When Officer Andy Myers met Loraine Phillips, he had no interest in her son. And he certainly never dreamed he'd respond to a call, finding that same boy in a pool of blood. Even more alarming was the father standing watch over his son's body. Myers had never seen a man respond to death-particularly the death of a child-in such a way. When the father is charged with murder and sentenced to death, he chooses not to fight but embrace it as God's will. Myers becomes consumed with curiosity for these strange beliefs. What follows is the story of the bond these two men share as they come to terms with the tragedy and the difficult choices each one must make.

This first general history of pre-goldrush Victoria in more than ninety years incorporates the advances in documentation and scholarship which have taken place. The book is illustrated in colour with contemporary paintings, many of which will be unfamiliar to most readers. The period from the first temporary convict camp of 1803 to the formal separation of Victoria from New South Wales in 1851 encompassed years of struggle, adversity and uncertainty. They saw the future of the territory shaped by diverse figures: Aborigines, whalers, adventurers, squatters, speculators and immigrants. The story begins with the British government's decision to make a settlement on the shores of Bass Strait and with a study of the Aboriginal inhabitants of Port Phillip as they were at the dawn of the nineteenth century. An account of the beginnings of Melbourne leads on to the topics of squatting, speculation, immigration, economic depression and recovery, and ends with an examination of the separation of the district from New South Wales.

In 1972, the Philadelphia Phillies experienced one of their worst seasons in franchise history, finishing with an abysmal 59-97 record. Yet throughout this disastrous season, Steve "Lefty" Carlton proved to be a diamond in the rough. In his first year with the club, he led the league with 27 wins, eight shutouts, and a sizzling 1.98 ERA, earning an astounding 45.8 percent of Philadelphia's wins. He also won his first Cy Young award, the first pitcher to do so with a last-place team. This work chronicles Carlton's magical season, including the Rick Wise-for-Carlton trade, his 5-1 start following the players' first-ever strike, his 15-game winning streak, and a number of memorable games along the way. Interviews with Phillies icons, Hall of Famers, and legendary sports writers add insights to this account of Carlton's remarkable achievements amidst one of the most calamitous periods in Phillies history.
From Rough Towels to Milkshakes: Phillip's Story
This is the story of life so far with my son and the effect his disability has had on the wider family. When Phillip was born doctors initially denied that he had any problems. I felt, rather than knew, something was not quite right. Although I was reprimanded for voicing my concerns, these feelings never quite went away. Once Phillip started school it was obvious he could not keep up with his peers. My anxieties proved to be correct when he was eventually diagnosed with a learning disability at the age of four and then much later, in his thirties, Asperger's Syndrome. This book is a record of just some of our journey. I decided to write down our experiences after hearing the words "slipped through the net" concerning someone else, another case of failure to provide adequate care by Social Services. These were the same words said to us many years ago. Another phrase frequently used, but heard too often for it to ring true is "we have learnt lessons." I have to say, general understanding of autism is far more widespread now, although there are still many injustices and in the worst cases poor care, bullying and intimidation.
