity and China in popular culture and nationalist discourse. In addition to advertisements, political writings, plays, and films, the archive for this inquiry consists of fieldwork observations and interviews. The Libidinal Economy of China engages a range of post-colonial and psychoanalytically informed thinkers in a truly cross disciplinary study. Lacanian theories on hysteria, femininity, and narcissism are applied in the international domain of geopolitics to formulate a general theory on China’s relationship to the West. David Eng and Homi Bhabha are employed for discussing racial fetishism in contemporary China, while Slavoj Žižek’s ideas on violence and the Other are engaged in explaining the emotional dimension of national identification. The study concludes that China and the New Chinese Nationalism is firmly under the gaze of a Western Other analogous to a male gaze. That Other rules the libidinal economy of consumer culture, which explains China’s recurring history of wanting to emulate and catch up with the West while simultaneously reacting to such an attained intimacy with castration anxiety and aggressive hysteria.
