Biological rhythmicity has been a subject of scientific research for a relatively short time. In the special case of daily, or circadian rhythms, it is only during the past twenty years that rapidly increasing efforts have been undertaken in evaluat­ ing properties and mechanisms. As a consequence of these efforts, the study of biological and, in particular, circadian rhythmicity is no longer a somewhat dubious occupation but rather a serious branch of science which combines the interdisciplinary efforts of numerous researchers around the world. The general result of these efforts is that many features of circadian rhythms of many different species of living beings are well known today. In addition to studies with lower organisms, the evaluation of human circadian rhythms was originally more or less a compulsory exercise done in order to extend the "catalogue of species"; of course, the work was of unusual impor­ tance due to the special position of man in biology. In the course of the very first experimental series, it became clear that humans possess an "internal clock" as had been established in various organisms, protists, plants, and animals, and that human circadian rhythms fit the general regularities of biological rhythms known at that time. However, it soon became apparent that circadian rhythmicity of man shows, additionally, particularities of great general interest, for practical and theoretical reasons.

In recent years, a new field of nuclear research has been opened through the possibility of studying nuclei wi\h very large values of angular momentum, temperature, pressure and number of particles. This development has been closely associated with heavy ion reactions, since collisions between two heavy nuclei are especially effective in producing metastable compound systems with large angular momentum, and in transferring energy which is distributed over the whole nuclear volume. Under the strain of temperature and of the Coriolis and centrifugal forces, the nucleus displays structural changes which can be interpreted in terms of pairing and shape phase transit­ ions. This was the subject of the lectures of J. D. Garrett, P. J. Twin and S. Levit. While the rotational motion is, at zero temperature un­ damped, the width of giant resonances indicate that the nucleus only oscillates through few periods before the motion is damp­ ed by particle decay, and through coupling to the compound nucleus. Temperature and angular momentum influence in an im­ portant way the properties of both giant resonances and rotatio­ nal motion. These subjects were developed by K. Snover, and by P. F. Bortignon and R. A. Broglia, as well as by A. Bracco, A. Dellafiore and F. Matera.

The field of reactive intermediates has been blossoming at a rapid rate in recent years and its impact on chemistry, both "pure" and "applied," as well as on biology, astronomy, and other areas of science, is enormous. Several books have been published which cover the area; one, edited by McManus, * surveys the subject in general at the senior undergraduate or beginning graduate level. In addition, a number of monographs have appeared which deal with individual topics such as carbenes, nitrenes, free radicals, carbanions, carbenium ions, and so on, in great depth. Our objective is somewhat different. We hope that these Advances in . . . type of volumes will appear at irregular intervals of a year to 18 months each. We intend to publish up-to-date reviews in relatively new areas of the chemistry of reactive intermediates. These will be written by world authorities in the field, each one of whom will give the reader a current in-depth review of all aspects of the chemistry of each of these species. It is our plan that the subjects to be reviewed will cover not only organic chemistry but also inorganic, physical, bio-, industrial, and atmospheric chemistry. The volumes themselves, we hope, will end up being reasonably interdisciplinary, though this need not and probably will not be the case for the individual reviews.

Editing a book of this nature was a simultaneously exhilarating and frightening experience. It was exhilarating to draw from cell biologists, biochemists, and molecular biologists, as well as those dermatologists, pathologists, and pul­ monologists who are cell biologists at heart, to author chapters. At the same time, it was frightening to ask such busy investigators to devote their precious time to writing chapters that summarize not just their own endeavors but their entire area of expertise. However, the authors assuaged our fears by enthusi­ astically accepting the proposal to write on specific topics despite the time burden, and to update and willingly accept our editorial comments. In the editors' view, the authors have captured the important scientific data in their respective fields, have organized the data into an understandable outline, and have applied the information to elucidating wound repair processes. The explosion of new, important discoveries in the field of wound repair and related areas as our book was developing has been very unsettling. This observation predicts obsolescence. In response to this possibility, the authors and the editors have attempted to build fundamental concepts upon existing data. Hopefully, these concepts will help provoke further experimentation to unravel the complex, interwoven processes of wound repair. The book has been organized into three parts: Inflammation, Granulation Tissue Formation, and Extracellular Matrix Production and Remodeling.

1. 0 INTRODUCTION. In this chapter we define first in Section I. I the concept of failure used in this study. Thereafter, we discuss briefly the causes and possible consequ­ ences of failure. Finally, we explain in Section 1. 2 the aim of this study. 1. 1 THE CONCEPT OF FAILURE. In this monograph we investigate the predictability of corporate failure. By 'failure' we understand the inability of a firm to pay its obligations when these fall due (i. e. technical cash insolvency). (Walter 1957 and Donaldson 1962 and 1969). Failure mostly appears in a critical situation as a consequ­ ence of a sharp decline in sales. Such a decline can be caused by a recession, the loss of an important customer, shortage of a raw material, deficiencies of management, etc. The ability to predict corporate failure is important for all parties involved in the corporation, in particular for management and investors. An early warning signal of probable failure will enable them to take preventive measures: changes in operating policy or reorganization of financial structure, but also voluntary liquidation will usually shorten the period over which losses are incurred. The possibility to predict failure is important also from a social point of view, because such an event is an indication of misallocation of resources; prediction provides opportunities to take corrective measures. to the Fundamental and Applied Catalysis Series Catalysis is important academically and industrially. It plays an essential role in the manufacture of a wide range of products, from gasoline and plastics to fertilizers and herbicides, which would otherwise be unobtainable or prohibitively expensive. There are few chemical-or oil-based material items in modem society that do not depend in some way on a catalytic stage in their manufacture. Apart from manu­ facturing processes, catalysis is finding other important and ever-increasing uses; for example, successful applications of catalysis in the control of pollution and its use in environmental control are certain to increase in the future. The commercial importance of catalysis and the diverse intellectual challenges of catalytic phenomena have stimulated study by a broad spectrum of scientists, including chemists, physicists, chemical engineers, and material scientists. Increas­ ing research activity over the years has brought deeper levels of understanding, and these have been associated with a continually growing amount of published material.
