Philip Grözinger’s art derives from his investigations of future-oriented visions. With his individualistic painterly signature he invites the viewer to join him on a surreal journey through the pictorial traditions of the Pop culture of recent decades. This volume is a retrospective which provides a comprehensive overview of his outstanding oeuvre. If there were such a thing, Grözinger’s works could be classified as Virtual Surrealism. Figures in space suits, black manikins and other figures encounter one another in a fictional cosmos. Against a background of abstract worlds they tell stories which follow their own physical laws. In painterly manner, Grözinger combines lurid contrasts with delicate, pastel-like shades. His paint application is based on that of miniature painting and gives the cartoon-like creatures human features as it draws the viewer into the artist’s fantasy world.
Philip Freneau Tomo Cheeki, the Creek Indian in Philadelphia
Philip Freneau (1752-1832) was one of the first Americans to gain wide recognition as a writer. He is generally remembered as the father of American poetry, but his prose writings have not always received the attention they deserve. As the editor of three important papers in the late 18th century (The National Gazette. The Jersey Chronicle, and The Time-Piece and Literary Companion) and as a contributor to many others, Freneau produced a large number of political and literary essays. The Tomo Cheeki Essays, which were published in 1795 and in 1797, constitute an excellent example of Freneau's prose work. These pseudo-autobiographical accounts of an Indian visiting a city of the Whites are based upon the model of the European oriental tale, while simultaneously incorporating American subject matter. The essays are representative of a decisive period of American literary history, since they reveal both Freneau's indebtedness to European culture and his role in the process of overcoming this indebtedness in the beginning creation of an independent national literature. The present edition provides the first complete and separate modern collection of the essays, which gives the reader an opportunity to get acquainted with an important example of early American prose writing that has been virtually inaccessible up to now.

The luminous and compelling photographs in New York in the 1970s capture the essence of a city in a way best described as "place portraiture." Trager's images present the architecture of Manhattan with time-defiant clarity and beauty. Although Trager selected his subjects for aesthetic and visual reasons-rather than from an historical or documentary point of view-with the passage of time his distinctly imaginative photographs have also acquired value as historical documents. The negatives for the images in this book, only recently rediscovered, had originally been archived for printing but Trager began other projects before any prints were made. The photographs in New York in the 1970s were taken at the same time as Trager's timeless Philip Trager: New York, published by Wesleyan University Press in 1980, in which the photographer depicts the city "as a solitary figure, always aware of the 'enveloping sky.'" New York in the 1970s reveals Trager's more concentrated attention to the interaction between the city's architecture and the dynamics of the street.

When Philip Guston turned to the medium of lithography in the early sixties, he was regarded as one of the leading figures of Abstract Expressionism in the United States. At that time, his art was already showing signs of the change that would lead to the later representational works that dominated the last decade of his career. The impressive series of black-and-white lithographs that Guston made shortly before his death in 1980 incorporates, as a sort of visual autobiography, the complete repertoire of objects that marked his return to powerful pictorial representation: simple everyday items, clocks, shoes, books, cigarettes, ashtrays, and occasionally his beloved sandwiches and cherries. Philip Guston always had eminent artist friends. Tireless in his quest for the unknown, the still undiscovered, Guston engaged poets and literati in intense dialogues that, starting in the sixties, led to fruitful collaborations - including the creation of numerous illustrations and cover images for works by poets such as William Corbett, Bill Berkson, and Clark Coolidge. In his "poempictures," Guston ultimately turned to producing interactions of text and drawings - as responses to poems by his writer friends or as independent works that incorporated selected lines of poetry.

Philip Loersch (b.
