How the Worlds Became

How the Worlds Became

Our ancestors told many a story about the world, addressing in imaginative terms questions we now consider philosophical or scientific. Among the oldest stories are those telling how the First Thing emerged from Nothing and gradually became "the ten thousand things," including powers of a larger and longer-lasting sort than those of mortals, sometimes represented in the motion of heavenly bodies. Such imaginative tellings or myths in some ways resemble modern cosmological theories, but in their original sense were transformative resources for humane living, providing ways of enlivening our spirits. "The lover of myth," as Aristotle said, "is in a way a lover of wisdom, for the myth is composed of wonders." Let us then approach the stories included here as just such lovers of wisdom, keeping a keen but sympathetic eye out for their wonders, intent on unveiling new insights into our beginnings, and that of all the creatures with whom we share the world.

Dr. David Stevens' new book, Falling Back in Love is ideal for any couple-whether married, engaged, or dating for any considerable time. Unlike other authors who may write about relationships, Stevens has lived and breathed this subject-helping couples for 40+ years but more importantly, has been in a loving and caring relationship for over 50. Stevens' book is not only filled with sound advice, but with examples of what it means to be in a committed relationship. As the good doctor would say. . . "Forget about trying to have a perfect marriage and strive to be perfectly married. "What does this mean? After you read, Falling Back in Love you'll understand, but more importantly, you'll be able to incorporate more love into your relationships. Sheilah Brooks, Writer I felt that with the divorce rate being at 50%, this book could save couples tons of money if they want to salvage a relationship. We live in such callous times when love and commitment seem almost nonexistent." Martha Tucker

This short introduction aims to provide archaeologists of all backgrounds with a grounding in the principles, materials, and methods of geology. Sections include coverage of main rock-forming minerals and classes of rocks. Geological maps and structures are introduced, and the elements of geological stratigraphy and dating are explained and related to archaeological experience. Fluvial and coastal environments are important archaeological landscapes and their formation processes, sediments and topography are outlined. Stone for building, implement-making, tool-making, and making mortar are all discussed, followed by an introduction to clays and ceramics. A final chapter introduces metallurgical landscapes: metalliferous ores, mining and smelting, and metal-making industries. Each chapter ends with a short reading list, and many have selected case-histories in illustration of the points made. Included is a glossary of technical terms.

FALLING BACK IN LOVE AGAIN must be based on trust. It is the key component to bringing relationship, and joy back into a struggling marriage or courtship. It lays out marital bliss accompanied by honest observation of both partners' needs and nuances; pointing out how each can find agreement. Dr. Stevens does not sugarcoat the issues he believes can save a marriage. Instead, he encourages couples to take the option of compromise. FALLING BACK IN LOVE AGAIN instructs the couple to recall those precious memories of how love began, mentally recapturing the bliss and pleasures of the past. He often shares Bible passages that fit and clarify the way of FALLING BACK IN LOVE AGAIN. He instructs that the best way to keep love alive is to feed it Anything allowed to starve will die. Think of fire in an outdoor grill. As long as you keep adding charcoal briquettes, it will probably keep on cooking. If the fire is allowed to go completely out, then the only remedy is to start over. If your love has gone cold, do not delay - read these solid, easy and helpful strategies, and don't waste another moment wondering if it's the right thing to do. Regain your partner for years to come.

Peter's Halakhic Nightmare

Peter's Halakhic Nightmare

John R.L. Moxon

Mohr Siebeck
2017
nidottu
Did Luke intend Peter's visionary command to eat 'unclean animals' in Acts 10 to suggest the dissolution of the Jewish Law? Whilst scholars have argued over sources, inconsistent redaction and later reception, many have failed to notice here the novel use of a type of transgression anxiety dream. John Moxon shows how by the incorporation of such naturalistic motifs, Luke takes "revelation" in a new and decidedly psychological direction, probably imitating similar developments in Graeco-Roman biography. If the vision reveals an illegitimate transfer of disgust within an exaggerated halakha of separation, then its target is prejudice and inconsistency, not the Jew-Gentile divide as such, as underlined by the ironic contrast with the pious Cornelius. In this reading, Luke's non-supercessionism is maintained, whilst showing him acutely aware of the kinds of nightmare holding many back from the nascent Gentile mission.
Mapping the Archaeological Continuum

Mapping the Archaeological Continuum

This book addresses the true 'landscape' perspective approach that archaeologists in Italy, and in many parts of the Mediterranean, use to study the archaeology of landscapes, marking a departure from the traditional site-based approach. The aim of the book is to promote the broader application of new paradigms for landscape analysis, combining traditional approaches with multidisciplinary studies as well as comparatively new techniques such as large-scale geophysical surveying, airborne laser scanning and geo-environmental studies. This approach has yielded tangible and striking results in central Italy, clearly demonstrating that identifying the 'archaeological continuum' is a realistic aim, even under the specific environmental and archaeological conditions of the Mediterranean world.
