Critical Criminology

Critical Criminology

Rene Van Swaaningen

SAGE Publications Inc
1997
sidottu
Criminology is under attack for its seeming shift away from theoretical debates towards empirical, administrative-led research. In this timely book, Ren[ac]e van Swaaningen warns that if criminology is to keep advancing as a discipline there is an urgent need for the resurgence of a theoretical perspective. He believes that by examining critical criminology within a European framework, a new critical perspective in the search for alternative visions of justice will emerge. Through a comprehensive historical and contemporary analysis of critical criminology throughout Europe, the author argues that critical criminological theories must be reassessed and reapplied in the light of current trends within criminology and criminal justice. By placing central themes from the current politics of law and order - such as crime prevention, safety and the position of the victim - in a framework of social justice, the book concludes that critical criminological theories illuminate our understanding both of crime and the institutions constructed to attempt its control.

Japanese War Art and Uniforms 1853-1930

Japanese War Art and Uniforms 1853-1930

Rene Chartrand

Schiffer Publishing Ltd

This beautifully illustrated book reviews the extraordinary evolution of Japan’s military institutions at a period of enormous transformation. Conversely, as this book shows with many fine color plates, Japanese art deeply influenced emergent impressionist Western artists. The uniforms, equipment and ships are shown with much realism while keeping the tradition of great art. For the first time in art history as well as military history, this book documents what the prints show thanks to extremely rare early military regulations and related documents whose illustrations are also exquisite if totally unknown.
The Arabian Seas: The Indian Ocean World of the Seventeenth Century
The Arabian Seas is a magisterial work on the world political economy (trade, war, power) that explores the intersect of the worlds of Islam (including South and Southeast Asia, the Middle East and East Africa) and the European world-economy (particularly the seafaring Portuguese, Dutch, and British) on the eve of the modern world system. It is likely to become a classic in its field and one of the pillars of the emerging literature in recent years that has begun to recast our understanding of the "early modern history" of Asia and the world economy, underlining the early and long predominance of Asia in the world economy and showing the long and deep ties between European and Asian economic and military interactions. This work centrally addresses current debates on the nature of the early modern world system and the relative strengths of East and West. There are no competitors for this book, but it may be compared with Braudel's masterful studies of the Mediterranean in the sense that it does for the Arabian Seas (Indian Ocean World) spanning South Asia, the Middle East, and the East African Coast and beyond what Braudel did for the Mediterranean.
